Can 9x18mmMakarov Guns Fill the Void Between .380 & 9mm?

I agree, NB. And I would also suggest that a P64 makes an excellent pocket gun. (And it's not plastic!)
I agree, except the P-64 has an uncomfortable large grip, especially for a PPK type gun, and the trigger guard has sharp edges. With the Wolff springs, the double action is tolerable. The flatness and thinness make it a good CCW.

Remington R-51 (Possibly Ahead of "The Void")

I dislike doing back-to-back entries, but.........here go we go.

I realize many believe 9mm is the basic minimum for CCW. Many factors have to be considered.

Most of us know of the Remington Model 51, that is a prized collectable, made several years ago in .32 ACP and .380 ACP.

The latest "Guns & Ammo Magazine" had an article on Remington's new R-51 in 9mm. I haven't read it in depth yet, but this is touted as one of the latest candidates for CCW, at a reasonable price.

I plan to read this article more in depth, and follow reviews of it.:)

I'd suggest it is not nearly as good of one as say the Kahr CM9. The P64 has an outrageously bad double action trigger (it can be improved though), its blow back action gives it more felt recoil, weighs about 6 oz more, it has inferior sights, and is a bigger gun (its actually probably closer to the CW9 but I'd have to check the dimensions). Honestly the P64 is bigger and heavier than what I consider a true pocket gun. Like I say its really more the size of the CW/P9, Walther PPS, etc (but thanks to that metal frame it is still heavier). I think it would be really hard to argue the P64 is a better carry gun than a PPS.

Most 9mm Mak guns are well made, being military designs--but designed for belt wear more than CCW. There have been FEW 'new' 9mm Mak designs in the past 40 odd years that have made it to the US market.

Modern ammunition makes them an economically viable alternative to a 380 or short barreled 9mm.

I agree. It is a long distance from the back of the backstrap to the trigger, and I thought I had average sized hands. I like the P-64 for other reasons, but it "appears" to be a good "pocket gun", at first.:)

I see the Remington R51 online for sale at under $400, but "not in stock".:)

I handled and R51 today at the Outdoor Show in Harrisburg, PA. I was VERY impressed with the entire package. Fit, and finish, size, weight, and trigger pull, and reset. I spoke with one of the Remington reps, and she said it would be available at the end of February.

Many criticize the weight of the CZ82. I actually like the extra weight. It helps me keep on target for follow up shots.
The 82 is my daily carry.

9x18 vs .380

Wow ! With all the posts, looks like the Remington R51 (9x19mm) just might knock all the .380's and the 9x18mm's out of the water.

I can hardly wait to try one.:)

I'm looking forward to the R51 too! All I've ever carried are .380s (PPK/s), .32s (PPK) and my Makarov. I do love my Makarov, amazing gun, utterly reliable, accurate and I think it's plenty powerful for CCW.

If the R51 is all it's made out to be I'll start carrying the 9mm right away. For me carry is all about comfort and ease to conceal. The three mentioned above have given me that.

I'm getting an R51 as soon as they come out. My LGS has me on the list to call as soon as they come in.

Most 9x18 guns are excellent carry guns, and are much better choices than some of the "cutting edge"compact/lightweight 9x19 guns with questionable quality and reliabilty. I have no issue carrying my 1987 Bulgarian surplus Mak with Hornaday's excellent XTP loading- compact, reasonably powerful, unquestioned reliabilty. Even though I am a lefty, the Mak just feels right in the hand.

I like all of the 9x18 sidearms, with the possible exception of the PA63.....never could warm up to it.
A PM, P64 or a CZ82- suitably re- sprung with Wolff Gunsprings- works just fine with everything between cheap ball and hot Buffalo Bore Hard Cast Flat Points...
None are the newest, the smallest, most powerful etc....but for their intended role( and the fun factor!)they just plain work.

I agree with you totally!:)

With the ammo being put out today for the 380 in the guns that will handle it there's no reason to think that there's something that needs to be between the 380 and 9 millimeter in a compact pistol. I wouldn't shoot the ammo I am speaking of in a mouse gun, but a metal frame with a 3.5" barrel I like my chances with the .380.
I shot some zombie max today at ten feet, and it would break 900 fps. I shot some +p 90 grain ammo today that averaged 1195 fps in . 380.
