I was wondering how those of you handle a trip to a public restroom.

Obviously # 1 isn't a problem but what do you do with your CCW when you go for a #2 when there are no shelves and the partitions between the stalls are a foot off the ground?

I haven't got my CC permit yet and I was trying to figure this out in advance. Seems to me it wouldn't be too wise to let it hang from your belt, especially when someone is in the stall next to your carry side.

So, how do you handle this situation?

Hmm ... how to answer and still remain High Road ... :uhoh: :D

This is what I do. Unfasten your pants just enough to let them slide down to just above your knees, loosely refasten your belt, leave the gun in the holster, and spread the knees slightly to apply pressure so the gun stays put. Here is where a holster with a degree of retention comes into its own. :) This is preferable to setting the gun off to the side, e.g., on a paper dispenser or the top of the toilet tank. It may fall off and hit the floor, or you might even forget it.

This is an indisputable advantage of a shoulder holster. ;)

pick a stall against the wall? that way your carry side is against a wall and nobody is the wiser.

use a smartcarry, when you drop your drawers it will be hidden in your pants.

or you could risk a plaxico and remove it from the holster and set it in your pants while you do your stuff

I like the shoulder holster idea but I'm mainly thinking of when it's warm outside. When it's cold I'll probably put it in my coat pocket when I hang it on the hook inside the door (provided there's one on the door).

I like the wall idea. I generally like the wall stall anyway provided it's available.
I don't know if the belt around the knees would work well for me but I will give it a try when the situation comes up.

I'll check into the smart carry, thanks for the info!

I live in Lima. That's almost dead center between Dayton and Toledo on I-75. Where are you going to school?

Ha, lots of Ohioans up in here! I live in Cincinnati!

The best part of this is we are all willing to even change the way we poop, just to carry a gun. Now that's supporting the number 2, er I mean 2nd Amendment!

I loosen belt, unbutton, unzip, remove my weapon, drop drawers, take seat, lay weapon in crotch of underwear. Reverse when done, you cannot forget your piece this way. Too much info?

Easy, don't use public restrooms. At all costs :p .

I've never had to find out, but I'd either do what post #2 says. I suppose if you have a DA weapon with a long, heavy pull you could hang it over the coat hanger on the door from the trigger guard, assuming it is pretty sturdy. I dunno if I'd like doing that, though.

hang it over the coat hanger on the door from the trigger guard

I remember an incident where a LEO put one through the ceiling of a rest room somewhere when he did just that.

(I know the post included a heavy double-action pull as a qualifier, but this is probably not a good idea, no matter what kind of trigger/safety you have.)

I don't have a ready answer. I have clamped the pistol under my armpit, then reholster when all is fastened up normally. This takes some practice (which I did over a carpeted floor with an unloaded gun) as it is very easy to slack pressure and drop it.

And there's one place you don't want it to fall... :)

I'm with the putting it in either your underwear or in the crotch of you pants if you don't have a holster it'll stay in. Given the option I prefer leaving it in the holster.

The FBI actually has a training block on this. I wish they would share their curriculum for it.

I have to admit, I never though of this before. Great question, good answers. I aswell never use a public restroom for #2.

I try at all costs to avoid public rest rooms for this very reason. Barring that, it goes in the crotch of my undies. I know it's unseen there, relatively secure, and I most definitely won't forget it. No skid marks.

I also

avoid #2 in public restrooms at all costs (well, almost all costs):uhoh:, unless it is a new building, hospital, or some other clean place.

You can't be too careful!

The best place is HOME (second best is in the woods).

You could try pocket carry if your gun is small enough. This is a similar dillema to what I go through when I try on clothes at the mall.

I have used the coat hook with my S&W M21 and my 1911.
I have also used the TP dispenser... and the fold down baby seat.
I know many people are uncomfortable with taking it off their person, so the place it in your underwear option also works.
But the bathroom issue is one reason why I LOVE shoulder holsters.

This ain't really that hard boys.

First there is a lot to be said for rigs that be easily removed from the belt. They make it easier in just these situations.

A couple of suggestions have been made that are useful. Some not so much. So try this...Stick the rig or the gun down your left pant leg while you squat. It ain't gonna move from there till you stand up. Stick the piece into the top of your sock if you need to. If you wear shorts in the warm months follow the other suggestions and practice at home to figure out what works best for you.

Now women have an advantage here. They often carry bags. In cities with good public transport men very often carry bags, of one type or another, as well. A bag is a very handy thing. Think of the stuff you normally stick int he pockets of your coat in the cold months and that in the warm months you have no place to carry that stuff. A bag helps. You can stick a book or magazine in them, cell phone, etc. and a gun when you go to the rest room.

If you are concerned that you'll "look gay" carrying a bag well that's damm silly and there are "manly" looking bags out there anyways. So if where to put your gun is a stumper. Get a bag.

For the guys that said they put the gun in the crotch of their pants, are your pant lying on the floor of the public restroom? Yuck.

I pull down my pants as I unholster my gun and place the gun in the crotch of my pants. And no...I don't pull them down far enough to hit the floor. A bad practice is to put the gun on a shelf or the back of the toilet as you are lookin' to forget it on that shelf when you leave. Try your best to have physical control of the firearm at all times...
