Yep, Mark Wilson with his Glock lost against a guy with a rifle, but it wasn't the rifle/pistol dichotomy that resulted in Wilson's loss, but the fact that the bad guy was wearing body armor. Wilson shot the guy several times before the bad guy turned and shot Wilson. Unfortunately, most of the rounds hit the body armor.

True, it's not the rifle/pistol dichotomy, but the pistol/body armor one. My point was that the pistols that most CCW holders have on them are very limited in what they can do. So how can you know if this "crazed shooter" didn't come to the gun fight with the appropriate attire? Pistols are convenient to carry but I don't think they make good intervention weapons to step in an ongoing shoot out that doesn't seem to currently involve you.

If pistols don't make good intervention weapons for a fight that doesn't involve you, then they aren't good intervention weapons for a fight that does. The capabilities of the pistol/caliber doesn't change based on who is in the fight.

Strange thing about Mark Wilson. He was a firearms instructor and had been for years. He of all people should have engaged the shooter and upon realizing the shooter wasn't responding appropriately to being shot should have chosen alternative failure to stop targets, but he didn't. As I said and has been noted, you have to be smart about the decisions you make. Mark Wilson could have engaged the shooter from his apartment window above the square in Tyler with one of his rifles, but for some odd reason chose to leave his apartment and run downstairs to the street to provide help. He didn't bring a rifle with him either, but he owned rifles that could have been used. His actions were heroic and he is credited with saving lives, but his actions were not necessarily smart.
