Circuit Judge for home defense

Roger - RPZ had the right idea. Shoot some .410 slugs and see how their accuracy compares to the .45LC rounds. If the LC rounds are more accurate, forget the shotshells for HD completely. Only use shotshells for snakes and varmints - the 4-legged ones.

I want to ask, what happens with the gas that blows out the cylinder to barrel gap? Does that hit your arm? That would have been a problem with the 1858 Remington carbine, although with black powder muzzleloaders, there as always the risk of chain fire, so you'd never want to put anything in front of the "pepperbox" and a fore-end grip was not to be used.

A lot of talk about penetration, knock down power, so on and so forth, BUT, no one I know who has been shot (and I've known a few shot with everything from rock salt to 30-06) has wanted to be shot again with anything. Shoot what you can shoot accurately. The presence of gunfire generally gets everyone hopping no matter the caliber.

It's kind of a strange choice and ammo is too expensive to practice much with, but whatever. It might be more important that she's happy with it.

Federal's buckshot is MEAN and probably the best shot option. .45 LC is nothing to sneeze at either. As long as she's aware of the actual pattern and you don't let her use birdshot, it will probably be sufficient.

I reload both cartridges so cost is a lot less than store bought

Shot one just to see the big deal = still think it would make a great anchor for a small boat.

Those "groups" were pitiful, unless fired from at least 10 yards ?.

I would happily buy the lighter version,IF they would make it with a cylinder to ONLY fire .45Colt rounds.[ it would shorten the cylinder a great deal ]

That would be THE best snubby and primary or BUG ever.

I can’t stand the Judge and the Governor. Nothing but gimmicks to me. Just give me a revolver in .45 Colt.

I've been eyeing one of these hard. Been fascinated with the concept of just tossing a stock and longer barrel on handguns to make a carbine since I started learning more about WWI. Do you fire this with the support hand on the forend or is the cylinder blast an issue? I'd never get one for anything more than a novelty gun.

As far as for HD for the Missus I think if it is something she wants to shoot it is better than something that will just sit in the safe. I have that problem with my wife so glad to see someone's wife is taking an interest.

There are blast shields in front of cylinder on both sides. I was shooting in a t shirt,no problem with cylinder blast

I loaded up some rounds 45 lc with 255 gr XTP bullets with 7.2,7.4, 7.9 gr Tight Group Hornady brass and winchester primers,I will take it out friday and shoot from bench to what it likes and then adjust sights.then i will post my results. My redhawk likes the 7.9 gr load.so will see what the circuit judge likes

OP, my brain kept telling me straight revolver, not carbine, my bad. If she likes it and shoots it well I believe she is good to go.

I would stay away from buckshot too.

I don't know, being able to launch five missiles with each pull of the trigger doesn't sound bad to me.

I have shot buck from a judge and I have cared for patients who were shot with bird shot. I would have no problem with buck at combat ranges. [10 yards or less]

Remember this is the ladies first gun. She is probably not a experienced shooter. Even experienced shooters miss under stress, for a beginner it is far worse. Multiple projectiles will increase hit probability. A hit with a buckshot is better than a miss with a bullet.

winner 7.9 gr Trail Boss, 255 gr XTP .1096 fps + or - 2fps across crony, 1.25 " groups from rest at 25 yards all with in 2" circle 25 yards off hand

Guys this woman is 5 foot 1" and weighs 104 pounds not Dirty Harry lol. My home defense gun is a different story.
Thats not a hindrance, no one made a comment on the ability of the shooters ability to handle recoil, out of firearm with a stock a .45 colt no matter how warm is not going to punch as hard as even the weaker center fire rifles do, accuracy is going to be key though and it seems that although she aint making quarter size groups at 50 yards she is shooting MOB (Minute of Badguy) which is fine.

Funny how a 38 special or 9mm is adequate, but 45 Colt isn't.
That is about as far from my choice of home defense as I can get, but it is far better than no weapon.
Dont know who suggested that .45 colt isn't my reply was how .45 colt is a good round especially out of a carbine or rifle length barrel, the flack that the gun is getting is over using .410 shells for defense, they just dont penetrate the way that people who use these firearms think, Goosey on here posted a vid of a gel block, but Paul Harrel does a much more realistic test on his channel showing the mediocrity of .410 shells, Here it is and also he has a part 2 if you want to see it :

I agree the 410 loads are mediocre

I glossed over the 45 Colt part. I apologise.
I have watched most of his videos and agree that 410 birdshot is a poor choice.
I have slaughtered butcher steers using 3" 4 shot. It has so little energy that you don't get bloodshot meat.

Ive seen similar results with using .22 and .25 caliber rounds in bovine animals, I myself used to carry a beretta 950 jetfire as a "boot" gun but it fell out of favor with me.

The reason she chose this carbine is because she had done some shooting with Stevens 410 that I have and liked that. So I thought this would be a gun she would practice with. And she has been out 3 times with it in 2 weeks so I think it will be a good fit.I have many handguns in various calibers that she will not shoot. And with the 45lc she will do fine.

While it wouldnt be my first choice, or even second or third, in .45 colt it will be packing a wallop on anything it hits, picking a good hollow point is really not even a concern in .45 caliber, what I would really work on in that platform is accuracy which if she is a beginner with it will take some time but like i said before MOB is fine, and reloading speeds hell I dont even know how speed reloads would work in that thing, you can try maybe getting some speedloaders? If you do keep in mind you dont have to buy the M25 holders from HKS the much more common 29 model is the same model with just a different model.
