Double Murder Suspect Scott Eizember Captured in Texas

Massive Effort Underway In Search For Suspected Killer Lufkin, TX - There is new information about the events that led to the capture of double murder supsect Scott Eizember. Eizember is in a Texas hospital recovering from four gunshot wounds that came from a gun concealed by one of his alleged kidnapping victims.
Authorities with the Angelina County Sheriff's Department say they received a 911 call at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday night. The caller said a man and woman, now identified as Dr. Samuel Peebles and his wife Suzanne, came to his residence bleeding and needing help. The couple told the man they had stopped to help a stranded motorist in Arkansas and that he had displayed a gun and forced them to drive south.
The Peebles did not know the man was Eizember.

While driving through Angelina County, the Peebles convinced Eizember to allow them to use the restroom. That's when an altercation ensued between Dr. Peebles and Eizember at which point Eizember was shot four times. Dr. Peebles had been able to recover a handgun that was concealed in the minivan.
Eizember assaulted both Samuel and Suzanne Peebles before taking off in their van. He attempted to get help for his wounds at a grocery store, but an employee of the store called the Corrigan, Texas police department to report a man with gunshot wounds and carrying a weapon inside the store.
Authorities from Corrigan and Polk County were able to get a description of the minivan and eventually stopped Eizember, who told them he had been shot by an unknown assailant while his vehicle was stopped along the road.
Officers contacted paramedics, who treated Eizember at the scene. A pistol discovered by police was confiscated.
Eizember was transported to Memorial Hospital in Lufkin where he was treated for his wounds. It was at this point that it was learned of Eizember's identity and what had really happened.
The Peebles were transported to Lufkin Hospital where they are in stable condition.
It brings an end to the more than five week manhunt for Eizember, who faces two counts of first degree murder in the October 18th shooting deaths of A.J. and Patsy Cantrell of Depew.
He also faces one charge of shooting with intent to kill in the shooting of Tyler Montgomery and a charge of assault and battery with a deadly weapon in the beating of Montgomery's grandmother, Carla Wright.
An intense, three-week manhunt ended on November sixth when a thorough search of a wooded area near Bristow turned up nothing.
Then, Sunday morning, an elderly Depew woman discovered a man believed to be Eizember at a food pantry near the First Methodist Church. In her rush to escape, she left her keys in the door and her car was stolen.
It's believed Eizember took the vehicle and went east into Arkansas, where he kidnapped Dr. Samuel and Suzanne Peebles near Waldron, about 35 miles southeast of Fort Smith.
At about 2:30, Creek County authorities say Kathy Biggs, Eizember's ex-girlfriend, received a frantic phone call from a woman who said she was with Eizember and that he was coming to get Biggs. Police began tracing the phone calls, but before they could locate him, the shooting in Texas had taken place.
Creek County authorities are expected to go to Lufkin, Texas today

Gee--I wonder why I haven't heard a thing about this until now. :banghead:

Yeah, I wonder what the Peebles' gun was and where the Dr. struck the BG and leave the latter able to assault them. Were the Peebles shot or beaten?

It was apparently a .22:

TULSA, Okla. - An Arkansas man knew his parents were in trouble long before they faced down an Oklahoma murder suspect on an East Texas road.

Samuel Peebles Jr. had seen the "Most Wanted" photos of Scott James Eizember. He knew someone had tried to call Eizember's former girlfriend from his mother's cell phone.

He also knew what Eizember did not - that Dr. Samuel and Suzanne Peebles never traveled without a gun. They kept it for protection.

"It's something we do here in the South," the younger Peebles said Monday.

For 37 days, Eizember had been the subject of a manhunt in northeast Oklahoma. He was accused of killing an elderly Depew, Okla., couple, beating another woman and wounding a 16-year-old boy. Authorities described him as psychotic and expressed fears their suspect would kill again.

But the 54-year-old Nashville, Ark., emergency room doctor and his 50-year-old wife, a registered nurse, saw only someone in need when they came upon Eizember lying on or along a road near Waldron, Ark., Sunday afternoon. He appeared injured.

They did what people knew them to do in such situations - offered help, their son said.

"He has stopped and helped several people in accidents and car wrecks," Peebles said of his father.

After feigning injury and gaining access to the couple's van, he said, Eizember pulled a gun and forced the couple to drive south "toward Mexico, where he said he wanted to go."

He also made a call on the Peebles' cell phone - to his former girlfriend in Depew, Okla., the woman law officers believe he was stalking, Peebles Jr. said.

Eizember was suspected of killing A.J. and Patsy Cantrell on Oct. 18 to use their home to watch the neighboring home of Kathy Biggs' mother.

The call alerted law officers who contacted the Peebles' family to tell them they believed the couple had fallen into danger.

"We knew he had them, but we didn't know where they were," Peebles Jr. said.

The wait for news was agonizing.

Meanwhile, the younger Peebles said his father tried to reason with the couple's abductor. He finally persuaded Eizember to let him stop to use the restroom along a rural road in East Texas.

That's when the doctor grabbed the .22-caliber pistol his wife kept in the driver's side door panel.

He fired four shots, three of them striking Eizember, Peebles Jr. said. The fourth was a misfire.

Eizember lunged at Peebles, overpowering the 5-8, 180-pound doctor, his son said. Peebles Sr. broke his thumb when he jammed it into Eizember's gun in an attempt to prevent it from going off.

The suspect beat the doctor in the head with his gun so hard the gun broke, authorities said. The suspect then turned on Mrs. Peebles and beat her.

Authorities caught up with a wounded Eizember about 10 miles away. Angelina County Sheriff Kent Henson said Eizember confessed to the slayings as well as the abduction of the Peebles.

The Peebles were treated and released at a Lufkin, Texas, hospital and spent a day recuperating at a hotel before returning home, their son said.

He called them heroes.

"We are so happy to have them coming home," Peebles Jr. said. "This is going to be one of our greatest Thanksgivings."

Yeah this is great! I just saw an expose on this story on CNN, and Bahbah Wahwah is interviewing the courageous couple on her show later next week!

Not.

This guy had allegedly stated to the Peebles when he kidnapped them to the effect of " I have already killed some folks in Oklahoma and I won't hesitate to kill again." I don't think the Dr. or Mrs. Peebles would have had much of a chance for survival had it not been for the gun in the minivan. :fire: I am happy that they are OK. Eizember is a crazy sumbitch. The authorities have been searching for him for over a month after a double homicide in Depew, OK. (near Tulsa)

Has anyone seen the victims speak on TV? I'm confused by the various media reports. One said that Pebbles accessed a firearm from inside the van and used it, other reports sound like he struggled with Eizember (possibly shooting Eizember with his own gun?).

Commentary:
In February, OSHP Superintendant Paul McClellan made the ridiculous statement that "there is no statistical or anecdotal evidence which supports that concealment and transportation of a weapon in a motor vehicle is effective or safe as a defensive or deterrent measure."

McClellan also claims that "because the fundamental nature of motor vehicles allows those who feel threatened to simply drive away, the argument that motorists need loaded concealed weapons is weak."

Perhaps the fact that the OSHP is much more familiar with general traffic laws than violent crimes (see: OSHP Activity Summary 1995-2002) gives reason for such ignorance of what is going on in our state.

A word of thank and a change in thinking

First, thank you to those who posted our article in this thread. Knowing that our news is read outside of our demographic target area is a nice touch.

Secondly, I am a former police officer. Despite knowing the very real violent dangers that exist I chose not to carry my firearm outside of my home. This incident has changed that self-imposed restriction and I will now carry my weapon when I am in the public.

I made the decision to not carry my weapon after a shooting I was involved with. On the advice of other officers who do not carry their weapons with them, I aligned myself to that ideology.

The chances of someone making me the victim of a violent crime are sparce, but I will no longer wager my safety against a statistical study. Those papers and researchers cannot save my life when the unexpected happens.

Again, thank you for your readership and I hope that some of you continue to enjoy Sapulpa Today.

Just saw Dr P interviewed on KATV channel 7 out of Little Rock. Apparantly, his gun was in the door of his vehicle. He thought he fired it 4 times but said the police told him he had fired it 8 times. (Did not say what caliber it was.) Then both he and his wife were beaten with the perp's gun which (he said) had a broken firing pin-said they had been held hostage with a gun that wouldn't fire.

Good guy, good that he was armed and good outcome.
