Close quarters caliber?

Not to be flippant, but if you are that concerned about over penetration then the Louisville Slugger is probably your best option. My real answer is to pick a caliber that is the most powerful you can aim and stop the threat in the fewest shots possible. Fewer shots needed equates to fewer opportunities for an innocent to get hit by over penetration, or more than likely a miss.

You're more likely to miss and hit a bystander with a small, hard to aim 380 than a reasonable size .45!! I'd make the pastor aware of that!

I'd pick the .357sig or maybe the .45acp...

My 1st choice; the .357sig. It is in use by the US Secret Service and FAMS(Air Marshals) for these reasons.

The .45acp is a good pick too. It moves slower but has a lot of punch. It's large hole may be very scary too, ;).

PS: get a DA only type pistol too. The HK lem or SIG type DAK system.

+1 for the Sig and some of the smaller (i.e. less chunky) Hk pistols.

I also agree with bpl, though depending on the pistol, the 380 can be reasonably well controlled. For example, my Bersa 380 was terrible yet for some reason my Kel-Tec P3AT is remarkably accurate (though it is a cheese grater on the hands).

I will definitley show him the ballistics test over the next couple days and see if that changes his view on things. If he wants me to carry a .380 then I will but I am still going to find a nice .45 for carry every other day. I will let you know what happens. I used to have a sig .380 and it was a very nice gun, wouldn't mind having one of those again.

Let me tell you something that I learned about 15 years ago! If the fight doesn't concern me, personally; this ole boy doesn't get involved. It does not pay to be someone elses protector!! That's a hard pill to swallow, I know. But in many instances, even family ain't worth it (don't ask me how I know that). Makes you want to barf. But you wind up in deep doo doo and it's your backside that's in the sling while all the others have profitted off your love, care and generosity. To heck with the fellow workes, the fellow church members and the pastor too for that matter. Take care of you and let everybody else fend for themselves. Now rip me a new one if you want, but remember you have been warned.

AMEN!!!

I would recommend the .45ACP Winchester Ranger T or Remington Golden Sabre. I think the the larger size and expansion of the .45 allow it to slow down and deposit its energy quicker.

You have to hit your target, otherwise it really deosn't matter what round you useing. Most rounds pass through much of anything better than they do people.

The best way to prevent your bullets from hurting anyone is to make sure they hit your intended target. A badguy is a safer barrier than a board or thin wall.

Or you can look into a round desighned exactly for its lack of ricochets, overpen, and is less likely to carry energy through a wall or 2. One desighned to minimize friendly fire in a CQB situation.........the FN 5.7x28.

Flame suit on.
