CMP M1 Garand Service Grade

Going up to Anniston in 2 days! Should be at the south store by 12:00pm. I called and Leon said that all of the current service grade rifles are in pefect shape and have brand new CMP stocks on them. Which is good and bad...good cause it'll look like a new rifle...bad because it looses it's history.

Thats the worst thing about the Service Grades. Most of them have ugly birch commercial stocks.
Have Fun picking out your new rifle

This thread has really made we want to sell off some of my collection and grab a garand! I think it would look nice next to my Mauser, Mosin, and Enfield. Hey Sapp, is that Palm Coast, Fl?

Even with the barrel and action built in January '55, the better condition made me glad that all of my components missed WW2 and Korea.

Have fun at the CMP store.

The .308 caliber Garands are often called Navy, and my friend won several in matches on the Navy Team years ago. Some he sold for over $2,000 each.

I've been waiting for 1 1/2 years; I'm laying in a bed in Oxford, AL, 1.1 miles from the South Store; They open in 11 1/2 hours.....I'm reliving that whole Christmas Eve feeling from my childhood!

I'm workin' on it! We had to drive another 5 hours today to reach the place we're staying, so I'm just now getting around to taking some pictures.

I actually met sappnasty there this morning as well. Nice guy! We got our picture taken with Leon (the South Store Garand Guru), and he took a bunch of other shots; I'm guesing he'll have a nice write-up before long. I elected to take my rifle with because I couldn't bear to be away from her until I get home!

There are many like it,

But this one is MINE!

Late production (5.8 million) Springfield
CMP Field Grade (saved $100 for another can of ammo!)
bolt, op rod, barrel, receiver all SA
trigger group HRA (hammer IHC :D )
TE2+
ME1+
wood matches, but is pretty beat up. I was looking for good metal for a shooter. I'm happy with how she looks with the old Walnut, so I'll leave her as-is. Looks good & broke in to my eye.

Leon looked a little shocked that it was tagged as a FG, and said, "you found a good one". That made me feel pretty proud of myself.

She was hidden amongst the WRA SG's

Any guesses what was screwed onto the left side here?

I also picked up an appropriate late bayonet, and some ammo. The ammo is beautiful, and an incredible deal. Going to the CMP store and picking YOUR rifle is definitely near the top of the shooter's bucket list. I think I'll name mine after my daughter, as it is my hope she will enjoy it someday when I'm gone. Of course, that means I'll have to buy another one for each future child, but I don't mind :D

Awesome, looks good. That rifle will clean up great, wait and see.

The holes are from grenade launcher sights.

Those new cases look great - much nicer than my cardboard boxes.

Looks great Geneseo1911! Congrats on the new addition. Tim's right, the holes are for mounting the grenade sight. Happy shooting!

Okay, here it finally is....The day I have been waiting for for years finally came. I have always wanted an M1 Garand every since I was yonger. But when I heard about the CMP, I was very excited and have been planning to go for a few years now. Well this year's tax check was better than expected and I finally got the go ahead from the wife to not only buy 1, but 2! The stars finally aligned and we had the same days off and the money to go. So at 12:00am, Wednsday morning (02-09-2011) with the kids sleeping and wearning their pajamas, we loaded the truck and and headed out. When I typed in the address to my GPS, I was a little discouraged to find out that it would be an 8 hour drive....and I knew I was in for a long night.

But suprisingly, the trip went very quick and we actually arrived there in 6 hours and 45 minutes (yes I was doing 85 the whole way. But one thing I didn't account for....Alabama is 1 hour behind Florida's time...so instead of arriving there just in time for opening, I was an hour early...DOUGH! So I waited like a little kid for Christmas day. I was actully suprised to find that the parking lot was packed with several people waiting at the store entrance. So I got out in the 24 degree weather and waited like the rest.

I did notice that there was a guy there with Illinois plates...so lated I asked and come to find out, it was TheHighRoad.org member Geneseo1911! Small world. Once I walked in, I was amazed at the mount of Garands in the store. I immediately met with Leon, who helped me pick out my first Springfield M1....The only unfortunate thing was that all of the service grade Springfields had new birch CMP stocks. But Leon told me I could always get another G.I. stock or stain and tung oil the newer stock making it beautiful. He definately found me a shooter!

With a 1+ME and a 2+TE, I was happy. So on to the next pick...another Springfield? Or an HRA? Well I chose another Springfield because the HRA's also had new stocks on them...however, the HRA's wood color was un-appealing to my eyes. But this time I got lucky again. I found a rifle that measured right at 0+ME and 2+TE...One is in the 5.8 million and the second in the 5.4 million range. They also both had all Springfield parts amazingly! YAY! Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures of either one that I bought....but I did take a bunch of other pictures posted below. Due to the price, I had both rifles shipped to my house (I should get them Tuesday) and took a can of ammo with me.

Yes, it was hard leaving the rifles behind...but at a grand total of around 1400, I had already spent enough. So, for anyone considering going to the store...GO. It was an awesome life experience which will not be around forever. Everyone was more than helpful including the other customers. Great trip, awesome people and I learned a ton! Enjoy the pics!!!

OVERALL...AWESOME TRIP!

Awesome, thanks for the pics. I've been to the North Store twice, and these pics make me think I need to get down South in the next couple of years.

Nice score on the Field Grade.
While I would never mail order a Field Grade if you can handpick one thats the way to go. I have never bought a Service Grade myself but all my handpicked Field Grades fall in the Service Grade description:)
I beleive the Square P is a indication that the rifle went through a rebuild at either Red River and San Antonio arsenals

Wow, that is so cool.
Great write-up and pics Sappnasty. Thanks for sharing the story.
Good luck with your new M1s.

Just curious, since Geneseo is from IL, why didn't he go to the OH store?

Sounds like a good trip. Just makes me want a garand even more now. Guess I need to look into registering with cmp.

Just curious, since Geneseo is from IL, why didn't he go to the OH store?

Probably because it is closer to him. Parts of Il are closer to the North store, while parts are closer to the South Store.

ETA: The south store is also bigger, from what I understand. Maybe thats why.

Well, the OH store is a couple hours closer to home. I had been making plans to go to Port Clinton this winter, but my folks rented a place on the beach in Panama City, so it worked out very well to hit up the south store, which I understand is bigger anyway. Now if I just can convince everyone to make this an annual ritual!

Thanks to the guys who enlightened me to the grenade sights. I found Numrich has them for $8, so I went ahead and ordered one since the holes are there anyway. Of course, now I have to get the M7 launcher, the adapter, and an inert pineapple.

My wife wasn't happy about the cosmoline on one of my best sweatshirts!

Some great photos Sappnasty! I especially like the close-ups! We expect to see some pictures of your M1's when you get them.

Nice score!!!! You found your FG in with the WRA's because someone liked it, an put it there to maybe come back an get it later....thats my guess....I hand picked a FG SA, an a FG HRA from N. Store an they are great shooters......You did good at the S. Store., last I heard the N.Store was out of SA SG an most of the HRA SG had new orange stocks....Now make that thing go PING!!!!.....a bunch of times is preferred.

Well, the OH store is a couple hours closer to home.

Sorry for being a bit off topic, but are you from Geneseo?

Do you ever shoot at the Oak Hills Gun club? They have some CMP matches from what I understand.

I live in Waterloo IA, but I have family down the road from you in Hampton.
