concealed carry badges?

The ONLY reason for having a CCW badge is so that you can allow others to form the impression that you are a cop.

Now come on, d.m., surely you understand that kwikrnu can't be held responsible for what erroneous impressions other folks make when they see a gun and badge...wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

The only reason to have a CCW badge is so that you don't get shot by the police, after the self defense shooting takes place. When the cops arrive on the scene, it might prevent them from shooting the victim/CCW by mistake when they arrive on the scene. All questions of what the badge represents could be sorted out later. Hell, cops have been known to shoot other COPS by mistiake, be they undercover, off duty, etc, when involved in a shooting. Anything that buys you a little more "safety" in a high stress incident MIGHT be worth it. And if people want to make fun of you because they don't see a reason for it, let them. If I was a cop responding to a shooting, I might question if the presence of a CCW badge had anything to do with pretending to be a cop, or aggravating the event, but if no information led me to believe that it had any negative aspects, I'd treat it like ot was just what it is, an aid to identifying a CCW carrier (after all, isn't that what is printed on the badge?) A badge means nothing without the authority to go with it.

OMG! This is hilarious! This same thread is on a brand-X forum, right now. And the posts seem to be identical.

The only thing I didn't see (but I really didn't search) is the expression "MALL NINJA"!:neener:

Every time I see someone shirt-printing their "Concealed Carry" that is the term I think of. The badge would just seal it for me!

So, how are you planning on doing this? Do you wear it around your neck on a chain everywhere you go? Will you wave it around while in a firefight? Or is it pinned to your holster, where it will flash everyone when your coat happens to "accidentally" flap open to expose your weapon?

Why not buy a raid jacket with "Good Guy" written on the back?

The best way to avoid getting shot after a self defense shooting, is to understand justifiable homicide, and what's known as AOJ (Ability, Opportunity and Jeopardy). For instance when the cruiser pulls up with lights flashing lay down on the ground with your hands clasped behind your neck before your asked. You're going to be arrested anyway while the cops figure out whether any offense has been committed (unlawful discharge of a firearm for instance). You might get shot anyway, but, at least if you survive you have a good lawsuit against the shooter, or your family has an excellent case against the shooter.

Going to pull out your secret decoder ring that identifies you as a holding a CCW is more likely to get you shot. So it has no practical purpose, other than confusing possible witnesses as to whether you're a cop, or just one of them.

If it wasn't intended to confuse then the question needs to be asked, why does it look like (forget the wording) an official police badge? Why not make it look like this...

If it's entire purpose is solely to protect you from risk of getting shot by an officer in pursuit of his duty? Maybe because the people buying these have a motivation that is more than protection, so making a badge that looked like the image above wouldn't meet that motivation.

All you naysayers must be armchair folks. Look, you can buy a badge that says ANYTHING on it. Hell, a cop's badge is worthless unless he has a valid I.D. to go with it. As many have pointed out, you can buy a cop badge, too. Many people collect them. Now, back to the shooting. I used to work in Cleveland, OH, on the night shift, for a department with police authority within the city (not Cleveland PD, but in co-operation with them). Shootings were not commonplace, but not uncommon. We had a few. First, and formost, was if you had to shoot someone, it was GOOD to secure (handcuff) the assailant, for safety (if possible; if off duty, it was discretionary, based on officer safety), AND secure the assailant's weapon (it was not unheard of to have byststanders STEAL the gun or knife, etc, to help the badguy, or just have a "souvenir"). This might include STANDING ON THE WEAPON, if necessary. In many shootings, the officer, or citizen defending themself might be behind cover, out of sight, preesence obstructed (by a crowd, surroundings, etc). Not easily seen. To the matter of a badge, in all the plainclothes officer shootings, the officer had his badge out, gun holstered (unless still covering the suspect), often waving his badge to the arriving officers. Yeah, it's all so confusing until DEFUSED, but as stated, a badge gets your attention, and draws you to it, causing you to be less inclined to SHOOT THE GUY HOLDING IT. A cop might get pissy because you HAVE A badge, but that can be dealt with later. As stated before, do what you want, but I am not going to rain on anyone's parade if they WANT to pack a CCW badge. Use it simply to I.D. yourself as the guy with the gun. Maybe states should make it mandatory?

funny, raising your empty hands in the air seems like a much better way of indicating, "don't shoot me" than pointing a shiny object in the direction of an approaching officer while standing over some dead guy

Well when you put it like that, duh! :)

When the state of Indiana uses a badge as a CCW permit I will get one. Till then I stand by my opinion than they are more dangerous than useful.

I think we ought to shut this one down. If you have anything else to add, save it until next week when someone asks again. :)
