Cops find themselves in arms race with criminals

Whoa - these cops JUST found out they are in an arms race with the criminals? Cops have been in an arms race with criminals, (and losing) for a lot longer than anyone reading this has been alive.

I think we should bombard this newspaper with emails about the inaccuracies in their reporting. Ak-47s may not shoot from the hip, but we can shoot detractions from our mouths.

"We're having more than one officer shot and killed a week. I

I would think that if more than one officer was being killed a week then we'd be hearing about it. Was that nation wide or local?

We had two local officers shot last night, news reports still getting sorted out in Milwaukee, both officers were doing well the last I heard.

Maybe the problem is not "assault weapons" (is there a non-assault weapon?) but,oh just throwing this out here...a cycle of poverty and dependence on a welfare state? Growing disillusion with said state? Cultures that glorify violence and criminal stigmas, and portray the police as bad guys? The War on Drugs, which keeps the price of drugs artificially inflated, therefore making the risk of selling drugs worth it to young capitalists, who are then persecuted for wanting to make a buck? Maybe there'd be less criminals if they had a better chance to make a living doing something else, rather than perpetuating the cycle of gang violence?

Just sayin'. What do I know.

I think I agree with you on 99% of the above. I do think if some idiot want to ruin his body with drugs let him, I just have a problem with ruining his family and most importantly children he needs to take care of with their addiction

The way I see "gun violence" is not the easy access to guns . Its the reliance on people of the state, and pure lazieness yes your country is there to take care of you but WHAT HAVE YOU DONE to take care of your country!?!?!?
Give people welfare/child care/education services---but MAKE them work for it and repay the services that are given, Not me or the others who work hard for a living and never ask their country for anything in return. I suppose I could quote JFK here but you understand me I think.

Everybody wants to blame someone for the problems of society and not take responsibility, especially people from the "brady bunch". What do they REALLY do to help out these so called disenfranchised people of gun violence? Do they volunteer their time with child care while mother gets an education? Do they teach a skill or trade to those that need them? No they dont. They only inflate their own egos by beating the drum the loudest to only those that agree with them.

And what have I done? Served my country for the past 17 yrs and during that time volunteered (overseas albeit) at orphanages, schools for problem students and coached Special Olympics skiing in Idaho. Its not hard to take a couple of hours a month and work at a womens shelter, job center etc. How many hours do you sit in front of the TV ?

so sorry rant over.--I saw this article at work tonight and it got me wound up--knew it would have a few pages by the time i came home too.

But good for the police being well armed, let them have better than the low life's that would hurt them. But shame on them (Certain ones!) that want to disarm those that are willing to defend their families/freedom and country!

Designed to be fired from the hip, assault rifles such as the AK-47 can spray at a rate of up to 600 rounds a minute in full automatic mode. It is the weapon of choice for guerillas and gangsters.

wow, fired from the hip, and i've been shooting from my shoulder this whole time.

Quote:
They don't have .38s anymore. They have AK-47s. ...They have automatic weapons now
This statement dates to, 1947.

hmm... 1920's anyone? the police are always on the losing end of the arms race

The author wrote:

... big guns .... big guns ... big guns ..

Again the misperception that the .223 can make an elephant explode but the lowly .375 H&H isn't worth attention.

... pinpoint accuracy from as far as 100 yards ...

Tell me it ain't so! No gun should have accuracy beyond 20 feet because that would make them too deadly, but any gun that is not manufactured well should be outlawed because it's cheap specs make it a Saturday Night Special (catch 22).

the ak47 is hip-fired?
I was wondering what the stock was for!
now I get it.
This is rediculous.
These weapons are not bought in full auto.
they are rigged illegally to do so.

Did you guys know that the M1 garand is on the list of firearms to be included in the next ban?
Man, I love those full auto assault garands!
bull****

It's ironic that, in the same breath, the media can decry both the spraying AND the accurate firing of bullets. "We are afraid of inaccurate gunfire, and also accurate gunfire, but please believe that we are objective."

We are like soldiers. It is a war
I always worry about LEO comparing themselves to soldiers. I hated it when I worked in the field, I hate it even more now! Too many implications about further removing themselves from the civilian population for my taste.

It's clear we are entering a police state. Before this can happen police will have to arm themselves like military. Apparently what they are doing.

Anyone know what a typical LE rifle course consists of?

I just had my 6 month qualification today

4 rounds standing position @ 25 yards

4 rounds standing position @ 50 yards

4 rounds kneeling position @ 50 yards

4 rounds prone position @ 100 yards

must score 13 out of 16 to pass. life size silhouette target

Was there ANYTHING in that article that was factual?

I don't think so, and I highly question the motives of the author and publisher.

Wonder if this is an effort to stir up anti-gun press pre-heller.

13 of 16 "A" zone/"5" zone, I assume?

I'm not knocking on you, but that sounds like a joke. I was expecting more like IPSC with a rifle type stuff. It's hard to zero a rifle with only 4 rounds.

And we are surprised by this article why?

Sarah Brady has admitted in the past that she would lie to further her bid on stripping America of it's right to bear arms. While the Brady people say they are just for sensible gun laws, which already exist, they don't want any guns. Period.

You can go two ways after being a victim of a gun crime.

1. I should have been armed or should have be allowed to be armed to protect myself or family members.

2. As a victim of a shooting, all guns should be banned so I can feel safe.

We all know how Sarah Brady and Carolyn McCarthy reacted.
We also know how Suzanna Gratia Hupp reacted.

They also don't mention that Palm Beach County deputies have been able to carry semi-auto rifles for over 6 years if the deputies bought them. It's not a recent problem.

It was much worse during the 80's in Miami. Bodies were always washing up or being found out in the Redlands during the high drug import days.

Yes gangs have been more active in South Florida in recent years thanks to law enforcements failure and the courts to do anything.

And yes a rash of shootings in PB County using semi-auto ak's and sks's has been real. But its also been 98% gang on gang violence.

It's real easy to spot the gang bangers and their straw buyers at the gun shows.

This weekends West Palm Beach show should see a few more of these folks.

4 and 5 are considered hits

I was thinking the exact same thing...

the rest aren't carrying anything at the moment

That was just the actual qualification course. We spent an hour sighting in our rifles on our first outing..firing ~50 rounds. I bought my own rifle so its zero'd to me and I'm the only one who carries it.

I was on the range for 8 hours today. We shot different courses using obstacles, firing from behind a patrol car, practicing drawing weapon from the mount ..exiting the car and shooting. We were even out to 200 yards for a while.

I didn't mean to make it sound like we fired the 16 rounds and went home.

Justin R,

Excellent! Sounds like a challenging fun filled 8 hrs.

Question sir... When you go out on shift, are you or have you ever been "outgunned"? What types of weaponry and training do your local BG's exhibit? Pre AR day or post, matters not, just curious.

I'm relatively new to the job (a few years on) but from what I've seen its mostly "spray and pray". I've worked about 4 crime scenes in which a semi auto AK type rifle was used..they were mostly someone shooting at a home from a moving car. The worst was one where a passenger in a vehicle took a 7.62 to the forehead ...wasn't pretty. I felt that it was a "lucky" shot considering the amount of holes in the truck

Its not that I feel out gunned but rather my main concern is being ambushed..thats what scares the hell out of me

Justin R:
That sounds like a very adequate qual for police officers.
It's very well rounded and seems fair.
People may think it's sub-par, compared to the qualifications for say,
a marine.
but a police officer is not a marine, nor is he supposed to be.

Yup, just like during prohibition

I was just working on a report for firearms in america and noticed certain similarities between the situation with the "Tommy Gun" a.k.a. "The Chopper" and the AK-47.

Unless I missed my guess, the Tommy had a much higher rate of fire didn't it(about 1500 rounds per minute)? It was lowered to an acceptable 600 rounds per minute...
