Come on guys, I thought it would be obvious.
A double stack magazine becomes narrower at the top where the ammo is inserted and fed into the pistols breach with both sides of the magazine coming together at a 45 degree angle looking like this: / \ .
As the round are pushed towards the top of the magazine the slanted metal of the magazine will grind slightly against the casing and bullet of the round. Since this doesn't happen with single stacks, the scraping on the bullet will be distinctive to double stacks. So, of course when the bullet is recovered it be checked for these distinctive markings. Plus, the fact these these marking came from a magazine means that it came from a semi-auto.
