I put in a motion sensing floodlight and their LAST foray ended in surprise and their running away.

But NOT LAST NIGHT. Light goes on. I yell. Grab BB gun.

.......................BUT............................

One of the lil buggers ......SQUARED OFF............on me.

Real tough guy. Bowed legs, steely stare, no remorse.

So.........this time I shot him in the FACE. "So what" he said.

Hadda pop him repeatedly to get him to turn tail.

NOW..........a new question.

This is all happening within a range of 5 yards. Bedroom slider to fish pond. How about .38 spl SHOT loads? Been thinking of low power wadcutters and KNOW they would do it, but would like to be able to make a ...........faster............shot.

You know.....the kind where you can turn off the light BEFORE the neighbors wake up.

What think of shot from .38? I used some years ago and was not impressed with the pattern at all. Have they improved?

Problem is the 2" barrel. This is my CCW gun and the only one that is not in the safe because it will be carried each day.

Should mention......I have loaded my Beeman R8 with the SOLID lead BB. It doesn't state the weight on the can but estimate 25 grains or so.

The Beeman is rated at 800 fps with the reg. pellet so would estimate 450 or so with the heavier one.

Think that would break any bone?
 
coons can be surprisingly tough little fellers... i shot one at 20 yards w/ a 357, and he was not anchored. i've also put 38 specials into 'em from 15 yards, and they didn't drop... i've also hammered 'em w/ a 22 from a rifle, and while seriously wounded, continued to run...

point is, you either need to get serious about using something w/ a little more pop, or just live w/ 'em. a 22lr fired from a rifle from within a house is very unlikely to make enough racket to wake the neighbors... but i would be very careful about laws. discharging a firearm within city limits (if that is where you live) is generally regarded as naughty.
 
You could consider a live trap...

I think that ignoring a trap for a few days could motivate any occupants of the trap to stay away permanently.

If I DID get him in a live trap, I would of course want to test how well a raccoon can SWIM in a cage.

Don't try an immediate killing shot with the Beeman. Shoot him in the guts where the pellet can penetrate the hide and do some damage to his innards. I know it's not the most humane way to kill them, but most of them will eventually die.
 
45 Auto shotshells pattern best of the whole lot IME. They will cycle my guns, 1/3 oz of #9 shot.

If 'noise' is a problem I suggest a slingshot with marbles. A BIG ugly rubber snake tossed at 'em will make run. Big rubber snakes, imitation owls, Habenerao ( sp?) peppers and some other peppers tend to keep at bay. They ever get a thumb we are in for trouble. Imitation critters after a bit won't work, curious as they are they figure it out.

Marbles from a slingshot here in the city they figured real quick-hurt. Still haven't figured where coming from...balcony slingshot sniper duty no lights, just ambient light. I don't do nightsights anyway...its that human computer, eye to hand dealie. I sure miss the big ball bearings of yore for this tho'...
 
well.......... even varmints deserve to be dispatched in as humane a manner as possible. Messing around trying to kill an animal with a BB gun is just, well, I should not say it.

If you have to do the 'coon in, use something effective.

When I used to fur trap when I was younger I had a Daisy BB gun, I believe it was a 660 that you pumped up to whatever velocity you wanted, ten pumps with a steel BB would penetrate the skull right between and slightly above the eyes from about two feet. I dispatched dozens of coons this way. Except for the one that woke up as I was carrying it up the ditch bank :eek: That was a real eye opener:what: I started using a .22 with shorts after that episode.:rolleyes:

I figured tha BB was running about 780fps at ten pumps. A lead BB will flatten and not penetrate the skull unless you put it through the eye socket and that doesn't guerantee a quick kill.
 
.22LR is your best bet. Use Rem subsonic hollow points or something similar. I suppose a regular .38 special of any sort would work fine too (except for shot, the small pellets probably won't get through the hide very well, its very tough)
If you hit it solidly in the head, or possibly a good heart lung shot it will start floppin. They hardly ever drop right dead for you (I've killed about 50 in the last 3 years) If you get him anchored and are patient, he will probably quit kicking and die in a minute or so, its not real loud usually. Or you could shoot it a few times more, or run out and club it with something.

Air rifles are iffy. I've dispatched a handful of coons with a .177 rated at 1000 fps, and if you use the right type of pellet (pointed suck , they don't make a big enough hole. Probably the same for lead BB's, you need domed/wadcutter/or even hollowpoint if you can get some heavy ones) Its pretty marginal, if you can hit em right in the brain they go to floppin, but it has to be right there. A .22 air rifle may do better due to the bigger hole, but I really like to stick with .22rimfire or bigger.
 
1. Animal control will come out and trap them for you in many cases if you are metro.
2. If not,a representaive of your local wildlife resources dept will do likewise.
A phone call migth just do it all;>

Topgun as a FYI, you might realize that a lead BB in a lighter weight than normal airgun pellets will cause premature spring fatigue in a spring-piston airgun. I wouldn't mess around with ultra-lightweight rounds in such an expensive gun.
 
I'm having flashbacks to the "what's the best round for killing a charging grizzly" threads.

You should look into killing the coons and selling the hides = more $$$ for toys

Everything else has been suggested except a blowgun. You could make a poison and dip the point of the dart in it.
 
Marlin 17. The little .17 magnum rounds are really necked down .22 magnum. Last coon I removed from the community in a live catch trap nearly bit me, so the next one was removed using the .17 magnum. Awesome firepower to say the least! It might even do in a grizzly if the hunter could make 101% certain to hit him in the eyeball the first shot!
 
Meek - I believe you are referring to the .17 HMR (Hornady Rimfire Magnum), which many affectionately refer to as the "Hummer."
 
Depending on where you are, you are guilty of an offense. Raccoons are considered game animals most places and hunting or shooting them is only allowed in season. As is hunting with a toy BB gun. A wild animal doing what it does naturally is not a nuisance animal. No matter what you think about how you paid for the property and it's yours and no critter is gonna help itself to it, you're wrong. You're hunting out of season and harassing a game animal for no reason, period. I just hope the Anti-hunting bunch doesn't get a hold of this. You are exactly what they point to when they say hunters are all crazed killers.

Water is a magnet for coons. They wash everything they eat. Including sugar cubes. Yeah, it does and they never figure out where the cube goes. You're providing a place for them to do this and baiting it with fish. What did you expect? If you don't want coons in the yard, get rid of the pond.
In any case, you can shoot at 'em all you want, but you will never get rid of them. You provide water, food and a nice place for them to live another will be along.
