Thanks to Oleg Volk and the moderators for making this great site a reality. To Steve Smith for moderating this and other THR forums and for his always excellent high-power match advice, and to all of you for making this a fun set of shooting matches.

We started out the year with the pistol most recommended for first-time shooters -- the .38/.357 wheelgun.

We'll finish the year with the rifle most recommended for first-time shooters -- the .22 long rifle.

Improved -- Any improvements in trigger, barrel, sights etc. or a spendy, competitive .22 rifle.

Ready on the Right! Ready on the Left! Ready on the Firing Line!

P.S. I'm looking for volunteers to run this for 2004 and continue to improve on what we've started. I think El Rojo has mentioned interest, anyone care to give him a hand?

I have a few ideas for potential matches. I'd be willing to help where I can.

Looks like I'm going to have to skip this one (and any others that are outdoors).
Once the temp is mid 40s or lower my hands freeze up (even with gloves).
The meds I'm taking screws up the circulation in my hands and feet.
See you in the spring (unless there are some indoor matches).

Outlander -- How 'bout you (and anyone else who can't shoot outside) use a copier to shrink the target to 50% and shoot at 25 yards? If your range is more or less than 25 yards, just shrink accordingly.

Maybe someone here can post a shrunken target or can point out an official target that's the right size.

This is all for fun, so I don't want to lose any competitors to weather.;)

I don't think this is going to work, but I am going to do it anyway. I am going to shoot my scoped Volquartsen 10/22 as improved class. I will shoot my Winchester tube fed stock .22 in the scoped class. I was going to say that you could either accept that or say no and then I will just take my 10/22 score or you might allow me two entries in one class since they are two different guns. The reason I say "was" is because I just looked and my Winchester has disappeared. I think it is out at my parents and it no longer has its scope on it anyway. Therefore, this is merely a hypothetical and I will just shoot my Garand and claim that I had it converted from a long barrel CCW gun to a super-duper velocity .22 that goes so fast that the hole in the paper looks like they are .308 caliber. :D I find my Garand can be applied to all of the THR shoots if described properly.

(an aside) How did I get up to 600 posts all of the sudden? Wow! That made me go look at how many I had at TFL. Even more Wow! I didn't realize I had 2068 posts over there! Thanks to Oleg for keeping the dream alive. I wonder how Rich is doing?

:banghead: Our range, and the road leading to it, are covered with about 14 inches of heavy snow. I can't get to it, and more snow is forecasted. Hopefully, we'll get a thaw before yearend.:barf:

Robert -- My range in Minnesota is covered in snow from November to April, so we tromp out to the targets in these:

We are lucky enough to have members who put in their volunteer time plowing the road to the range.

You may notice I don't run many prone matches during the 6-month Minnesota "winter".

:D

I went out to my range today. It is kinda late, so I got set-up and only can shoot a string, 2 sighter, and 10 for score - just before I had to leave.

I thought that I would do better.. I guess not . :banghead: I'll need to try again. Is this ok? The good news is that most of the shot land on the same general area - 6 o'clock low.

PB you can try again all you want, but I am afraid that score stands. Welcome to the THR Virtual Match, where you always want a second chance, but can't take it. My score of zero two months ago on the one shot match was a good testament to the "you only get one chance" thing. Shoot it again if you want, but I am afraid that score will probably have to stand. Feel good though that you are an honest guy and that is not an easy thing. Trust me after a few dismal THR performances, I know.

That is why when I shoot a bad match, I like to invent my own new class. For instance. During the poker match, I just missed getting a perfect score, but like an 1/8 of an inch. So I decided that my Garand was a long barreled pistol and attempted to submit a perfect score I shot with my Garand at 10 yards. ROTR almost bought it. Well no actually he didn't, but I have convinced myself that he almost bought it. :D I was rewarded for my effort by having ROTR include in a later shoot the "El Rojo" Class. You had to shoot the target one handed with a Garand. That honor was worth missing that perfect score.

Stay with it, some months are better than others.

El Rojo,

Thanks for encouragement. I'll slap my scope back on and shoot at an improve class.

However, I don't think I'll get that much of a better score. It is good though, since I have an execuse to go out and shoot more.

 One hand on a Garand, how do you do that... :D

This won't be my last one, for sure. I am looking forward to participate in future matches.

pbhome71 - YES! This is exactly the point of these matches. I have been motivated to pull some guns out of the safe that I haven't shot for a long time just for these matches. Sometimes that is all you need - an excuse to use a diffent gun that overcomes the resistance caused by the need to clean it.

I suspect some people who shoot these matches never submit their scores. Some only submit when they have good targets. I respect those that submit all of them, good and bad. It's all for fun anyway.

Maybe someone here can post a shrunken target or can point out an official target that's the right size.

For the 50-foot indoor "gallery" ranges, the A-17 is the official target for smallbore. You lose the X-ring, though. "Pinwheel" hits that obliterate the entire 10-ring are sometimes counted as Xs.

I tried to shoot this match on Saturday the 13th. Spent more'n a few rounds getting the scope on the Nylon 66 dialed in right after its 12-year layoff. :uhoh: First thing I noticed was... I SUCK OFFHAND WITH A RIFLE. There, I said it. Couldn't steady up on the target. Tried to shoot when the crosshairs passed over the center, but with that trigger, who knows.
Walked down to the target... hmmm 8 holes. And not all of them in the rings.
Tried it again, slower... 7 holes, not all in rings :banghead: (Didn't even add this score up)
Most holes of both sets were low.
Tried sighting again from the bench... yep... scope lost zero.:cuss:
By then I was out of ammo

No way I'm gonna admit to a 56/0X.. nope, not gonna do it :D

Ahh... what the heck....

I had to go to the range to do my CCW refresher. Since the range fees were paid for the day I went ahead and shot the match.

El Rojo
78-0X
Scoped no sling

I wanted to sight in the FAB-10 afterwards and as I was shooting the match, ground squirrels are running around in the new grass out by the 175 yard line!!! That got me excited enough it was hard to finish the match without blowing it. The FAB-10 got sighted in and it drew its first blood shortly thereafter. That .223 is a pretty straight shooting bullet. I got three hits at about 180-200 yards and a couple closer ones. An overall good range day.

cross wind?
solar eclipse?
earth quake?
I really suck with a rifle?.:banghead:

After I shot my shots, I grabbed my SIG 226 and shot the same target about as well as I did with the rifles.

OK, got out to the range today and I'm surprised at how well I did on this months match. I'm not much of a rifleman so I had low expectations. I started with a few groups on a standard target to get my 10/22 sighted in. I shot from rest and I was really disapointed in the groups I was getting. A few tweeks to the scope and things looked generally acceptable but I still had crummy groups considering this was from rest and did not bode well for my outlook on shooting offhand.

Well, I was actually surprised that my offhand shooting was as good as, or better than what I got from rest. I still need a lot of work but I'm happy enought with these results this month.

Offhand ... If the good lord wanted me to shoot offhand he wouldn't have made benchrests and bi-pods and trees! (oh my).
I have to start practicing a lot ... I don't sway ... I ROCK.
I couldnt believe how much I was rocking back and forth.
Finally settled down a bit and ran out this months target ... oh well :(
