â€GO THE DISTANCEâ€

or â€If you shoot it, they will continueâ€

This month’s match will determine if there will be matches in the future. The participation in the matches has waned significantly and the number of entries in this months match will tell us if it is worthwhile to continue. So, if you want to see the matches continue you are urged to get out and shoot (and post) this month.

This month I will try to address some of the issues expressed with past matches. We will return to our ‘roots’ a bit and hopefully more people will be able to play.

PROCEEDURE:

For this months match YOU will determine the distances to be used. The target will be used at several distances of your choosing. Your score will be the farthest distance successfully completed.

a) Place target at your chosen starting distance
b) Fire 3 (three) rounds
c) If all 3 rounds are within the black, or break the black you have successfully completed that distance and may record the value.
d) Move the target to a new position at least 1 yard further downrange. [You may not go backwards, but the next distance is up to you.]
e) Repeat steps b and c. IF ANY SHOT MISSES THE BLACK YOU ARE DONE!
f) Repeat this procedure until you finally miss the center black of the target.

SCORING: The score you report is the FURTHEST distance target that DID NOT HAVE A MISS. Report this distance in YARDS. [For fun you can also report the distances you chose to start at and how many distances you did successfully]

Note: If you miss on the first distance your score is ZERO. You are not permitted to try again in that class.

[ISSUES ADDRESSED: “My range only allows specific distances that are not the same as the match specified rangeâ€]

TARGET: This months target will be a basic NRA bullseye style target. The target is available here. http://dotclue.org/targets/a23-8.5x11.pdf

Or, you can buy a 50 yard smallbore rifle target (A-23) and use that.

Or, you may make your own target by drawing a black circle 3- 7/8†across. {How’s that for flexability!}

You may use the same target for each distance in each class entry. Remember, once you miss you are done for that class entry.

[ISSUES ADDRESSED: “I like bullseye targetsâ€, “My range only allows bullseye targetsâ€, “I can’t download the targetâ€,â€I don’t have a printerâ€]

Firearms/Classes:

Any handgun or Rifle may be used this month. All classes are to shot unsupported , one or two hand grip, (freehand) except for the last class listed. Use of rifle slings is allowed.

Classes:

HANDGUN-Standard Rimfire: Any .22LR rimfire handgun with iron sights without any major performance improvements.

HANDGUN-Standard Centerfire: Any caliber center fire handgun with iron sights without any major performance improvements.

HANDGUN-Open Rimfire: .22lr handguns with major improvements, optics, etc.

HANGUN- Open Centerfire : Centerfire handguns with major improvements, optics, etc.

RIFLE-Standard Rimfire: Any .22LR rimfire handgun with iron sights without any major performance improvements.

RIFLE-Standard Centerfire: Any caliber center fire handgun with iron sights without any major performance improvements.

RIFLE-Open Rimfire: .22lr handguns with major improvements, optics, etc.

RIFLE- Open Centerfire : Centerfire handguns with major improvements, optics, etc.

OPEN- anything not listed above. If you want to try shotguns go ahead, but I’d suggest slugs – even then you might want to think twice about that.

RIFLE SUPPORTED/BENCH – Any caliber rifle used in a supported or bench rest mode. With or without Optics.

[ISSUES ADDRESSED: “I don’t own the guns you specifiedâ€, “Too limitedâ€, â€Not enough choicesâ€]

Entries:
Shooter may enter as many classes as they want. One entry for each class. That’s right, if you have enough weaponry, ammo, and time you can have up to 10 entries this month.

[ISSUES ADDRESSED: “Too few optionsâ€, “Why can’t I shoot my entire arsenal and enter the match†El Rojo – this is for you if you are still out there!]

Please post your scores here on this thread (I'm going back to the single thread contest posting for this month.)with the following information:

THR Member Name –
Last Successful Distance _____
Class --

Caliber –

OK – get out there and shoot the match! I hope you enjoy the freedom provided in this months match. Remember, if very few people shoot this match (and post their results) we may decide these matches are not worth the effort. There may be no matches after this one. It is all UP TO YOU!

The High Road Virtual Match Rules and F

The High Road Virtual Match Rules and FAQ

What is it?

THR Virtual Match is a monthly shooting competition held in cyberspace and hosted on THR forums. Volunteers who enjoy the shooting sports and want to share a challenging, enjoyable, good-natured competition with like-minded souls run the matches for the fun of the THR members.

MISSION:
Provide a fun and challenging shooting competition
Encourage the safe use of firearms by responsible THR members
Encourage members to try shooting methods, type, or styles that may be new to them.

Who can play?

Any THR member in good standing can participate in a match any month.

Who runs the matches?

A designated match coordinator will define the specifics of the task and scoring for each months match.

What is defined in each months match?

The details of each match will change but the information provided will include:
1) An official target (often downloadable from this site or a link to another site with free targets)
2) Definitions of the course of fire, the distance to the target, the type of firearms that are to be used
3) the method of firing and/or holds/supports allowed
4) the number of rounds
5) the method of scoring
6) a definition of classes

How do I enter?

1) If you are not a member of THR then you must register on the site first.
2) Read and understand these rules/faq and the specific monthly instructions. Download the target for the month and print it out.
3) Bring the target , and your guns to your local range
4) Shoot the match as described.
5) Score your target yourself. (You are on your honor to do this correctly)
6) Submit your name, score, class and other info to the THR match coordinator by private message or posting on the match thread.
7) Scanning or photographing your target and posting it is encouraged but is not required.
8) Wait until the end of the month to see how you did against the other THR members.
9) Repeat next month or as often as you like during the year.

What is the cut-off date for match entries?

Unless otherwise specified the final date for each months contest will be the last day of that month.

The Basic Rules:
-Treat all guns as if they were always loaded
-Never let the muzzle cover anything that you are not willing to destroy
-Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target
-Be sure of your target and what’s behind it
-SAFELY follow the course of fire described for each month’s match
-Only shoot where it is safe and legal to do so
-Ammo – Feel free to use any ammunition you like, as long as it is safe. The bottom line is to SHOOT SAFELY.

HONOR CODE: Remember: “Character means Doing the Right Thing Even When Nobody's Looking.†Print out only ONE target per shooter per class per month. Shoot your course of fire and report your score.

Can I practice before shooting the match?

Unless otherwise specified in the monthly match directions, you may take some practice shots before shooting the match target. However, you should not use a copy of the match target for practice shots. This eliminates the temptation to pick the best score or get confused on which target was the ‘record’ target when you get back from the range.

Some monthly matches may specify that the match target be shot without practice, “cold and on demandâ€, etc. in order to simulate a hunting or other real world situation.

How many targets can I print out and take to the range?
Only print out the number of targets appropriate for entry each month. There should be no “redo’s†. What you shoot on the match target is your final score.

What are “classesâ€

In order to make the competition fair the entries are segregated into classes. A class may be defined as a type of firearm (rifle, pistol, etc) and/or a caliber (.22 rimfire, centerfire, etc.) and/or the type of sighting system (iron sights, scoped, etc.) . Obviously it would not be fair to have someone shooting a scoped rifle against a handgun in direct competition. Classes are design to provide a general leveling of the playing field. Classes also allow for multiple entries by a single shooter each month. The match coordinator will define the number and type of classes available per shooter.
What if I don’t understand the rules or have a question?

Feel free to post any questions regarding the match in the tread designated for that month. The match coordinator will be able to answer you question and clarify the rules if needed.

What if I don’t agree with something in the match?

You are free to post objections or comments (in a polite and civil way) in the thread designated for that month. The match coordinator has the authority to decide all matters of policy regarding the match methods, scoring, etc. and has the final word. You are free to disagree but the match coordinators word stands.

I'm glad you decided to go ahead with this month's match, photo_guy. Beetle and I find your matches fun and well thought out. We'll be sure to participate.

Thanks again. :)

My scores

I decided to give this months match a try relatively early in the month. This should give everyone a base score to beat. I did OK with my .22 but really messed up the centerfire class - first shot was neaelr dead center at 15 yards but I must have flinched on the next shot because it was a clean miss! Since it was the first distance that is scored as a ZERO :cuss:

I might get back out later to try some rifle classes.

I don't mean to be difficult, I'm just trying to understand;....

I ASSUME that if you hit any of the black on the target with
each shot, you may continue....is that correct?

I'll be going out to the range this weekend....hopefully I'll be able to submit targets in the following classes:

HANDGUN-Standard Rimfire

HANDGUN-Standard Centerfire

RIFLE-Open Rimfire

RIFLE-Standard Centerfire

RIFLE- Open Centerfire

RIFLE SUPPORTED/BENCH

Should be fun. This will be my first virtual match........I certainly hope it isn't the last.

2speed,
If all three shots are inside or touch the black area that makes up the center target (3- 7/8†circle) then you may count that as a completed distance and move on.
If any one of those three does not fall within the black area or touching the black then you must stop and record the last target distance that you completed successfully.

Note: just for clarification - the thin black rings outside the center area do not count as "black".

Len_in_Phoenix, Welcome! I hope you enjoy it!

OK, I shot the match today. I did poorly with the rifles, so I need to work more on those. I did poorly with one pistol, too.

Also, the targets I printed out were not the same as the ones linked to in this thread. My targets had a black donut instead of a black circle. The donut is 6.25" in diameter with a 3.5" white area in the center. I figured the white area on my target is close enough in size to the black area on the linked target, so I went with it.

My scores:

name: Fly320s
best dist: 50 yards
class: Rifle- std centerfire
weapon: Bushy XM15E2S (16 inch AR15)
caliber: .223

name: Fly320s
best dist: 0 - no score (missed high on the first shot)
class: Rifle- open rimfire
weapon: Ruger 10/22
caliber: .22LR

name: Fly320s
best dist: 50 yards
class: Rifle- open centerfire
weapon: Bushy lower, RRA 9mm 16 inch upper
caliber: 9mm

name: Fly320s
best dist: 20 feet (shot high on the second string)
class: Handgun - std rimfire
weapon: Ruger Single Six
caliber: .22LR

name: Fly320s
best dist: approx 30 yards (paced off, not measured)
class: Handgun - std centerfire
weapon: Kimber Pro Carry
caliber: .40SW

Fly320s, glad you could enter the match. Looks like you did OK.

Your 3.5" target is a bit smaller than the 'official' size. That means that you were scoring to a harder standard than specified. That is better that the reverse, I guess.

Measuring the distances accurately can be a bit of a problem. I only ask that you do they best you can. At the range I use they have a nice, motorized system that can place targets at any distance but it is only marked at specific points. Determining the actual distance requires some estimation.

Hope you particapate again next month!

Well -
I gotta go to the pistol range tomorrow to test some new handloads...............hopefully I'll be able to try my hand with one of my hand toys afterward. :D

Well, I learned several things today:

1 - If you're shooting in a gusty crosswind, shoot the virtual match at the END of the day instead of the beginning. Once I got the wind figured out I did fine......of course that was after I flubbed the match. :fire:

2 - Don't try to save time by setting the target farther out.

3 - Don't volunteer to be an RO in the morning and then shoot in the afternoon. Morning: low 80's with no wind. Afternoon: 105 with 13mph winds gusting to 20+mph.

In case y'all haven't figured it out, I'm a trapshooter......I have an excuse for everything. :D

Ok....enough whining. Here are my official scores:

HANDGUN-Standard Centerfire - A big fat ZERO - Shanked the very first shot low and left at 15 yards with my Kimber.

RIFLE-Standard Centerfire - Another big fat ZERO - The AR-15 was wagging around so much I looked like I was rowing a canoe instead of shooting.

RIFLE SUPPORTED/BENCH - 200 yards. Shot a real nice sub-2 inch group at 300..............in the white at 3 o'clock.

So there I am.....one marginal score out of 3 attempts.

I guess I'll just have to practice more.
 :D

As promised, Beetle and I shot the match today. We shot a few classes this weekend, and we'll prolly shoot a few more next weekend. FYI, our range has fixed distances of 50 ft., 25 yds., 50 yds., and 100 yds. Here are our scores:

THR Member Name: BamBam-31
Last Successful Distance: 50 yds.
Class: Handgun Open Rimfire
Weapon: Ruger 22/45 w/ Ultradot
Caliber: .22lr

This one was almost 50 ft., as I BARELY grazed the black at 25 yds. w/ one of my shots. Whew! The 50 yd. shooting was your typical "blind squirrel getting a nut" kind of shooting.

THR Member Name: BamBam-31
Last Successful Distance: 25 yds.
Class: Handgun Standard Centerfire
Weapon: S&W 686P 6" barrel
Caliber: .357

I came within an inch of hitting the target three times at 50 yds. My first shot touched the outer white ring at 9:00, then the next two were 5:00 in the 9-ring. Aaaarrrgg!!

THR Member Name: BamBam-31
Last Successful Distance: 100 yds.
Class: Benchrest Rifle
Weapon: Ruger 10/22 w/ Bushnell Scopechief
Caliber: .22lr

THR Member Name: Beetle Bailey
Last Successful Distance: 50 yds.
Class: Benchrest Rifle
Weapon: Finn M39, irons
Caliber: 7.62x54R

Beetle asked me to post his scores for him (computer problems). His 50 yd. group was a three shot clover leaf. Awesome. IIRC, he attempted the 100 yd. shots and made two, but he had one flier in the white.

THR Member Name: Beetle Bailey
Last Successful Distance: 50 yds.
Class: Benchrest Rifle
Weapon: CZ 452 Lux, irons
Caliber: .22lr

Same as the M39, he attempted the 100 yd. shots and had two good hits, followed by a rushed third shot that ended up a flier in the white. He rushed it in an attempt to take advantage of a momentary calm in windage.

THR Member Name: Beetle Bailey
Last Successful Distance: 50 ft.
Class: Handgun Standard Rimfire
Weapon: CZ 75 Compact w/ Kadet kit
Caliber: .22lr

Well, there you have it. We'll get some more in next weekend, eh?

Come on, people! Go shoot this month's match!! :D

I'm glad to see some of you have been getting out and shooting the match (and posting).

I think I will be putting together the July match as I haven't heard anyone else who wants to do it. I think El Rojo is still busy. Perhaps ROTR wants another go at it?

Regarding the match deadline, because of my schedule and the upcoming Holiday (4th of July) I plan to extend the deadline for the June match to July 5th. That gives everyone a few more weekends to get out and shoot the match! But don't put it off for the last minute.

I haven't been able to get the target to open so I can print a few out.
Anyone else having problems with it?

Walmart didn't have any A-23s when my wife and son went there last night either.

Where did that compass get to, I wonder? If I can find it I guess I can make some of my own targets.

I gave it a try last Friday. Unfortunately our range only allows to place targets at 25m for pistols and 50m for rifles. No American style targets available, so I used German targets with a 10cm (3.94in) black.

THR member name: T.Stahl
Class: Rifle Supported/Bench
Gun: Enfield No.4, .303British
Range: 50m/54.7yds - FAILED

THR member name: T.Stahl
Class: Handgun Standard Centerfire
Gun: Glock 17L, 9x19
Range: 25m/27.3yds - FAILED

I tried both classes immediately afterwards with my brother's Swedish Mauser m/96 and HK USP Expert 9mm. Would have passed then, but no two guns in the same class allowed. :(

Greatest Hits!

ROTR - quite a few people have requested that some of your old matches be run again. (i.e the playing card and tiger matches, specifically). I suggest a ROTR Virtual match "greatest hits". Should be easier on you and fun for everyone.

THR member name: jamz
Last Successful Distance: none! (Failed on 50 yard range)
Class: Rifle,open rimfire (optics)
Weapon: Ruger 77/22
Caliber: .22

One round went astray. :p

THR member name: jamz
Last Successful Distance: 35 feet
Class: handgun-Standard Centerfire
Weapon: SW1911
Caliber: .45

Lost it at the 25 yard stand. My gun shoots high! <--jamz blames it on the gun

I'll try for the supported class in a few days.

Guys, guys, guys.....Everyone is falling into the same trap as I did this month.
Hint: If it is possible at your range shoot your first target REALLY CLOSE! Then move out from there. That way you won't be getting so many zeros because you get "cocky" and start too far.

Any suggestions for a July match?

How about a "Lord Roberts" match (aka "Mad Minute").

Procedure (for rifles):
a) Place a 24" target at 300yds or use a different target at a different range that will give the same relation (like 11.1cm @ 100m).
b) Prepare stripper clips/mags and load gun.
c) Shoot for one minute.
d) Count the hits.

Could be shot in different classes (bolt/semi, supported/unsupported).

For pistols the target size would need to be adjusted, something like 20cm @ 25m or 8" @ 25yds.
