Some 300s, lotta 7mm's, .30-06 and .308 and a couple .270s (this is the Northwest, after all). Wanna get back to the Midwest (MI/WI) for deer season again, where I expect to see a few .30-30s and quite a few more .270s!

Pistol caliber lever guns seem to be hot this year, mainly 357 mag. With the right bullet a perfectly suitable rifle for Northeast woods hunting. Just surprised when over the last decade it's been "bigger, faster, hotter" with the younger crowd and "hunting with anything other than a 30-30 is gay and communist" among the old grumpies.

I will hunt mainly with the 6.5x55 Swedish sporter but may have a go with my H&R 444 Marlin loaded with black powder and cast.

Between me, my brother, father, and grandfather the guns that follow us to deer camp are:

Weatherby 30-06 - Grandfather
Savage 99 in 300 Sav - Brother
Rossi 92 in 357 Mag - Myself
Recurve Bow: Father

I usually take along my Winchester 94 30-30 as a backup rifle and this year I've even taken out my M1 Garand a few times. I ran into a guy at the Walmart ammo section who is using a Marlin 44 mag. I think people are beginning to appreciate the light handy package leverguns are.

Most "deer camps" for me are on National Forest land. We hunt mostly mule deer and elk, with the occaisonal black bear or cougar thrown in.

I use a Savage 111 in 270 win. Some of my friends give me grief about it because it's "boring," or "a gun you give to your wife." I don't quite understand what they are talking about, especially considering I never have to track my game.

One friend swears by his 257 roberts, or anything in 25 caliber.
Another friend uses a .260 remington for deer and a 300 win mag for elk.
Another guy at work really likes anything so long as it's an Ackley Improved

I don't pay too much attention to the rifle brands, but it seems like most f the guns my friends use are remingtons.

^ Sounds like some cool guys there.

The guys that are big fans of the quarter bore are die hard fans.
.260 for deer and .300 for elk are excellent choices.
AIs are also freakin awesome, if you handload. I wouldn't want to feed one if I didn't. Man that crap is expensive.
Oh, and your choice is hard to beat as well.

That's the beauty of it. Nobody is wrong. :)

this year I brought out my :
AR in 25WSSM (shot 6 pointer)
Savage 16 in 7mm-08
Rem 141 in 32rem rimless
Ruger Deerfield 44mag

a friend brought:
Win Mod 70 in 308win ( shot buck with busted off rack )
and a ?...? in 270win

Where I hunted, the main group included guys with:
1 Marlin .30-30
1 Remington pump action .30-06
1 Savage Model 99 .308
1 Savage bolt action .300 Win Mag
And I brought along a Winchester Model 88 .308 and a Marlin .444 that each got a deer.
The guy that uses a .257 Weatherby couldn't make it this year due to a leg injury.

I hunt primarily with family. All these guys including myself reload and we're all fascinated with obscure less common cartridges. That said, we also each have enough bolt guns to bring something different for every weekend of the season if we really wanted. Here's a sampling of what we generally bring throughout the course of our 9-10 week regular rifle season:

  • 222 Rem Mag
  • 240 Wby Mag
  • 240 Gibbs

over here we are required to use shotguns,
12 ga sabots, in rifed barrels
a couple of 20 ga sabots ,in riffed barrels
and a couple of 12 ga smooth bores
out of the twenty or so guys who show up
only two of them use scopes

Here in the Republik of IL, at Stan and Jan's Deer Camp and Lodge, the five guns are: 2-Mossberg 500s, one in 20, one in 12. A Rem 870 in 12. A TC Renegade 50. And, lastly, a TC Contender in 357 reamed to 357 Max. Bows from AR, Mission, Bear, Hoyt, and Matthews plus one Barnett horizontal,

My son and I hunted for years, his gun was either a .30-30 Winchester or a Rem. 78 .270. I have a Winchester 70 .25-06, Savage 110 .270, and a Rem. 7 .243. I just acquired a Savage 99 .300 Savage and hope to hunt it some day.

1. Winchester 70 in 30-06.
1. Remington 760 in 30-06(mine0
1. Remington 700 in 300 RUM
1. CZ in .308

Not a lot of guns this year. And we cleaned house.

deer camp guns

30-30, Win 94
257 Roberts, Kimber Montana
260 Rem, Savage 11
300 Savage, Savage 99

This year I used the 1958 Win.model 70 in .243 to take 2 adult doe and a 6 point buck.

I like my 50 cal Black Knight.
I shoot a sabot 45 jacketed hollow point pistol bullet pushed by 150 grains of Pyrodex R.
As it is all black, it looks like an assault rifle.

Up north in the 'rifle zone', I use my 1903 30-06.

Shiloh Hartford 45-70, T/C Pro Hunter .50 bp, Kimber 84M Limited .308 and Wilson Combat Recon 6.8 SPC. All have Leupold glass (except the Shiloh - midrange Vernier tang). Good shooting.

Elk camp guns
3006 Remington
270 WSM Browning
270 win Winchester
3006 Springfield
3006 Winchester
300 Win Mag Winchester
7mm Rem Mag Remington
7mm mag BAR Browning
3006 semi auto Remington
250 Savage model 99

Our deer camp this year:

2-Ruger M77 MKII 25-06
Model 70 25-06
Model 70 280 Rem
Model 70 243
A-Bolt 300 Win Mag
TC Encore 7mm RM
Howa 25-06
223 AR-15 (don't remember the make)

We hunt on my land and adjoining properties but we do use a cabin as a camp for the guys in town.
30-06 is BY FAR the most often used caliber but it can run the table as far as manufacturer. I rarely see anything but a bolt action. Military types tend to run a 308 and as some get older they start looking for less recoil so 243 is not uncommon. 270 is seen occasionally as are 25-06 and other "long range" rifles.
I generally hunt with a Savage 110 in 30-06 but nobody is surprised if I show up with a Marlin 336 in 30-30, a sporter Swedish Mauser, an AR-15 or any variety of different firearms.

In our camp you will find...

Winchester 100-308
Winchester 94-30-30
Winchester 70- 308
Marlin 336-35 rem
Marlin 375-375 Win
Savage 99-303 Savage
Savage 99c-308
Remington 742-30-06
Stevens 325 bolt-30-30
Mossberg 835-12 ga
Mossberg 500-50 cal black powder bbl
Remington 870 12 ga w/slug bbl

If I could have gotten out to my hunting spot (health problems limit my mobility) I could have used either:

.303 British from a Lee-Enfield No 4 Mk 2

8mm Mauser from a Turkish Mauser

.30-06 from a Remington 700BDL

I use either a 30-30 levergun or a 30-06 bolt action rifle depending upon where in the State I'm hunting. I hunt with 4 friends. One buddy uses a .308 Win and the other shoots a 45-70 levergun. Another a 7mm-08 and a yet another uses a 6.5mm Swede...

So:
30-06
30-30
45-70
7mm-08
6.5mm Swede
.308 Win

This year at our club we had:
Ruger #1s in 270 and 7mm08
Remington Model 7 in 7mm08
Remington Model 700 in 270
Mossberg Bantam youth rifle in 243
AR15s in .223, 6.8, and 300blk

For deer last year :
-Savage 30-06
-Browning A-Bolt in .300WM
-Win 70 in .270

-----------

For hog it's almost all AR's. Same camp we use for deer, but it tends to change it some since you sometimes get follow-up shots on their buddies if you're quick.
