I am home visiting my parents for my University Spring break. My 18 yearold brother came into the kitche where i was puting some dishes away and said "Hi" follwed by pulling a gun on me. :what: It looked like a Glock 19 but turned out to be an airsoft. He held it in one hand with his finger on the trigger.:fire: The slide had been racked and I could see that the hammer was cocked. He had removed the orange front piece for a film he had to make for a school project and hadn't replaced it yet. :banghead: :fire: :cuss:

I am an assistant self defense instructor and knew how to dissarm him so I did. I got the gun out of his hand and put him in enough pain that he was on his knees holding said hand. As soon as i had the airsoft I knew it wasn't a real gun. But this lead to a lecture on gun saftey and the 4 rules.

I made him go get me the orange piece and after the lecture I reafixed it with super glue. I am keeping his airsoft untill he can prove he has respect for all fire arms and can demonstrate that he knows all of the 4 rules by heart.

He is 18 and I am technicaly just his older sister. When my brother went to my dad to try and get his airsoft back my dad asked why i took it. After I made my brother explain My dad said that that sounded fair. but my question to you all is...Did I do the right thing?

I'd say you did pretty good, MedGrl. Personally, if my brother did that to me, I'd have hurt him a bit more....maybe by breaking the airsoft over his head

Nothing wrong with your reaction - I'd say he's lucky you didn't hurt him worse than you did.

Handled quite well...

Got the point accross..Although I also agree with Gator...perhaps finishing the lesson by smashing said "Airosft" over brother's head...

I am not an Airsoft shooter, but I have looked at some models. Without the Blaze Orange pieces/parts, yeah they look too much like the Real Thing. I saw one that was a replica of a Tanfoglio (sp?) 1911-A1. Someone pointing that in my general direction without the Orange part would very likely become a backstop for some REAL .45ACP ammo.

I think you did very well. He needs to realize that his actions could eventually get him shot. Even with that blaze orange little thing on the barrel, he'd get shot. As already stated, these things look too close to the real thing. Somebody draws down on you, the only thing you mind has time to register is "GUN!" Everything goes downhill from there.

There was an article in the local paper last week about the high number of cops who have recently drawn their guns on people running around with airsoft replica guns.

According to the article, Round Rock (30 minutes north of Austin) police have drawn their guns 10 times already this year. They haven't shot anyone yet, but it is probably only a matter of time.

I'd say you did the right thing.

An 18-year old pointing a realistic-looking imitation gun at ANYONE, much less a family member, is a mark of stupidity. Proper instruction and a certain degree of chastisement is in order.

Having said that, let's take another look at the post . . .
It looked like a Glock 19 . . . The slide had been racked and I could see that the hammer was cocked.
 This makes the whole story sound very fishy, since Glocks are striker-fired, and have no hammer. (And if it DID have a hammer you could see, it must not have been pointed directly at you.)
I made him go get me the orange piece and after the lecture I reafixed it with super glue. I am keeping his airsoft . . .
You've just established that taking things from a sibling is OK. He may very well decide that since you took his Airsoft, he's entitled to take $$$ from your purse in sufficient quantity to replace it. (Remember, according to the post he's an IDIOT for pointing a realistic imitation Glock 19 - complete with hammer! - at you.)

You did the right thing, much better than I would have handled it...he would in some serious, life altering pain for some time if that were me in your shoes. :banghead:

my friend point a bow and arrow at me once, with it pulled back ready to loose the arrow, lets say he no longer had a bow an arrow or comferable living for a few days nor my friendship.

You went easy on him IMO, my brother would have had several air softs, or several air soft pieces at least.

A lesson he won't forget

Even though my sons have had all the rules DRILLED into then, and are paranoid about safe gun handling, I hadda do something similar to youngest a few years ago.

One of his buddies had brought over a BB pistol, and he came down the stairs, as I was walking by. He pointed the gun at me(finger off trigger), and I immediately grabbed it, twisting it outa his hands. (If he'd had his finger in the trigger guard, I probably woulda broke his finger). He started stammering something about "its only a BB gun" and "Its not loaded"...He got ripped a new one--A gun is a gun is a gun.

The same kid that had the BB gun, also had paintball stuff...For a while someone (not hard to guess in this case) was doing "drive by" paintball shootings of some of the houses in the neighorhood. Don't know if my kid was around when they did this or not. But, I showed him the barrel of a shotgun, and told him that if I saw someone pointing something that looks like that out a car window at me, I'd definitely return fire, and so would most cops. The drive by "shootings" stopped about then.

wish there were more....

older siblings who were mature enough and cared enough to "educate" their little brothers.

My older brother beat the snot out of me for joy riding in mom and dad's car with my friends once.

I was shocked that he didn't find it amusing.....but figured out pretty quickly that in his opinion the car was not a toy for 13 year olds to play with.

You may well have just taught your brother a lesson that saves his life.

Think of it as a lesson he needs to learn, with a little pain reinforcement. First, never underestimate an opponent, even a female. :D Second, never pull it or point it unless you're going to use it. Third, some jokes can get you hurt. Fourth, big sis can still kick his a$$.

Sounds good to me.

My mother in law once drew down on some kids with airsoft-like guns once.
My father in law was working somewhere distant, and she was heading out to visit him. She stopped at a gas station to get some soda and some gas. When she came out, she saw 2 kids hanging around her car. They turned around and sweeped her with the muzzle of their gun. She instinctively grabbed hers from her purse and drew down on them.

The way she tells the story, they both ruined their shorts.

Removed because I am in a foul mood, and what I posted has no real point.

One question though....

Since it looked like a Glock 19 how could you tell the hammer was cocked, since they don't have one?

I just looked at it again and it says "FirePower Thunder 6mm Air GUn" I guess it isn't modled after a Glock..just a generic "auto loader" as poeple think of them. It has a hammer that you can see so...I don't know what kind it is supposed to mimmick other than generic semi-auto pistol. Sorry about the miss lableing of the airsoft.

and to those who have been advising me to hide my purse...I'm a college student...I have no money :D

Of course you did the right thing. All though I would watch your purse as someone else stated. If he had done that to me, I'd give him a good beat down as a lesson.

If an 18 year old complains to his father that his big sissy took his gun, and he wants it back, then there are other problems at stake! :D

Should have broken his wrist for good measure. tough love and all.

If he had tried that on a cop or heaven forbid some hapless CCW license holder he'd be swiss cheese.

Good job. I took a dart gun from my 5-yr.-old yesterday for pointing it at his sister. :)
