Do you ever leave your guns in the car?

I have a .357 Stainless Blackhawk tucked underneath the driver's seat.

When I think of the bad things that can happen with it being there, compared to the bad things that can happen with it not being there, it is a a tradeoff I with which I can live.

If it's stolen, someone else may die.

Breaking into cars is very easy, and even alarms are just so common everyone assumes it's another false alarm.

People break into cars to get things of value- guns are of value to a criminal.
I agree that we don't need more gun laws, because criminals can always get guns illegally, and an unsecured gun "hidden" in your car is one of those ways.

A way to avoid this is to carry it, or lock it up in a quick access car safe when not carrying.

Anyway, that's just my two cents worth of advice on the topic.

A stainless 9MM S&W lives in my truck just about full-time. When unattended in public it is cable locked to the seat frame behind the seat and the mag goes with me. Just my wife and me in the house and she never drives my truck.

I bought one of those small thin safes that attach to your car seat via a cable. It's pretty secure and I've really tried to pull it out without any success. The only way would be with bolt cutters. I keep a beat up Glock 21 and some spare mags in that safe. It may look like crap, but it shoots great!!! ;)

I only leave a gun in the car when I am out with my wife and we want to stop at a restaurant that serves liquor. This is just another stupid law we have to face. No restaurant carry if booze are served even if you don't indulge.

This is one that should be changed but it keeps getting shot down by legislation.

I am not a big fan of leaving a gun in my truck. So, unless I have to disarm to enter a building where carrying is verboten, I never leave one.

In those rare occaisions where I have to disarm, I lock my gun inside a lockable steel box bolted to the floor of my truck. It is hardly noticeable, as it is in the extended part of the cab, and I cover it with a rug.

Not sure how it works in your neck of the woods..here in Texas we have the 51% Rule which states if an establishment derives 51% or more of it's revenue from the sale of alcohol, you can't carry!

Do they expect us to go through the receipts and calculate sales?!

That's 51% consumed on premises.
In other words you can carry into a liquor store that makes all it's revenue on the sale of alcohol.

Just look for the 51% sign that will be displayed just like the 30.06 sign.

Appreciate the clarification...big difference! RE: 30.06..yea, very few post the legal notice in it's entirety, rather opting for the "crossed out gun." Which, of course, doesn't hold water if it came down to it.

I almost created another tight spot. I went to the gym to work out this morning and left my pistol in the glove box. I forgot to take it out when I got home and my son asked to borrow the car (he's 20). If he'd been pulled over and asked to show registration it might have been an uncomfortable situation. I did retrieve my gun before giving him the keys though.

Yes the only sign a CHL carrier needs to be concerned with is the correctly posted 30.06 sign.
I don't drink so I have never seen the 51% sign.

BTW, A good friend just renewed his instructor's license.
One new change for anyone with a CHL that does have a couple drinks and drives.
Now, the failing alcohol level that will get your CHL license revoked is ANY alcohol level at all. NOT over the legal DUI limit, but now if the needle moves AT ALL, so long CHL.
So take note, you guys that might like to have a drink or two when eating out. Have the wife drive home and you ride shotgun.:)

I do when not permited to carry in the building. Here in Georgia it's illegal in places that serve alcohol for consumption, so that rules out a good deal of resturants. I have a 17 round mag, but only put 16 in it. The chambered round is inserted back into the magazine and the magazine goes in my pocket. It's a Taurus, so the secruity system is engaged. It can be stolen, but at least the theif won't be able to immediately use it.

I thought about getting a hi point 9mm pistol to leave in the car at all times. Hide/lock the gun in one location and the magazine in another. It would be there incase something were to happen to the carry peice. If it's stolen, I haven't lost a more expensive firearm.

only when I have drill, something about personal firearms offlimits in gov. buildings, so I leave my 1911 in the console, its kind of funny, I have to leave my .45 in my car, but I go inside and draw my SAW, I'm always armed  I just don't like leaving the pistol in my car, too bad I just can't store it in my wall locker or something.

My good friend and his wife work for Chrysler.
Different shifts.
Long drive alone late at night.
Both leave their Glock 19s in their cars, in the company parking lot, against company rules.
A few weeks ago my friend was involved in a shooting on the road on the way home.

Before this he was a little concerned about the gun being left in the car and on company property.

Now he freely states where the company can shove their anti gun rules.:D

I try real hard not to. I've left it in the car for an hour or so while at work. I left it in the car once when I got home (I am the only person in my house who is pro-gun, so I don't usually feel like dealing with the BS and sometimes I leave the gun behind). And I leave it when I go someplace where concealed isn't allowed. Man, that sounds like a lot! It isn't, though.

VeryVery rarely. IF i have to, I usually take the slide and the mag with me. The receiver(with the serial number) is the gun part. the slide is just a piece of machined steel. I had a little steel lock box welded up that would fit inside the console of the S 10 and tahoe i used to drive. but now I carry everywhere and make sure that if i have to go to the sheriffs office or a city hall for permits or other wise, i only carry the slide. With a Beretta it is a3 second job, with a 1911 only a fwe more seconds.

Here's a relevant thread to the topic at hand by Snowdog:

Unlike a lot of sympathy seeking "my guns were stolen" posts I've read over the years, he actually thinks past his own inconvenience, and looks instead to the potential victims of his now criminally owned gun.

There are many kinds of handgun lockboxes for cars to choose from out there, and some links even posted on this very thread.

Please think twice and either secure or carry your gun.

Let's stop giving criminals the easy opportunity to score the free gun "hidden" in the glove box or under the seat, protected by thin window glass and a "false" alarm that nobody will look twice at these days.

Do any of you guys long-gun carry in a vehicle? Is this recommended or safe? I occasionally do when driving to relatives a ways away, but have always wondered if anyone else does this. Typical long gun carry for me is a yugo sks or hipoint 996 9mm carbine.
