Do you ever leave your guns in the car when at home? Besides the risk of theft have you ever considered that some family member might borrow the car and not be aware that they are there?

I had a situation where I left a shotgun in my vehicle after a day of hunting and my son borrowed my car to get to school the next morning because his had broken down. He didn't think it would be a big deal because he knew I had the day off of work.

But if a school official would have happened to check his car for whatever reason my boy would have been expelled.

Anyone else have anything similar happen like this.

Gun In Car

Back in the '60's I did some undercover work for the Corpus Christi P.D. A subject they were interested in left a .38 under the passenger seat of my car. We made a couple of stops that night.. he must have placed it there, not telling me, and forgot about it.

Being the family car, I always checked it out before heading home..found it at a car wash that night and reurned it to the guy.

Good topic..could happen to anyone.

Take Care

The only time I leave my gun in my vehicle if my old lady isnt at least in there is if I go into a store which is maybe twice a week and its only for a few minutes and it is very well hidden. I also have tinted windows are and a nasty alarm. This will all change anyday now as my CCW license will arrive!

I use to leave my gun in my vehicle, that is until my wife started borrowing it and picking up the kids with it..Also one day at work I caught a guy trying to look in my car and that was the last straw. Now it never leaves my side...

If I have to leave mine in the car I lock in in the trunk. The trunk release in the cabin can be locked and the fold down seats are always locked. Yeah someone could still get in, but they'd have to go to a lot of trouble and take a lot of time to do it. The inside of the car is clean and boring so potential thieves won't see anything they want anyway.

glove box??

I don't know if it's all new vehicles, or just the cheap economy models that I can afford to buy...but my last two cars did not have a locking glove box!!

Having a locked compartment to stow my piece in would be a pre-req. for me, before I left it in the car unattended.

But I'm probably way more conservative than the average bear!

Been known to happen.

Nope - my two year old can't reach the pedals, my four year old can't see over the dash, and my wife has her own car. :D

The point, tho is valid - at some juncture along the way, I'm going to have to start paying more attention to this sort of thing.

Good thread.....

Only if I am carrying and...

I have to go into a place that is off limits to CHL that is on the banned list or properly marked. I usually do not support "guns owner, keep out" businesses that ban CHL customers like Bass Pro did when they first opened, since changed.......chris3

Not if I can possibly avoid it.

When I went into work last week, I found out that one of our detectives had his (personal) car broken into overnight and his Glock, badge and a few other important things stolen from the driveway of his home.

I have to park on the street at night and I can only imagine what a tempting target that would be.

I've got a shotgun that stays in the trunk. My car has 25,000 miles on it and I've been in it for every single one of them (not always driving, but in the car). If, in the future, someone else starts driving my car without me, I'll rethink the current set up.

the only time guns are left in my truck is after shooting at the range and i go inside the club to shoot the breeze with other club members, and it is locked.

I do, but I don't like it.

First, I strongly dislike being unarmed. I am a relatively new CCW'er, but have grown accustomed to the weight of a gun on my hip and feel totally exposed without it. My combat folder doesn't help much with that.

Second, I don't like having my guns outside my immediate (as in, on my body) control unless I am at home and they are in the safe.

Third, and most importantly, there's the theft problem. Aside from the fact that it's money down the drain for me, it would really tick me off to know that some crook just got a shiny new gun with which to commit epic naughty. The only thing helping somewhat is that it's in a locked case that is then cable-locked to a non-removable portion of the car. It would dissuade the opportunistic thief, I suppose, but boltcutters would do the job.

The problem is that although I have never seen an outright prohibition in writing, the political climate of my place of employment militates strongly against carrying firearms, and it would be dicey, given that I'd really like not to lose this job, since a) I like it a lot, and b) I paid voluminous sums of money to get the degrees required to do it.

I carry in my car and on my person everywhere. My gun is in a little cubby just below the drivers seat to the left and as I leave the vehicle I can pull it out and insert it into either my shoulder holster or iwb holster un-noticed by the general public. It is totally invisible to anyone even with the door open and them looking that direction. From time to time I have left it there when exiting and locking the car, especially when entering a place legally posted with the 30.06 sign here in Texas.:cuss:

Sometimes, if I really have to.
(Federal Buildings, Post Office, etc)

My solution:

A steel cable wraps around the seat mount pillar.
I throw an old sweatshirt over it, doesn't appear to be anything if you peek in the back windows.

Only when I absolutely must, as when the errands agenda for the day includes the PO or other facility where carry is prohibited by law to non-LEOs.

For many years I had a daily commute to Indy, usually at night as I mostly worked 2nd or 3rd shift. I installed a heavy lockbox behind the front seat of every vehicle I bought, riveted to the wall of the cab or some other inconspicuous location. More secure than the flimsy lockers inside both in construction and restricting casual access. My CCW and spare mags went into it when I got there, and came out for the drive home.

There's a box in my current ride, though it gets less use than formerly. We don't go to concerts, ball games or the like very often but when we do I reluctantly stash the heat and try not to look like food. Uncomfortable, and the main reason it takes major pressure to get me to go.

I always have a S&W snubbie in my vehicle besides usually carrying. Having loaded weapons in vehicles is soemthing everyone can do here although I doubt most even know it. I don't like leaving my carry gun in there but will if I have to.

I ran into an old codger once who kept a crummy old shotgun - non functional - in his car all the time.

He'd been a victim of car theft more than once, and got no satisfaction from the local police . . . so he decided to keep a gun in the car, since he could than report his car " . . . with a gun locked in the trunk . . . " had been stolen.

To paraphrase his own words, " . . . that got them out of the donut shop!"

It was a "turkey" but I kept a Llama Micromax .380 inside my minvan's sun visor!

Had it been of reasonable quality/reliability, I would still be doing so.

I have a .357 Stainless Blackhawk tucked underneath the driver's seat.

When I think of the bad things that can happen with it being there, compared to the bad things that can happen with it not being there, it is a a tradeoff I with which I can live.
