Hello everyone. I started reloading a little less than a year ago, and when I did, I noticed a few things. The first thing I noticed was that friends now expect me to reload all the cartridges they want for cheap. A friend who started reloading before me had the practice of charging for his time. Nobody complained because his prices were still quite a bit lower than factory prices. Now that I reload, I can see why he does that. Reloading for others can take up quite a bit of time.

The next thing I noticed was that even though I have faith in my reloads, I still get a little nervous when other people shoot them. I guess I'm just a little more willing to blow up one of my guns than someone else's.

So, how do you guys feel about this? Do you reload for anybody else? Does it bother you at all?

metalic never...

shot, well if you want to shoot one of my 16 ga you really don't have a choice.

I don't reload, but if I did, I'd probably not reload for anyone. However, if any friends or family members wanted to use my reloading equipment to reload their own ammo, they'd be welcome to use it.
A friend who started reloading before me had the practice of charging for his time.

When I was thinking of getting into reloading, I thought of doing something like this myself, but quickly dismissed the idea, since it would be a liability nightmare waiting to happen. And there's always the possibility that some hothead who's had his gun blown up will just bypass the courts and decide to come over to your house and take it out of your ass. And said guy probably has other guns besides the one that blew up. He has anger-management issues, is very pissed off at you and has guns. Do you see where this is leading?

Anyway, manufacturing ammo for profit is just way more trouble than it's worth for the average citizen. Leave it to the guys who have lawyers, liability insurance and armed security working at their plants.

I have never and have no intention to reload for anyone else. Actually, there are way too many legal liabilities involved. I don't want someone owning my house because of a mistake. Also, I think it's illegal to sell reloaded ammo without a reloading license. You are placing yourself in a very bad situation if you reload for someone else, especially if you are charging for your services.

The first thing I noticed was that friends now expect me to reload all the cartridges they want for cheap.
If they want cheap ammo let them reload for themselves. You bought the equipment so why can't they? They have some nerve expecting you to spend all your free time reloading for them.

There have been times I've let a very close friend or family member use my reloading setup but they brought the components over to my house and they pulled the handle.

The one exception to the rule, my son who lives with me does shoot my reloads and only because he's still in school and doesn't have much money. Besides, he's my shooting partner. I wouldn't go shooting and leave him out!!

Nope, not even for my own son, he's quite capable of loading his own.

Just my spouse. :)

I've tried repeatedly to get her interested in reloading, but she says I do a fine job. She says she can see I enjoy doing it and she wouldn't want to do anything to diminish that...

Funny, she has the same point of view about tying flies.

I'm sure this isn't the basis of your question, so I appologize for thread drift.

I don't as a normal course.... such as "hey, will you load me up some xxx?"... but I will let others shoot my reloads while I'm around, and I will even borrow some to my brother here and there...

I don't think I would reload with the sole intentions of selling them. However if I was out shooting with a friend and he ran out of ammo and offered to buy some of my reloads that I had on me, I'd consider doing that. (but then he might expect that all the time)

Are you guys really willing to take that chance? If you make a mistake with one of your reloads (and mistakes can and will happen) you know no matter how good a friend there's a chance he/she will take you to court. As soon as the lawyers get involved you are going to be in a world of financial hurt. Your homeowners insurance won't cover that either. If someone gets hurt, even just a little, they will own your house. It happens so don't think it can't happen to you.

If my friend or brother wants my overmortgaged house, let 'em have it.... lol...

Seriously, what kind of friends do you have that would sue you over something like that.... couple that with the unlikely chance of a dangerous situation caused by my load (none in the many thousands so far), and yes, I am willing to take that chance....

I would never reload for sale.... or even on request for someone...

Never !!!!!

Hello, my answer is NEVER to reload for another. I gonna tell you a story. There is a guy at the club which reload 357 mag. He made a batch of rounds (150) with triple loads, yes TRIPLES loads….He did'nt know it of course, when he shot at the range, the revolver exploded….then imagine if that had been your gun.
I have 2 R.C.B.S. green machine (.38 special) and one Dillon (.45 acp) i could reload for my friends, they asked me a lot before, but they know than my answer is still and will still NEVER. First of all you need a license and if your friend ask you to reload for him ask to yourself these question. Why i should reload for him, why i should pass a lot of time in my basement for him? he has just to buy his own equipment, like you did....Your "" friend "" when he asks to you to reload make a guess, he must saying to himself, ""Ok if he reloads for me i'm gonna save a lot of time, a lot of money and he gonna bring me the rounds at the range so I'm lot of laugh ""
Just think about that.
There is few suckers at the range, take care.........

I load the hunting rifle ammo for three of my hunting partners as we have developed accurate loads for their particular rifles along with prefered bullets not available in factory stuff.
As a rule, I do handgun ammo for ME only as the price of factory handgun ammo is STILL within the means of the casual shooter.

Not a good idea. This is from the ATF.gov website: (Manufacturers FAQ)

Is one who reloads ammunition required to be licensed as a manufacturer?

Yes, if he engages in the business of selling or distributing reloads for the purposes of livelihood or profit. No, if he reloads only for his own use.

Use your own judgement.

yes, so far, only one of my brothers. but i would load for others if i knew them, and went shooting with them so a load could be developed. i would not just load, just to load without any testing for anyone.

Reloading for Others

I would recommend that you do not. Any problems can become yours-gun or ammo. They could become very expensive.

I don't shoot others reloads either.

I re-load for my kid brother, but he buys or pays for components. Turns out to be cheaper for him and I get practice. I do not charge him for the actual re-loading.

"Do you reload for anybody else? Does it bother you at all?"

Yes, for a very few friends and family members I like. I don't reccommend it but it doesn't bother me at all and I care not what others do or don't do.

I don't do it for pay, don't do it for everyone. I do know what I'm doing, and I'm good at it, so it's plenty safe.

I have before and still do but I'm very choosy who I reload for. I don't charge for my time but the one person I do load for will supply his own bullets as I don't use that kind and he replaces primers and powder if needed.

sometimes ill load a few shells in odd numbers for shooting buddies, like if they only need like 10 38's for a couple pests around the house or if they dont have the cash for factory ammo, but they have to give me some brass to load and i only charge for components, anything else they feel like they owe me i consider a tip, i always let them shoot my ammo in my guns before loading for them......i have noticed i take about three times longer to load for someone else though for concern about there safety, since i only am loading for family and close friends anyhow.

Legally, as BossHaug pointed out- If you're making a profit, it requires a Class VI FFL IIRC.

In actuality I will load for others, but the list of people I will load for is very short.

Given the current ammo/component situation, I've loaded for others or borrowed components out more than normal lately.

Seriously, what kind of friends do you have that would sue you over something like that.
What makes you think they would be the ones suing? Think insurance company, grieving widow (who's secretly been waiting for him to die for *years*), the deadbeat brother-in-law living in his basement, etc.
