OK guys, in my neverending search for a possible place to move, I am looking towards Monsey NY (Rockland County). Sure, NY laws aren't the greatest, but so long as they are better than NYC they are probably better than here in MD (where very few new handguns are available anymore).

So my question is, what are the gun laws in the Rockland County/Monsey NY area? I know that generally speaking it is a much more conservative/Republican area than NYC so I'm guessing that it is probably more pro-gun. I know that state law will require me to get permits for my guns. In NYC from the sounds of it, I'd be looking at possibly a year or more for my long guns and probably never for permission to keep my handguns. In Monsey/Rockland County what time period would I be looking at? Is this one of the parts of NY where a carry license is a realistic prospect or is it still too close to NYC?

For those who would wonder why I'd consider Monsey when I can go to a more pro-gun area (say PA, VA, TN, TX, etc...) I'll just say that there is more to life than just guns and so long as the area is minimally acceptable for guns I do have other criteria. I am basically unemployed (I still do some substitute teaching but I'm looking for a position in business again), and there aren't many jobs around here (or in much of the country) right now. While the NY area is also part of the job crunch, there is just so much corporate and finance presence in NYC that there will always be more opportunities there than just about anywhere. Monsey is about a 45min train ride to downtown Manhattan- NYC jobs, but without having to live in NYC with all that entails. Also, keep in mind that I am an Orthodox Jew and Monsey is about 75% Orthodox Jewish and there is also a world renoun Yeshiva (religious school) with programming for working adults as well as full-time day programs in Monsey. If I can find a job in NY where I can afford the housing there (Monsey isn't cheap) it would be the perfect place for me to spend a few years if the gun laws aren't bad (or are at least better than MD).

The gun permit situation here in Rockland has tightened up considerably.
The two issuing judges are Kelly and Resnick. If you are in the town of Ramapo, where Monsey is located, you have Judge Kelly.

You will be issued a target/Sportsman license. This means you can carry to the range and back as well as to hunting, hiking, fishing, etc....

The pistol clerk in the county is Charlie and he is a very helpful guy. He is pro-gun and belongs to a local gun club. The Ramapough Sportsmen Association has a range in Suffern, close to Monsey, so you might want to inquire about joining.( It is a pistol/.22LR range). There are several other clubs and public ranges in the area.

Your long guns do not need to be licensed or registered.

First time applications take three months and are then followed by a safety class of 3 hours at the Fire Training Center. The Sheriff's Department is responsible for investigating you. You will be given a permit with a piece of paper that allows you to pick up your first firearm. You must give the paper to your firearms dealer after you get your purchase put on your license.
Once your firearm is on your license then you can pick up you gun.

Your permit is not honored in NYC although their permits are honored everywhere in the state. Not to worry as they issue very few in NYC.

You must have a permit before you can take possession of any pistols in this state, even if you have a permit from another state. Best to have them sent to an FFL here to avoid any problems. As soon as you get a permit you can get them put on your license. Oh, I forgot to mention they charge three dollars per pistol to be put on your license. One time charge though!

They are now switching from paper permits to plastic.

If you have any other questions you can asend me a PM.
