Does anyone NOT use expensive hollowpoint ammo in their defensive handguns?

I think if the shooting starts, the bad guy will run as fast from FMJ as JHP. I load up what I shoot at the range an am confident with.

I use FMJ for self defense. I practice with it, I am comfortable with it, and I feel that it will do the job if necessary.

For my .357 mag I use jacketed hollow points and for my .45 acp I use FMJ-RN. When I started reloading these were just economical (i.e., relatively cheap) and the more I shoot them and see what they do just in target shooting I wouldn't hesitate to use them for self defense. For me it's just one of those things that I know how they'll perform and I'm comfortable with them.

I have been carrying hollow points in either Remington Golden Sabers or Federal Premium HST's, both in 124gr in my 9mm Rami. However, I've decided to save my more expensive ammo and am now carrying Winchester SXZ9 115gr. hollow points. :neener:

Well having seen what a solid lead does to a human head I will stick with reloads for anything beyond my initial magazine. Carry with duty ammo, but everything else is out of the Dillon. Can't afford to shoot up the town with the good stuff.

Just got a box of WWB JHP at wally world for ~$28.
If they work on 2 legged pigs like they do on 4 legged ones, i'm not worried for my family.
Whatever Buckshot is laying around for bedroom gun, if I remembered to change out the #6 after the last hunting trip......... :uhoh:be right baaack !

I mostly rely on one of my revolvers for SD & load them with my own reloads :
158 LSW & 5.3 gr W-231
or
125 JSP & 5.6 gr VV N320 in .38 Spl
or maybe 200 gr LSWC & 8.5 gr VV N 320 in .45 Colt.

But that's just because hollowpoint bullets are outlawed in Belgium. Back when they were still available I used Federal 125 JHP or Winchester Silvertips in .357 Mag or Federal 200 gr .LSWCHP in .44 Spl.

Yep, I carry Premium HP SD Ammo.

Yes, indeed.

I don't buy the REALLY expensive specialty stuff like Cor-Bon or Glaser, but I do carry Speer/Winchester/Hornady type premium SD ammo. I have a hard time choking down paying more than $1 for ONE ROUND for SD, but I will not carry a handgun for SD with ammo that won't do the job. I do believe in placement, but I also believe in making the best odds in your favor.

No point in worrying about Hague Convention ban on expanding ammo if you're trying to defend life and limb.

I don't shoot the really spendy stuff at the range often. I do shoot up what I carry often enough that I'm always packing ammo no more than a year old.

Another thread a few weeks ago, people were advocating shooting up your old "carry ammo" after treating yourself to a brand new box on your birthday, as a memory jogger. Some of us forget to cycle through the carry ammo on a schedule, and doing it on your birthday makes sense like changing the batteries in your smoke alarm on New Year's. It works for me.
