I found out recently that they are going to open a Dick's Sporting Goods in my area. Does Dick's carry guns? If so, long guns only or handguns too? Any evil black rifles? Thanks
Just long guns, no handguns. And as mentioned previously, the selection is heavily weighted towards the sporting side of things. About the only things you can count on seeing that are even mildly evil might be some short-barreled shotguns.
I've only ever seen "sporting" firearms at Dick's and no handguns. Though I haven't been in one for quite a while now.
In my experience Dick's is not only their name, it's their management style.
I went in once with a sale flyer looking for some ammo. I only saw one box on the shelf and went to the counter to ask if they had more in the back. Waited at the counter for a bit while some employees walked by. Then I finally went up to one and asked, politely, about the ammo. He kind of grunted that there wasn't a sale on ammo. So I showed him the flyer, eventually he dug around under the counter, found nothing, and I left.
The big Dick's store (Phoenix/Tempe) sells rifles, shotguns and ammo. They are putting up smaller ones in the shopping malls, but these are not open for business yet, so I don't know if they will sell guns.
There's a Dicks over outside Chicago that has no guns in the "sporting/hunting goods" store -- it's within x number of feet of a school so instead of telling the town to get lost they rollled over and shafted their customers.
Their selection is usually quite limited. At first glance, they appear to have quite a guns on the racks behind the counter. Unfortunately, there are usually 3 - 10 of each model on the rack, making for few models on display.
Not aware of any that sell handguns. But long guns and ammo (including pistol) are sold in the ones I have been in. Possible that there are some that don't. You'll know as soon as they start advertising.
they have rifles and shotguns and all sorts of ammo. All the ammo seems to be overpriced in my area but my girlfriend bought a Rossi shotgun there and got a good deal on it. Their sales are pretty good.

It depends a lot on the time of year- the gun selection is very seasonal. I worked for Dick's for a few years, and our total stock varied from maybe 80 or so in the springtime, up to 400 or more when fall rolled around.
Again, keep in mind that their target demographic is hunters. Finding the odd Persuader or 590 in there is pretty much pure luck. If you want something to bust clays or drop Bambi with, you'll be OK. If you want something to lean in the corner by the bed, you're apt to leave empty-handed.
The one closest to me doesn't sell anything firearm related. The closest thing you'd find is an airsoft gun or an archery setup.
There is one further down the road that does sell firearm stuff. The guy who works the counter is an avid shooter, and if they sell something that's cheaper at one of the independent gun shops a few miles away he'll tell you.
He'd be far suited at an exclusive gun shop.... oh well, win some lose some.
They just opened a store in my local mall (kicked out the decent Mexican restaurant to do it! ), and they sell long guns and black powder guns, and have some occasional good sales on ammo.
They do have the new Remington AR-type rifle, even though it's not legal, in Pennsylvania, to hunt with a semi-auto rifle. Their prices compare favorably with any other new gun retailer, too, particularly during seasonal sales.
Where I used to live (Arlington, VA and Reston, VA) the Dicks had long guns, blackpowder, and pistols.
Now as to if they really "sold" them, well that could be called into question. The Reston store was great, but in Arlington you pretty much had to track down a sales-drone, grab 'em by the ear, and drag them back to the counter only to have them tell you that only a manager could unlock the racks. Eventually the manager would "rush back" usually panting out of breath to show how busy he/she had been and then give you an odd look that you actually wanted to handle a gun.
I do have to wonder what Dick Stack would think of all of this. He was a good friend of my father back when I was growing up in upstate NY (Binghamton) and I can remember often "chatting him up" at his store (one of two at the time) near SUNY Binghamton back in 1982 shortly before he retired. Great guy and strong advocate of all outdoor sports. Probably a supporter of RKBA as well though that didn't get discussed nearly as much back then.
We carry, as most have said, mainly "sporting arms". Mostly hunting rifles and shotguns though we do have a Mossberg 930 SPX sitting in the rack right now. Some stores do carry the R-15, though my store does not. As for ammo prices it really depends on the day. In my 6 months there prices have jumped across the board but when we have a sale the prices are fairly decent. Though if you have the time and set up reloading is the way to go these days.
