Domestic WOLF type ammo?

After reading the 5.45 vs 7.62 thread and horror stories about imported ammo being banned, I started thinking...

Isn't it possible for a US based company to make ammunition just like WOLF? Steel case, bi-metal bullet, Berdan primers, non-reloadable, etc, plinking ammo that can be just as cheap as imported WOLF!?!?

Please tell me it can be done!

I doubt it.

For one, Russia has mass quantities of cheap steel. They have cheaper labor. And they've been set up from the cold war days to equip most of the Warsaw Pact with ammunition of steel case type.

It is pretty tough for us to beat them in labor costs, business expenses and raw material.

Hitlary will most likely put an end to Russian ammo imports. She, as a Senator, whined a few years back that Russia should be punished for selling missiles to Iran by stopping arms imports to America.


Now, even if some ammo companies could do it, why would they want to? They'd rather make more money off of less quanity. Don't expect a single manufacturer to shed a tear when foreign ammo will be banned.

A lot of what allows the russians to produce ammo so cheaply is that not only was it their major military caliber for years, but they sold their guns and ammo to many other countries. They're geared up for high production rates and with that comes economy of scale. The exchange rate helps, along with their lower cost of labor and a number of other factors. It wouldn't be cost effective to try and mass produce the amounts they do since we wouldn't have as wide of market.

Very few 'Made in USA' products are cheap anymore. Or at least what we perceive as 'cheap'.

If anything I'm suprised we don't see ammo from China.

Clinton took care of the Chinese imports. Back in the 'good ole days' they were bringing in cases of the Chinese ammo (which was actually fairly accurate in Chinese AK's) for cheap. Cheap rifles, cheap ammo by the case. Less demand back then.

if some one was a good business man, if import from russia is banned, pick up and move production to Mexico. we wouldnt even need to import it. it will just walk across the boarder like everything else in mexico. (joke)

Aguila is located in Mexico. For the most part it is cheaper than U.S. manufactured, but can't beat the Russians, who have that huge Cold War era production apparatus.

The copper factor

I think the fact that much of Wolf's ammo contains zero copper helps with cost. The .45 ACP and the 5.56 (.223) contain only copper plating. The projectile is steel (HPs and FMJs).

When you get into Wolf's premium (copper projectile) ammunitions, such as their soft points, Wolf is just as-expensive-as Remington, et. al. Last I checked, on average $19.00/box of 20.

The best we could hope for would be the rifle equivalent of Winchester white-box bulk pistol ammo. Most American manufactureres and importers recommend against steal cased ammo and would be reluctant to produce it. If you don't mind factory reloads, Ultra-Max comes in boxes of 50 and is cheaper than new brass-cased ammo. The brass is mixed but generally in good condition, mostly once-fired but possibly some twice-fired.

I wonder if aluminum cased ammo would be good enough. CCI makes pistol ammunition in aluminum cases but I haven't seen rifle ammo. It was a bit cheaper than the cheapest WWB last time I looked.

The aluminium cased Blazer is Berdan primed. If Aguila went to aluminium cases with production methods that are otherwise similar to what Wolf's Russian line uses that would probably be the closest thing.

+1. I have often hoped for this. There would be some significant start-up
cost involved in new machines/cases/bullets (5.45) that CCI would have to
make. However, at any time someone could come along and make it legal to
import a couple of mountains of chinese ammo that would sell for $2/box and
kill off CCI's business investment because American loyalty would take the
usual short-sighted-save-a-buck-today-and-pay-more-tomorrow turn.

it away at cost!"

American Consumer: "Wally's big box world has chinese milsurp for 1/2 of
what yours is selling for."
