Hi, what are people's opinions on the Wolf .223 Coppet Jacket ammunition? It is very cheap, just a tiny bit more expensive than the steel cased wolf, but I have found a good deal for it. It looks like around $300for case of 1000. Maybe a little moer with shipping.

Anyhow, I was told that this stuff doesn't gunk up the guns like the regular steel case wolf, because the coating helps the ammo shoot cleaner. What aer people's opinions about this stuff? For the cheap price I am tempted to take it, but I know many people say not to use anything with the name "Wolf" on it.

I never really have any issues with wolf. the copper stuffs decent, i still prefer Barnaul or the three bears if im shootin the cheap stuff.

Why is the brown/silver bear ammo so good, when it is lacquered coated? Someone told me you must avoid shooting lacquer coated ammo through an AR15 gun. Perhaps I should have mentioned that the guns I will be shooting the ammo through are DPMS Sportical 5.56 and Rock River Tactical A4. I was wary of Brown Bear because of the lacquer coating. Perhaps it may shoot better than wolf though, I don't know of that.

I also see Wolf Copper Hollow Point. Wouldn't this be more powerful/defensive round round than your typical FMJ? The price for the hollow points is very cheap, but I don't know how accurate, clean and the quality of this ammunition.

lacquer

From what I understand, it's a bit of an urban legend that the lacquer coating will melt and stick to your chamber.

It doesn't.

However, it is dirty. So is polymer wolf. This may be because of the expansion qualities of steel, in that it leaves a bit of space outside of the case in the chamber.

Clean your rifle and keep it lubed and either will be fine.

Lacquer isn't the problem, the steel is the problem. It doesn't expand like brass does, so when you shoot a bunch of steel then try to shoot brass, the brass expands and 'welds' itself into the chamber with all the crap that cheap steel ammunition puts out.

Clean your rifle, and it'll shoot any ammunition you want it to.

I've pretty much been shooting nothing but steel cased ammo the past couple of years for price reasons. No issues for me other than cheap and accurate don't go together so they suck if you want nice tight groups. OTOH if you are minute of 2-liter bottle for fun shooting 2000 steel cased rounds are twice the fun of 1000 brass rounds for the same cost.

You can get the Centurion "GI contractor" reloadable brass ammo 55gr FMJ for about $350/1000 from AIM Surplus or Sportsman's Guide. I've not tried it yet, but other reports I've read say its OK. AR15.com should have a good discussion of it going.

I never had any problems with lacquer or steel in Wolf, or any of the Bear ammo, And I have shot thousands of rounds in rifles and pistols. Never had an extractor break, or anything stuck because of melted lacquer. I have seen shells so hot, you couldn't touch them, without any melted or even sticky lacquer.
