Hey Guys, my lgs has a DPMS Panther for 599$, has everything but the handle and also a Colt for 899$, which would be the best buy, or the best buy of another brand. I really don't need it I just want one and been thinking about a AR for a while now and the only way to quit thinking about it is for me to go ahead and get one. I'm thinking about getting one about noon today.

btw, .223 cal

Hopefully you're referring to DPMS and not DMPS. Probably a decent AR but personally the Colt will probably hold a better value down the road. Which model Colt is it?

Spend the extra money if only considering these two. The DPMS was my first AR, was ok-not great. For a little more $, you can get a fantastic rifle. Also excellent quality brands are Daniel Defense, Bravo Company, LMT, Colt. You can get rifles from those manufacturers from $899-$1300. When m4carbine.com comes back up, check out the updated list which compares all the major manufactures.

Tape, for the same money, get the S&W "Sportical" or what ever it's called. Way, way better deal for the same amount of money.

DPMS is not well thought of by most AR fans. :scrutiny:

I got an S&W M&P 15 optics ready recently for $770 with a $100 rebate. Neat starter setup.

I believe its cousin is called Sport.

Al, a google search for S&W "Sportical" returns none but plenty of DPMS "Sportical" is that what you meant, I know of the S&W MP15??

hey guys, thanks for your replies, well I went with the Colt AR-15A3 LE Carbine (model 6721) the reason it was sold used but still has the copper lube in the receiver. I think Colt used copper lube, It's completely clean and looks like its never been fired. I also went with Colt because I believe the resale value will hold better then the DPMS. It's stamped 5.56 on the barrel, also had a UTG quad front rail. I will get some pics soon.

BTW I paid 926 OTD

Please correct me if I posted anything thats incorrect. Thanks guys

Is this a price comparison?

Did you buy something? Sounded like you were considering the DPMS and the Colt and considering other options.

I have a DPMS. Think it is decent gun, but if I could afford the Colt I think it is a better buy.

disregard, I found it goes by the pre-fix in your serial #

Serial Number Prefix Model Name Sample Model
BD AR15A3 Tactical Carbine 6721
CC Colt Carbine R6520
CH Competition HBAR 6700
GC Government Carbine 6520
GS Governmodel Model Service 6550
MH Match HBAR 6601
ML Match Lightweight R6530
MT Match Target
SP Sporter SP1 or SP2
ST Sporter Target 6551
TA 9mm 6450 6430

Here's the pictures of the rifle, the UTG rail, all alum with rail covers, I can't see the other rails be any better but I will see, as the only complaint is screws coming loose, I can fix that. I see no reason to throw out a 80$ part because screws come loose. There is also a CAA butt stock that has the battery storage compartment lol, I don't think they come from Colt with those stocks, can anyone confirm that?
Then the overall rifle, 5.56cal stamped on the barrel and I am glad I added 300$ to the 599$ the panther cost. Thanks to all that replied for me, I learned a little about the black evil rifle.

if you click on the pictures on the bottom you get a better resolution, I guess I need to invest in a better camera, I just can't get the lighting right.

Looks fine. AR's are hard to photograph. Need to go outside in the sun.

Thats a good rifle. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. ecellent rifle to grow with. My Colt 6920 has been flawless. I paid more than you did.:banghead:

Tape Colt does not, and never has, shipped rifles with UTG or CAA parts. The previous owner also swapped that railed gas block on. Find a gunsmith or armorer who's familiar with ARs to make sure it's mounted correctly. Also, you may want to remove the rail covers from gas block; unless you want them melted to it. You did well buying a lightly used Colt for the price you paid. It may need a few tweaks here or there, but nothing major. Enjoy the new rifle.

ugaarguy, thanks for your good info, don't you think the rail covers are heat proof? I don't know but it seem it should be, it just don't make sense to have to remove them when they are there more for protecting your hands. I more then likely am wrong but have you seen any melt?
