From time to time I encounter drunk people in my daily life. Today I was at Bass Pro Shops encouraging my new roommate to purchase either a Walther P99 or a Springfield XD for his first handgun purchase. He definitely liked how the Walther felt, but likes the look of the XD better. So he's still up in the air.

Anyways back to the topic at hand. As I was purchasing .380 ammo and a boresnake there was a guy behind me who asked what I was buying. His face was busted up as well. I told him and he asked if I was going to shoot anyone today. I told him, "not unless I have to."

Then he said he would just stab people and pulled out one of those tactical knives and started waving it semi-wildly. I immediately stepped away from him a good 10 feet and put a counter between us because I was waiting for my roommate. He obviously made the cashier readily nervous and she was just trying to get him outta there. None of us said anything because we did not desire to agitate him. It just reinstilled in me that I need to hurry up and get my CCDW back from the state as that made me go into threat mode. I wouldn't have drawn on him, wasn't necessary, but I sure would have preferred to have it.

911.

"Hello? Yes, there's a drunk waving a knife around at Bass Pro Shop. Can you send someone over before he hurts someone? Thanks"

Click.

Problem solved.

Moving toward Strategy & Tactics . . .

In 5 . . . 4 . . . 3 . . .

Proper procedure dealing with drunks or other non-compos-mentis persons armed with [whatever], brandishing, but not apprearing to present a specific threat.

Scenario #1: You are armed. What do you do?

Scenario #2: You are not armed. What do you do?

Of course, it becomes more interesting when the venue is the gun counter at a sporting goods store.

Did that particular gun store have a sign in the window saying no concealed carry allowed?

If so, you could be prosecuted for carrying even if there were witnesses that you shot him in self defense.

Just a thought.

B. D., at 10 ft a gun might only have made him feel better. Of course, that's what CCW does 99.99% of the time. It sounds like that's all vis-a-vis was looking for.

1. Get distance
2. Call cops

That's what they get paid to do you know. It ain't all glamor and ticket writing.

Actually NO. There are about 26 court decisions, stating that police doesn't have to protect serfs... ah "citizens", but just to restore "public order" whatever that means.

If you call 911 and a Pizza delivery, who's first?

After a burglary, with the very good chance the perps were still in the neighbourhood, it took 4 hours and 45 minutes for a single police officer to show up. Happened in Las Vegas, the local channels had quite a few interviews with the victim.

cuervo & RobW.:
The world ain't the same all over.

Locally: response time will depend on what else is going on in the county and what your call is about. E.G.: Ambulance call:"get out-gunshot to face". 5 troopers showed up in about 10 minutes. Deputy has drunk pulled over in front of local bar; asked me, John Q Citizen: "Ya in a hurry?" "Whatcha need?" "Watch my back while I search the car, my backup's 45 minutes away?"

Gun stores here that had a "No legal concealed carry" sign are out-of-business. I won't go in a gun shop unarmed in any state I'm legal. Saw a news piece today: cops tased some fruitcake who was swinging a sword in a mall. Could have justifiably shot him, but they used their judgement instead. All turned out well.

Stay safe.

If this guy was within 10 feet of you with a knife he could have killed you or hurt you bad before you could draw.

I am aware of that and recalled Officer Tueller. Which is why I placed a nice, inconvienant, obstacle between him and I. If he decided to come after me drunk being where I was, I do believe he would have failed. I would have had ample time to flee and if I were armed I would have had time to draw down and fire.

Call 911. If the area had a bass pro shop, it would make me believe the area has a decent size police force. If you mention the words drunk and knife, an officer should respond quickly. Key word should respond quickly. Some in my profession are lazy or like to take the scenic route to a call, hoping it resolves itself before they get there.

cuervo,
I don't think it matters if a store has a sign or not as they do not supercede state law. All they could do if you had to draw and fire on someone is ban you from the store, at least that's my humble opinion. I don't think there are any laws that say you can be prosecuted for a good shoot if it happens in a store with a "no weapons" sign. At least not in Florida.

If You Had Your CHL......

You might have drawn your :what: .380......:what:

But that's a whole different thread now, isn't it?

"Hey buddy that's pretty cool, can I see it? Whoa careful there, handle first I don't want to get cut. Thanks! You know this hinge is has a bad bearing, yup definitely a bad bearing. Hey cash-register girl, can you have your technicians fix this up? Free? Sounds great. There ya go buddy, it's your lucky day!"

In NC, having a sign on the door not allowing CC is part of the state law. So, in theory, you could be arrested for carrying concealed where it's not allowed, even if you weren't arrested for shooting someone. The same law does allow for the fact that someone may not see the sign, but in most places around here it is hard to miss. But, as they say, better judged by 12 than carried by 6.

If the BPS in KY is the same as the one I worked at in Houston, you or the lil' teeny bopper bubble smacker behind the register should have been able to summon loss prevention. If the register in question was at either end of the store, there should have been an LP agent there watching the registers. One quick call on the radio and he could have summoned a LEO lurking around the mall the BPS is more than likely attached to.

Granted it contains less powder than a 9mm, but it is the same size round. Given that I dont plan on shooting anyone who is across the street, but rather is in front of me, I think it'd do just fine. In fact, I would be willing to bet it'd stop you. :neener:
