Hello out their in CRT land!

I emailed DSA arms www.dsarms.com with a question based on a rumor: Might you be making a domestically produced AUG?

I didnt expect the rumor to hold water whatsoever, but look at the reply:
Dear Sir,
Thank you for your e-mail. At this moment we are still in discussion with Steyr. Please check back with us in 2-3 months. Thank you for your interest.

DSA
Kristi

The rumor was not a rumor at all, but it was firmly based on a fact! DSA is in discussion with steyr to acquire parts kits and manufactur a domestically produced AUG!

For those of you who dont know who DSA is, they make fine FAL style rifles, possibly the finest in America.

I am unbeleivably excited by this latest development!
I want one primarily because its somewhat exotic and a really neat design.
Everyone who is interested, give a holler to DSA and tell them you want this to happen. The US market could use another bullpup, and if its done with DSA quality, it will be a gem indeed.

Dear Santa,

Let the talks fall through and get DSA to start talking to Sig about that 550! ;)

Yep. clubsoda22.....

"easily converted for left handed shooters?"
************************************************************

All that's required is a LH bolthead and swapping the plastic plug plate over to the right side of the receiver.:D

The Australian Army's experience with the AUG has been generally positive, with some concerns about improper lube allowing the plastic bits in the trigger group to soften during rapid fire.

They are neat handling little rifles;) .

The integral optic sight makes for easy hits.:)

I'd rather the scope be removed and replaced with a weaver platform for mounting standard optics (like the AUG marksman's variant). I've heard the 1.5x "doughnut of death" reticule" isn't all that great. Better, in my opinion, to have an ACOG or similar proven optic on there.

Just a picture of a domestically produced AUG would be enough to cause Sarah Brady and her ilk cardiac arrest. That rifle is way too evil looking. There must be some way to make it look more benign with a full length walnut stock or something?

The barrel length on the second one pictured must be at least 24 inches, I would buy that model for the added velocity.

Why the heck would you want a sig550 produced by two manufacturers?

Didnt sig already say it would build a new plant in America after the ban sunset? I beleive they said they would produce a domestic SIG 550 if the ban looked like it would be gone for a good while.

Have you guys played Jagged Alliance 2? If you click on the AUG info, it says it's the poster child for gun control because of its evil appearance :D

I think Twoblink needs one so he can have 'Steyr Logistics' (tm)

Skunkabilly:
Yeah, I've noticed that (and laughed the first time I read it). The only problem is that by the time I find the AUG (at Tixa, usually), my 1st string team normally has M14s, AK74s and the like, the AUG goes right to the 2nd or 3rd string guys.

I wish I could afford a real AUG, would be sweet to just have one, even if it was just a safe queen. :(

A standard, classic and affordable AUG would be a great find.

Yes and about as likely as finding the winning lottery ticket. DSA for those that don't know build the only new FAL anywhere as far as I know but certainly the only one in the US. It lists for about $1,500.

The other DSA guns are kit guns built on Styer parts kits. DSA bought Styer's FAL parts stock and their machinery and blueprints. This is where their relationship with Styer comes from. So if anyone other than Styer builds a domestic AUG it would probably be DSA. But I wouldn't count on it being cheap.

They're probably also waiting on seeing if the AWB expires in '04 (odds are in our favor right now...)

Not so much for the AUG itself, but the mags. There aren't many AUG mags in circulation, while forgien pre-'94 mags are importable, the AUG is pretty new, relatively speaking, and not in wide military circulation so surplus mag supplies would likely be low to nonexistant. I'm sure DSA knows people aren't likely to invest in a US made/assembled AUG unless new mags come in, or it's modified to take AR-15/M-16 magazines.

I can garantee there's no way I'll be paying $1XXX.XX for an AUG if I can't get standard capacity mags for it.

Let's pray. :D

I would eat the extra price if they shipped a magazine pouch full of them with the rifle, particularly if it was the AUG waffle magazine.
I dont really care about its originality... or should I say authenticity...
Im looking for a kick butt blaster.

That sounds somewhat logical surfinUSA, but not very comprehensive.

You speak of costs. First, AUGs require far less machining than FALs do. Secondly, by the time you get any AR tricked out to some level of practical effectiveness, you’ll probably meet or surpass the price of any future DSA offered AUG.

Affordability is certainly a relative thing, but $1500 is less than $4500 (for a pre-ban) in most languages.

Being left handed, and not a huge fan of the bullpup design anyhow, I can't say that I'd personally be interested in purchasing one, but I'd like to see them here anyway. I think the Brady Bunch better get used to seeing a lot of new guns around if the AWB sunsets. There is no doubt that HK is building a US factory, and I think chances are good that SIG would start producing domestic rifles as well. Man, if there was ever a domestically produced SIG 55X available, with all the evil features and plenty of mags on hand, I'd be ALL OVER it. If the ban goes down, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see brand new AUGs, G36s, 55Xs, etc become available. For a price, of course.

Secondly, by the time you get any AR tricked out to some level of practical effectiveness...

??? ARs are pretty damn effective just the way they are. There lies the problem for the "imports". Even if the AWB is lifted (enabling mags to be produced), the HK, SIG, AUG, etc clone manufacturers are still going to want $1500++ for their guns, guaranteed. And, you will still be able to buy an AR that does the exact same thing for 1/3 - 1/2 the price, and this will still be MOST peoples' choice. In fact if these guns are NOT brought to the market, it would likely be because they can't compete with the AR on the AR's home turf. But the more variety the better, I would love to see any and all of them for sale by this time next year. Not that they would be brought to the market that quickly anyway.
