Dumbest gun rumor...

That no matter what gun you buy or carry half the folks you talk to
have an Uncle Charlie who was Marine sniper who had the same
gun & "couldn't hit the side of a barn with it & it jammed all the
time" while the other half's Uncle Charlie "could hit hummingbirds on the wing with his".

Too many posts to read all of them and this may have been said previously, anyway, the dumbest gun rumor I personally heard.
Many years ago when I enlisted in the service (1954) our firearms instructor told us that the .45acp was designed to take a man down with one round and that it was so powerful that if you hit him on his little finger it would spin him around and knock him off his feet.:D

Everyone has listed some excellent ones, so the only minor pet peeve idiocy is when supposedly knowlegeable people call loaded rounds, "bullets". I correct them everytime, to thier great annoyance.....:banghead:

This isn't really a myth, just something stupid someone said to me.

"why do you carry around a gun? You'll just end up killing someone with it"

-Pylon

Do you consider the .32acp useful... How about carrying some CS, it'll work better.

I've heard a lot of stupid things, but this certainly ranked. I offered to take a blast of CS before shooting the poster, but he never replied.

Of course, he also claimed:
the last time I got hit by a pocket pistol it failed to go through my leather

"I used to work at Quantico and the FBI's head pathologist heard me shooting in the range with some of my special ammo. He came down and I told him what they chrono'ed at and he told me that if I hit someone in the arm that the pressure would travel up their blood vessels and cause the heart to explode."

Paraphrased from some guy at the local range. It's BS and all, but I make it a habit not to correct or argue with self-important types, tends to waste time.

Shooting blown-out .44 mag cases in .50 AE Desert Eagles when they first came out, as there was no factory ammo readily available. Is this even possible? Seems like a rather difficult way to make a rebated-rim case. Apparently this involved fire-forming by shooting .44 mags out of the .50 gun.

'Nuther guy was telling me how bullets achieve their maximum velocity some distance AFTER they'd left the barrel, which helped to make the .44 mag LESS effective at close range...

""That SIG P-220 is so accurate, they did a test in a magazine where they shot it at a razor blade with two matches behind it, and the bullet hit the razor blade dead on, split in half, and lit both matches."

Sounds like the old muzzleloading rondevous trick, where a double-bit axe is stuck in a log and two clay pigeons hung, one on either side.

The idea is to shoot at the axe so that the ball splits and both clays break.

It's tough as hell.

Yes Mike, but at least the axe deal IS possible. Especially with pure lead.

But....

A razor blade splitting a 9mm? Are we talking a real bullet or wax?
And lighting 2 matches. :what: ROFLMAO
I'd want to shake the hand of the person who could do that. Maybe some of that pure luck would rub off on me.
You'd have better odds of winning the Power Ball lottery!

Girl I know: Guns are evil.
Me: So you wouldn't use a gun to protect your life of the life of a loved one.
Girl I know: Violence just isn't the answer
Me: So, if you come home from work and find a guy raping your (Mom, sister, daughter, dad) and you had a gun you would not stop this heinous crime
Girl: (20 seconds of silence) Well...ummm....thats different
Me: You just said violence is not the answer...

Rumor: Violence is not the answer

can't beleive I haven't seen this one yet ..

"A .50 BMG is so powerful that the shockwave from the bullet passing by a man can kill him"

I HEARD THAT A 38 WILL BOUNCE OF A CAR WINDOW IF STRUCK AT THE RIGHT ANGLE. I ACTUALLY BELIEVE THIS ONE THOUGH. AND I WOULD RATHER BE SHOT BUY A 9MM ANY DAY RATHER THAN A 22

A 38 will bounce off a car window if struck from the wrong angle as will many other cartridges.

I've also heard that several THR members will get their undergarments constricted into an unpleasant crevice when you type in all caps!

I was in one of my customer's gunshop a few years back. I overheard some genius tell his buddy," get that .45 Glock. A .45 pushes so much wind that it will knock a man down flat - even if you miss him!"

I knew a .45 Glock owner that could pass so much wind that it would knock a man down flat. Does that count? :neener:

Tom :D
