What’s your thoughts on Eley and Aguila subsonic for squirrel hunting and target shooting? Can’t find cci standard or subsonic but Eley and Aguila seems plentiful but I’ve never shot any of it. I read some reviews that say the Eley have lots of misfires and others saying it’s great ammo.

Eley what has misfires? Eley is a brand. They make several varieties. I seen a lot of Eley branded ammo at BR matches. Never saw any of it giving anyone FTF problems.

I have had good luck with Eley. For me their Club, target, and subsonic slightly more accurate than CCI
Aguila Super Extra / Standard Velocity shoots the best of any I've tried in both my CX 457 and Tikka T1X. Never tried any real good stuff and I'm far from the best shot but I'll settle for all groups ( 5 shots at 50 yds) <1/2 inch and the occasional one that's < .3 inch any day.

To those that blame the 22LR ammo for misfires, I suggest cleaning of firing pin, channel and hammer and retesting for reliable ignition. And if the firing system parts are worn ... Well, there are solutions.

For the past 2 years, I have shot over 16,000 rounds of over 20 brand/weight 22LR ammunition and in my 10/22 Take Down/Collector #3, ARs with CMMG 22LR conversion kits, T/CR22 and GSG 1911, every brand of ammunition fired (with the exception of Winchester M22) reliably without misfires. If I keep the firearms clean and properly lubed, even the cheap bulk ammo will feed/extract reliably. To my surprise (at the urging of THR members), "Thunderduds" that I wrote off due to misfires years ago were tested and shot consistently, producing one of smaller groups tested at 25/50 yards - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...lector-3-break-in.859106/page-2#post-11351163

Following is a listing of most accurate to least accurate based on composite of various firearms, particularly brand new 10/22 and T/CR22 where every 10 shot groups were captured out of the box - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...15-20-500-shipped.853059/page-3#post-11534906

As you know, 22LR accuracy can vary for firearms used and for my 10/22s, CCI SV and Blazer 40 gr Lead RN consistently produced the smallest groups over several thousand rounds of testing. Aguila 40 gr Lead RN was right behind CCI SV and with T/CR22, showing accuracy promise along with Aguila Pistol Match Competition.
  • Aguila 40 gr Lead RN Pistol Match Competition Eley Prime (Boxed) - Initial testing showed promise
  • Aguila 40 gr Lead RN Eley/Aguila Prime (Boxed) - T/CR22 produced smaller groups than CCI SV
  • CCI Standard Velocity 40 gr Lead RN (Boxed)
  • CCI Blazer 40 gr Lead RN (Boxed)
  • Federal Auto Match 40 gr Lead RN (Bulk pack)
  • Aguila 40 gr CPRN Eley/Aguila Prime (Boxed)
  • Winchester 36 gr CPHP 555 (Bulk pack)
  • Remington 36 gr CPHP Golden Bullet (Bulk pack)
  • Winchester 36 gr XPert (Bulk pack)
  • Remington 40 gr Lead RN Thunderbolt (Bulk pack) - While very small groups on par with CCI SV/Blazer were produced on occasion, it was not consistent
  • Federal 40 gr Lead RN Champion (Boxed)
  • Federal 38 gr CPHP Field Pack (Bulk pack)
  • Armscor 36 gr CPHP (Boxed) - While smaller groups were respectable, overall group size were not consistent but not bad for lowest priced copper plated ammo
  • Winchester 40 gr CPRN M22 (Bulk pack) - Several duds per box
  • Federal 36 gr CPHP Walmart 550 red box (new box) - Bulk pack
  • Federal 36 gr CPHP Walmart 550 red box (old box) - Bulk pack
  • Federal 36 gr CPHP Value 525 blue box (Bulk pack)
Pending testing:
  • Aguila 38 gr CPHP Aguila Prime (Boxed)
  • CCI Standard 40 gr LRN (new blue box)
  • CCI MiniMag Target 40 gr CPRN
  • ELEY Sport 40 gr LRN
  • Federal Game Shok 40 gr CPRN
  • Federal Match 40 gr LRN
  • Winchester SuperX 40 gr CPRN

If it shoots good it does not matter, plenty for squirrels with head shots.
I get that lol. My issue is I have to drive 30min each way to get some. Don’t wanna jump into a 500rd brick and have it be junk. I purchased some segmented HP from CCI thinking $8-50 would make it accurate and it’s crap out of 2 rifles.

I use a lot of Aguilar super extra through my single action revolver it's good enough to hit an apple on a fence post at twelve or so yards and can put down an armadillo with a five and a half inch barrel.

I may have had a few misfires but can't remember the last time I did.

I use both the lead and copper plated 40 grain round noses and the I believe 36 grain copper plated hollow points. Usually can find it fairly easily and cheaply, which is a bit of a selling point for me but just noodling around I have enough faith in it that I don't feel the need to splurge.

Of course the usual disclaimer about the gun likes what the gun likes apply.

By far my favorite squirrel and small game 22 ammo is Aguila subsonic, but it generally won't cycle semi autos. In my 10/22 I use the Aguila CPRN high velocity to shoot everything up to beavers, although I have decided that a 22 is not enough for a 40 pound beaver with a thick skull. Plenty accurate for a muskrat on the move at 30 to 40 yards.

I've only tried the Eley Target but never had any issues with it. It's entry level SV target ammo.

Eley is typically known for their high quality (and high priced) rimfire target and match ammo.

I've shot many types of Aguila .22 LR and have been very pleased with them all, but I haven't tried the subsonic yet even though I have a few boxes of it.

At one time most Aguila rimfire ammo was Eley primed but several years ago Aguila switched to using their own primer material on most, if not all their rimfire ammo.

Overall, I have been impressed with the performance of the different types of Aguila .22 LR that I have tried.

If you can find them, Supermaximum makes CCI Stingers look weak but the Supermax is not as accurate. Both have more spread than SV ammo.

Interceptors are fairly accurate and with a standard 40 gr. bullet are a bit faster (~1350 fps) than other brands of HV ammo.

Aguila Super Colibri (20gr. @600fps) have no powder (primer only) and are my go-to round for pests in the yard. They are quieter than many pellet guns but don't cycle most bolts meaning semi-autos effectively become repeaters.

I've also tried the SV, HV, and target with good results.

The only problem I have had with any Aguila ammo is that my NAA Mini Mag cylinder jams after two or three shots of their .22 WMR, but other than that I have been very satisfied with Aguila's rimfire offerings.

I have no problems with Aguila and will gladly shoot it if I can't get my hands on my preferred CCI ammo, at least in terms of their standard velocity "blue box" and high velocity "gold box" Aguila ammo. Their specialty ammo like Interceptor or Supermaximum (their version of Velocitor and Stinger) I would not choose over their competition because I feel whatever CCI, Winchester, or Remington makes shoots better or is priced better.

I find Eley to be top notch.
I have used a short ton of Armscor with great success.
I have had no problems with Aguila either.
I haven’t used Thundercraps in years.
And, though I prefer CCI, I only had four of these out of eleven hundred Winchesters. That’s not green dot. Their primer cake is lime green, and broken as well...

I like the shape of the Winchester hollow points.

My last case was Aguila standard velocity, which is slightly faster than normal. I hope that doesn’t mean much, I have a form out.:)

Trying to stick with standard velocity type ammo so I’m not decapitating squirrel or making messy body shots. I also like it Incase I miss it’s not going miles away. It also seems to shoot more accurately. Cci subs and standard shoot same poi for me out of both guns and hold good groups just can’t find any. If the deal is good I may get the Aguila but if within say $10 difference I may just get Eley

Every 22 shooter should have a lever action rifle and/or a revolver. Then their is no such thing as junk ammo ;)

Over the years of shooting a wide variety of 22lr on all my different rifles, I am now concentrating only on 3 brands of ammo. They are cci, aguila, and wolf match or match extra. For me the reasons for this choice are the following. Accuracy on all my rifles, reliability, and budget. These brands meet my criteria. Is there better ammo out there definitely but as I am not a competitor I refuse to buy a box of rimfire ammo for what the price of centerfire costs, just not worth it to me, unless I am carrying a 22lr gun for SD as a bug than I would pay extra for the reliably of a good rimfire round.

As someone has pointed out, Eley has several offerings at different price points.
I've had zero problems with Eley, though I've never run the subsonic (I don't shoot anything with a suppressor on it). Check out the Eley Action round. Killough Shooting Sports out of Texas, a wholly owned subsidiary of Eley, has it for 16.50 per 300. It's a 40 grain RLN at 1090 fps. My rifles like it quite a bit. Eley's Club round perfectly nice for matches out to 50 yards, IMO.
Re Aguila, I think it's great stuff for the price. Their HV and SV are my backups to CCI MiniMag and CCI SV And when you can find the Aguila, it's not expensive.
Re targets, my experience with 10/22s and a CZ 457 ... out to 50 yards, any decent ammo will hold a decent group in my rifles, though the premiums often will produce the really little groups. Beyond 50, it becomes a quest for what the rifle truly well likes, IMO.
I was not surprised just yesterday to find out my CZ 457 apparently adores Lapua' Center-X. Figures, the stuff runs about 12 bucks per 50. Can't afford a case of that, so purchases will be a brick or two at a time.

Aguila has been pretty decent ammo for me. Price is generally good.
My Mossberg M-44 loves the high velocity best over all the other brands I've run through it.
The Nylon66 likes plain PMC best.
The Colt Target pistol really likes Remmy Golden, but will happily digest Super-Vels
None of my .22s have shown a huge improvement using Eley; but none were much hampered by it either.

Really, though, getting back to OP, I've only ever run subsonic in the Colt pistol and the Mossberg. They held decent enough groups, if off POA. Something that could be doped out for use.

But, I've never seen two .22lr, even identical ones sequentially off the production line, use just one ammo better or worse. I find you have to always just keep shooting varieties until you find the combo that your 22 likes best.

I shoot a lot of the Aguila super extra standard velocity. A few years back when I couldn't find my usual CCI standard I bought a case of the Aguila standard velocity. It shot just as well in most rifles for me and was cheaper too. I still like the CCI but I'm fine with either one and use the Aguila equivalent just as much.

The comments on the smell are true, smells like some sort of glue.
