I'm only 14 so I definitely don't carry (DUH!). I was wondering if you guys that do carry ever found yourself in a bad situation where you didn't have a gun, pepper spray, knife, etc? How did you respond?

Leave rapidly. If you can't leave, look around. There are weapons everywhere, some just not so obvious.

Hand full of dirt? :)

Yep

I responded by using the training I had received.

Allow me to share something, as we seem to have a lot of new folks recently asking similar questions.

I was born in the 1950's and into a high risk setting. From the time I was born there was a bulls eye on my back. Pretty simple, kidnap the kid ( me) and force others to do what bad guys wanted.

There was no 911, or much of a lot of what folks today speak of, still somehow I and those whom taught me, and refer respectfully as Mentors & Elders survived, including this work.

My brain was trained first, and was always the first thing trained even when using guns, knives, canes or anything else. I had a knack(s) and kids just seem to sense things anyway. So basically I learned to "read the room".

Age 14? Oh yeah, I had evil in my life before age 14. For example I did exactly as taught at age 4. I let others know, then evaded to a safe spot. This was a practiced drill and I done it when the time came to. Evil failed, Good Guys prevailed.

Now what little I have, I do not refer to as training. Just me, and for respect for those whom have had training, and for those that do teach and share, like SouthNarc, Givens, Awerbuck, Rogers, Ayoob and others. Mentors & Elders shared, and my lessons were private and I call them "set ups and lessons".

The truth of the matter is, there are correct basic fundamentals to most things in life, be it shooting or staying safe. Oh we progress on these correct basic fundamentals, still the truth is, when we mess up, or have a bad day, or whatever, it always gets back to the fact we messed up one, or more of the correct basic fundamentals.

While I was born with guns, and knives in my crib, I was first taught to use my brain and knacks and trust my gut. It was said then, and still said today: Not everything defaults to gun.

I started with handguns at age 3, rifles at 4 and shotguns at age 5. We did not have conceal carry permits back then, but, Mentors carried, folks in general did. In fact "me and mine" were told by Judges, and Law Enforcement we would be damn fools if we did not. So after proving myself, and other reasons, in the third grade I got my first "conceal carry" gun. Oh I had guns, but this one fit a kid my size just right for concealment.

Still and before I had mindset, skill sets, and knew this all came before tool sets.
I learned early the difference in expedient and improvised weapons, if the need be. The rule was, and still is: Don't go where trouble is, leave if trouble shows up, and if you can't and have to deal with evil, have the mindset, skill set to use whatever tool set you have.

For instance-
I am a wittle boy, and while some saw a No 2 pencil, I knew a lot more about what that pencil could do. I was taught what to do, if grabbed, and had that pencil in my pocket. Or if the bad guy had a pencil in his.

Granted one was not dressed without a pocket knife back then, and I too knew what a small piece of steel could do.

Now I get bigger, and times change, and one cannot carry a gun, or knife in some places. Lessons coming up have stopped threats. For instance, leaving a gov't building, where one cannot carry, and bad guys came out of behind vehicles in the parking lot- armed with gun or knife...
I snapped off a vehicle antenna and used it, to stop what needed stopping against three young punks.

Thank goodness I come up before The Great Equipment Race. Still some still think, and I guess there will always be those that feel they can buy skill and targets.

The cemetery is full of dead hero's and those thinking what they bought would keep evil away, or deal with evil magically.

Get the correct basic fundamentals in anything, and I suggest training the brain first.

Exact same thing I would do if I did have a gun, pepper spreay, knife, etc.

Avoid. Run away. Call 911. And, if I have no choice, fight using whatever's available until the attack is over or until I can't fight anymore.

With or without weapons, situational awareness (and the early exit it provides) are your best defenses. You should NOT be "more relaxed" if you're armed than if you're not.

Now, the fact that I've never found myself in a bad situation unarmed (or armed), because I've left several situations that looked like they might be turning bad...

Does that count toward your question? :scrutiny:

I attended an out-of-state conference in Norfolk, VA in 1984 and all was well until I decided that it was ludicrous to pay $2 for a can of soda at the hotel. I asked the bell hop if there was a place where I could purchase a six-pack of soda and he told me that there was a Walgreens about 10 blocks away.

Off I went with nothing more than a cocky attitude. About 8 blocks in I realized that many of the buildings were boarded up, and that I looked suspiciously out of place. Paying for the soda with a $20 bill was not the brightest move either, especially in a place where most transactions were in food stamps.

The walk back to the hotel had me on edge, and I did not breathe a sigh of relief until I entered the lobby. The bell hop appeared a bit surprised that I had returned in one piece and so did I.

Never again. In similar circumstances, unarmed and in a strange place, I will gladly pay $2 (or more) for a hotel soda.

if you can't carry a gun , carry a knife , if you can't carry a knife carry pepper spray , because to quote the romans "amongst other bad things being unarmed brings you , it also causes you to be despised"

I've been in several situations and my best weapon was my mind. Sounds corny but it's true and it's gotten me out of several situations. Thinking clearly, don't panic, having situational awareness, seeing things before they happen, having a game plan already mapped out, if possible, hanging out with the right people, thinking for myself and not letting peer pressure get me in trouble, staying away from drugs, etc...

As was said in the movie The Octagon (with Chuck Norris), "Only the body sleeps not the mind."

I try to not assume because I have a gun it is "just fine" for me to go somewhere I shouldn't go anyway. Always think, think more when you have a gun and are old enough to carry. A gun can get you in trouble just as quickly as it can get you out of trouble. Most problems I have had where I wish I had a firearm I did not; most of the reason I carry now. I live in St. Louis City, year after year, we are ranked high in murders. I believe in Avoid, Escape, Deter, Engage. I always remind myself to stay calm and relax. I carry a legal gun to protect myself and family against illegal guns. I agree one thousand percent with "use your mind." Besides, you are fourteen, enjoy that. LOL.

I choose where I go without a gun very carefully. I ALWAYS have a knife on me. Situation awareness is formost in my mind, also the wife's. I never give it a thought to carry pepper spray, mace, etc. If you need to defend yourself, you need to defend yourself. Actions need to be automatic. If you need to think about what you are going to do, you lose.....chris3

I have 4 words for you:

Heavy brass belt buckle

All through high school and college I wore a heavy oval brass "Colt" belt buckle. I never had to use it as a weapon, swung at the end of my belt, but I was prepared and perfectly willing to do so.

Bad situations don't invoke the need to carry.

Life threatening situations however, do.

So to answer the question, it doesn't matter.

Absolutely yes and unfortunately more than once.
Fought my way out twice and ran like hell another time.

Really of no help to this thread, but it reminds me of what I'm told was an oft used quote by the grandfather I never who passed while I was young (he raised himself on the docks of Galveston in the 20's-30's).

"The things you see when you're out without your gun..."

I've had the misfortune to have been in 3 "bad situations"and I've never drawn a weapon yet. Most of the time if you're minding your own business and you've made the effort to avoid problem areas and people bad situations spring up so fast you may not have time to use anything other than your body and wits.
