Some of the best and most reasonable ammo you can get is police surplus and over runs. Usually it comes in boxes of 50 for the price you’d normally pay for 20 to 25 rounds of civilian packaged premium defense ammo. I’ve got some of the best accuracy from Winchester Ranger SXT police surplus ammo. You have to watch +P+ ammo as it may seize in the chamber of some pistols if they’re a little dirty or rough. Whatever you get you need to try it out. You certainly don’t need to shoot premium ammo for practice once you’ve convinced yourself that it feeds reliably in your handgun. Practice with the inexpensive FMJ’s and carry the JHP’s.
Over the years I’ve always picked up a box or two of premium ammo in the various caliber I own for carry purposes when I can find it at a good price. I have on the shelf and in magazines a good variety including Hydrashoks, EFMJ, Gold Dots, Ranger SXT, Black Talons, SXT, Starfire, Guardian Gold, Glassers, Golden Sabers and Silver Tips. I’m comfortable carrying any of these for defense.
