Asked me if I had knowledge of anyone acting suspiciously with regards to firearms. He said it was a general investigative program out of DC where they talk to folks at random to see if anyone might be planning domestic terrorism. Added that people "involved with guns" get picked randomly for questioning and "my name came up this year."

Say what?

I told him I had no personal knowledge or information about anyone involved in illegal activities and if I did I would certainly notify law enforcement immediately.

I am guessing I was contacted because of my C&R license. Anyone else had something like this happen? Recall it was the FBI and not the ATF.

That sounds bizarre. Did you call the local FBI branch (or field office, department, not sure what they call it) and verify that this man is actually following some guideline?

I'm also curious why someone would show up and say "I'm with the FBI, are you a criminal?" If they are, they aren't going to tell you!

You may want to make an inquiry with the FBI to find out if this guy is legit. He may be casing the neighborhood for gun owners.

Did you check his badge and identification?

I won't talk to official figures without at least some proof that they are, who they say they are.

Anyone can wear a suit.

Call local law enforcement and FBI as well definitely. At the least if it's legit the calls they get might hint to them that this is a stupid approach, glad my tax dollars are going to this guy/guys going door to door asking 'any terrorists in here?'

+1 on checking identification as well.

Something isn't right about this. Were you shown a badge and identification? Hell, if someone tells me they are from the gas company I expect to see ID, let alone the FBI or any government agency. This smacks of something very wrong. I would be on the phone to the FBI in a heartbeat.

If such an 'agent' comes to your door, ask for his ID, badge number, and then call the local FBI office to verify they are who they say they are.

And then if all checks out, tell them about the OWS crowd and how nutso they are.

This most definately needs to be reported to the police and to the news media. Years ago when I was working parole we had a parolee that was going around flashing a gold badge claiming to be a FBI agent. The FBI contacted me wanting help with catching this guy as they had no sense of humor about this sort of thing.

Showed me an ID that looked OK as far as I can tell. Posted this on another forum and a member replied that he had the same exact thing happen to him a year ago. Got the same flier I was handed with the FBI logo at the top and a list of suspicious activities and persons to be on the lookout for.

I don't doubt he was legit.

That is certainly passing strange.

Any indication if this is limited to any specific state(s)?

That is very unusual. I had a similar instance at college when 2 ATF agents came to talk to me because I was "flagged" when I filled out three 4473s in one day for .45ACP handguns. The handguns are limited edition commemorative weapons that I had proof pictures of. Very short conversation thankfully.

Definitely worth checking in with the local field office. Even if you didn't catch his name/badge number, LEOs even at the federal level have strict procedures to follow. If they stopped at your house (legit) then there is a note about it somewhere.

Don't ever talk to these or any other "officials" without a lawyer present, and then they must present some form of a warrant. I'd call 9-1-1 and ask for a local officer/deputy to come over just in case. Surely, if anything such as this were to be legit, the "FBI" or "ATF" would have notified local law enforcement and possibly the local district attorney's office that they would be "knocking on doors", etc.

These guys should have more than enough to do rather than go on fishing expeditions.

Wow seems pretty strange to me. Let us know if you confirm it was legit. Not sure if that would bother me more or less!

If he was legit, I bet some of your gun buddies is under some sort of investigation. They might be trying to connect dots.

You should have got his badge number at the very least and immediately called the local FBI office. I would have first said, What makes you think I have any guns?" Then depending on his response I would have asked to see his badge number and asked if I could take a picture of his badge and him. Next, I would have asked if he could come back by after I check to make sure he is who he says he is and only then would I answer any questions. You are not obligated to answer anything without them going through the proper channels, end of story. That whole thing despite you buddy going through it a year ago, seems really strange.

Yeah, fishing expedition does not sound likely.

Think back carefully to everything he said.

Gotta be something in there.

You aren't running an open wireless AP, are you? ;)

The whole thing sounds extremely suspicious. I would get a lawyer.

Folks, when someone comes asking for information you don't have to give it to them. You don't even have to talk to them. Just get their information and lawyer up. The feds don't do random.

Did he happen to hand you something which he then took back from you? Perhaps something with an oddly sticky surface?

What would that cost?

Far less than 5-10, brotha ;-)

Here's the document he gave me. Seems to be directed at dealers. I have a C&R and I wonder if somebody misunderstood and thought I was an 003 dealer?

PS: I didn't give him any info other than to say I knew nothing. As for legal representation, I am sleeping with my lawyer so that's not far away. :what:
