FBI agent came to my door, today.

Surely you jest.

My understanding is that this is not at all uncommon. It is considered a professional courtesy and can come in real handy if, say, OP calls his local police department and asks about "Agent Smith".

Most LEAs and LEOs will take something like this at least semi seriously because, unfortunately, many criminals are not above pretending to be agents/officers/etc in order to gain access into people's homes to commit acts that would probably get me banned from THR if I typed them out. Or simply to case homes for later burglary.

A simple call to local LE (or the local office of the department in question) for verification purposes is totally reasonable.

SaxonPig would you mind logging in and posting here a couple of times a day for a couple of weeks so that we all know you're still around?

You should have got his badge number at the very least and immediately called the local FBI office. I would have first said, What makes you think I have any guns?" Then depending on his response I would have asked to see his badge number and asked if I could take a picture of his badge and him. Next, I would have asked if he could come back by after I check to make sure he is who he says he is and only then would I answer any questions. You are not obligated to answer anything without them going through the proper channels, end of story. That whole thing despite you buddy going through it a year ago, seems really strange.
For what it's worth, I doubt very much that any legit FB I agent or any other government official will let you take a picture of his ID. Where I work we are not allowed to make any duplicates of our IDs. We can't even have our pictures taken by the base photographer unless our IDs are put away.

It's probably linked to internet usage.

Nice one ;):D The walls have ears (especially around gun forums, I'm sure...)

Have you been posting around here recently using any Homeland Security no-no words such as: REDACTED

TCB

.And when agents question anyone there are always at least 2. So either this was what he said it was, or a poser. If it was any more there would be a second agent to whitness any statements you made. If you haven't done anything then don't give it any thought, if they come back, you know what to do. There may be an investigation of someone you know or had dealings with in the past. Or you triggered a flag. Right now it's nothing IMHO. Also they may want to see your reaction to the visit to help them determine if they need to spend any more time on this. If so you just acted as someone would who was concerned, and asked others what they thought, fairly normal reaction.
As far as a waste of manpower goes, the Feds will spend a million dollars prosecuting a ten dollar case, so never think that they won't bother, they will, and do every day, and their conviction rate is in the high 90's, they make dam sure that they lay all the groundwork before acting.

The level of paranoia is amazing.

I still think they contact was intended for dealers and I got on the list by mistake. Or maybe they contact some C&R holders, too.

I am really not aware of anything I have done that would be illegal.

I don't really have any friends they could be investigating. Seriously, there is nobody I pal around with in my home town.

As for activity, I think I purchased 5 guns this year using my C&R and 4 were from FFL dealers and all was on the up and up as far as I know.

If I wind up indicted or murdered I'll let someone know to notify the Board.

In my experience Onward Allusion gave the most succinct and true opinion on this board. How ever with the admin we have in office I would not be surprised with the "lottery" vetting as a make a job (or 3 as the prolly have a person to mine the internet traffic) and Saxon Pig is a large target.;)
I really don't have a problem with a little face to face vetting of fire arms dealers and that is why I do not have a C&R . I might be wearing a Republican button and get on the wrong list!
Please keep us posted but I don't think you'll be hearing anymore so relax!

This... I think its time to purchase stock in Reynolds Group.

Hes got a C&R License he will get visits from feds, goes with the territory...

Yep, I know this and understand this and that was partly my reason for posting that. If he had let you easily taken a photograph of it, then you would kind of think twice about this already. So, that would be a flag and if he did not let you take any information about him at all or wait while you called to check him out then another red flag. if he did the latter then I would not speak at all even if you did not have anything to hide. I am always up front with people but I am also overly cautious about things just like this. I am sorry man it could be nothing or it could be something. I could probably come up with a badge/ID fairly easily and could replicate that form even easier. So, just because someone has that does not mean it is legit.

I am convinced that this is part of a vast government conspiracy. First the CMP refuses to give Saxon-Pig a good M1 (they gave a nice of to everyone else) Now the FBI has these unusual questions. It's no coincidence I say. I hate to think what they will do next. :D

"I'd be happy to talk to you, Agent X. Do you mind waiting while I contact the local LEO, just to verify that you are, indeed, who you say you are? Would you like a glass of Lemonade while you wait out here on the porch?"

why would you even consider letting them in at all?

This is so strange I would call it bizarre. I would have vetted him as several others suggested. If he is who he says he is and the FBI had such a program I think that I would listen to his questions and probbably answer them. naturally I would have a few questions of my own.

What would that cost?
A lawyer is almost always cheaper BEFORE you get indicted.

Of course invoking your 5th Amendment rights frequently terminates a fishing expedition.

It did the last time police wanted to talk to me.

Should I link you to a source documenting what our public servants did to people at Waco? Or Ruby Ridge?
Never mind that. Just look at what happened to Richard Jewell and the researcher in the anthrax case.

Keep your mouth shut without benefit of counsel.

More of our tax dollars at work. I'm wondering, if this is a regular practice, just how much time is wasted, if you talley up all the agents around the country doing this. I really do hope they have something more important to do.

I have had several occasions when the FBI showed up at my door and it is always two agents and they made a very big deal of showing badges and IDs and they had a better line of crap than what they told you.

I agree, if you are not doing anything wrong I would not lose sleep over it
