Okay, I was in Walmart tonight and saw 115gr Federal range ammo for less than $12 with tax. Is this stuff reliable and reasonably clean? I know their cheap 22LR stuff made me :cuss:

Since I'm going to be breaking in a new CZ P-07 this week I was thinking of getting a box each of 115gr, 124gr, and 147gr to find out which the gun likes. Is the Federal ammo good for this? Will it function or will it skew my early impressions of the gun?

I pick the gun up on Thursday. I'm going to take it over to my dad's house to clean and lube the gun. He's going through radiation and chemo. He can't go to our regular shooting spot right now. So, I figured it would be cool to get his help.

Friday, I take it out to break it in. I'm hoping to get either 68 or 100 rounds through the gun.

Federal makes quality ammo. While every gun has its idiosyncrasies, I have no reason to doubt it would feed and fire Federal ammo. Why would it be unreliable? Inexpensive doesn't always equate to "cheap". Then again, their rimfire ammo has been nothing but good to me, with their 550 bulk packs routinely producing one hole groups at 50 yards for me, day in and day out. I'm a fan of federal ammo, but every gun is a world unto itself, and just becasue my weapons eat it up and spit it out, theres no promise it will do the same in yours. Your best bet to see if a particular load is reliable is to shoot it....all the internet advice in the world cannot determine how YOUR firearm likes a certain sort of ammo

Buy one(1) box and shoot 'em.
If they work then you are ok.
Where and what you buy is both a personal choice and a product of your past experiences.
You won't ever know unless you try 'em all.

I buy a lot of Remington & Winchester ammo at Walmart and I have never had any problems with it. (and I am a picky old man.. I am anal about my guns).

Ammo is ammo when you are going to the range and getting in some practice.
Unless you are looking for "Special Purpose" ammo then Walmart is as good as any place else to grab some Ice Cream and Ammo....after you shoot a few 2in groups you can celebrate with the Ice Cream.

Walmart IS the home of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms after 5pm in many locations.

I never had any problems with it in my CZ...or any of my guns for that matter. Went bang everytime and I hit what I was aiming at.

I buy it all the time never had any trouble with it but i would buy one box and shoot it cz most likely sent u papers say what kind to shoot . Some guns dont like some brands . but have fun

It'll work the slide and is decent for range use....price is right! Some Wal Marts sell Dynamit-Nobel crazy cheap and I believe it is loaded to NATO specification. If you can lay hands on it try some it works very good in my 9's. Federal ammo is value priced and reliable and it seems to shoot clean. Good shooting!

That's all I use for plinking with my Glock...no problems whatsoever. Cheapest brass ammo I can find

Many boxes of Federal Champ and WWB from Walmart.... never an issue through my Glocks.

I've gone through at least a couple thousand Fed from WM, all has worked well in all my 9mm pistols and carbine. Go cheap!

I have shot federal ammo for years . The blue box special is actually pretty good stuff in centerfire rifles. Have used in my 243. 270. 308 . 30-06 and 45-70govt and never had any problems with it for accuracy or hunting purposes. it's not the hottest loaded ammo on the market but its well worth the price and does fantastic for hunting situations. use to be a big winchester man with my 270. and the cheap walmart blue box ammo for my 270. drops deer every bit as good as my $40 box of winchesters. Only problem i have ever had with federal ammo is their bulk 22 ammo. every now and then i would get one that would missfire. it didn't happen often but it did happen. if your plinking or shooting squirrels , this still shouldn't be a problem

Federal Champion is good range ammo at a reasonable price, especially from Walmart. It's not my favorite range ammo but I've used it and it works just like it should. As for being clean or dirty...well, it's all dirty after 100 rounds or so. Give it a try.

Federal Champion 9mm from Walmart feeds fine in my XD9, and I've shot boxes of it without any issues. Also have had good results with the Remington 9mm ammo they stock from time to time.

Sorry to hear about your problem with Federal bulk 22 rimfire from Walmart. It is reliable in my Ruger 22/45. I have lost count of how many boxes of that ammo I have sent down range.

I have a couple thousand rounds of that stuff in 9mm, 40 S&W, 45 ACP, and 38 Spl the basement and have shot a lot more with no problems. I think it is fine for general use and it is typically what I use when using factory loads.

Now, in regards to that 22 LR ammo, I run across the same problems as you with misfires on occasion. It happens with every brand when it is packed into "milk cartons" and not in inidividual holders. I feel it is a transortation issue as the primer gets knocked out of the rim during shipping and handling. The jarring of travel and then whatever process the ammo goes through from end of manufacture to when it gets fired may all conspire to loosen the priming compound which can cause ignition issues. I find that I can change the position of the round in the chamber and it will fire almost every time. I think I have a half dozen rounds which would not fire after multiple attempts laying around but that is by far not the norm.

I've shot several hundred rounds of it and never had a single issue with it. Not only for handguns, but I tend to use the cheap Federal hunting ammo in my rifles during deer season too. No issues there either. The stuff works well. The pistol ammo makes holes just as well as anything else, the rifle stuff knocks the deer just as dead as a Hot Bonded Core Super Trophy Bear Claw Shock Hollow Point Premium XL bullet.

i love how cheap the Fed 115gr is at Wal-Mart. I get the 100rd packs for $19, and the 525rd 22LR for my remington 552. It loves them.

No problems with it in Glock 26 or PF-9.
My batch clocked in at 1047 fps from the G26. Kind of low compared to Winchester white box at 1124.
Rem MC was 1068, Monarch 1021, and that completes the Walmart 115gr shootout of ammo I had on hand.

It works fine for practice fodder. I have around 800 rounds of the very same stuff from the very same place sitting in the garage. I've ran about 1000 rounds of it through my glocks with zero issues. I haven't noticed if it is particularly dirty or not. I normally shoot a few hundred per session, so it is always dirty no matter what ammo I use.

It was priced locally at my walmart for the same prices I could get it online, so I just bought it at the store. I've looked around at all the major sites I know of and that I've seen recommended here. I just couldn't beat walmart's price without resorting to steel cased stuff. I'm apparently the only one who buys bulk at my walmart because the clerk looked at me like I was crazy.

MikeNice:
My prayers go out to your dad.
I hope he recovers soon.

I've never had issues with Federal ammunition except the 22lr.
(but my Beretta Bobcat has issues with almost all 22 ammo)

I've shot Federal 38spl, 357 mag, 9mm, 45 Colt & 22lr in my Marlin without issues.
And next week I'll add 45 ACP to that list.

I've used the same boxes in 9mm many times, and it generally has been fine. On my last range outing one of the federal rounds had no powder and the bullet was poorly seated, throwing the bullet partially into the barrel when chambered.

I shoot better and it shoots pretty reliable. It's usually the cheapest I can get locally.

I pick mine up at wallys also, Federal and WWB and no problem with either for practice and use on animals around the house.
