In order to "stimulate the economy" I am planning a gun purchase as soon as my FOID is renewed. I was going for a Ruger 77.... but now a SIG P220ST is looking VERY tempting.

So anyways, I have been researching these guns, looking for a good deal, and my last step was to contact the nearest dealer. He informed me that he wont participate in a transfer if the gun is one he could get for me himself. I informed him that the P220ST may not be in production anymore... but he said that even if this fact was true, he only "might tansfer it for me".

He also told me that when I sell my Taurus M605, he wont ship it for me.

I am royally steamed.

The only other dealer in my area, who is actually has a store (some are just guys with guns in a shed... who you can never get a hold of) is a long drive away.

I guess we do have a Dick's sporting goods... maybe they can do it. :) I will have to call.

Highly unlikely Dicks will do it. Every one I've been to sells long guns only and they do not do transfers. They are just a general sporting goods store that happens to sell guns really.

Good luck getting it sorted out!

Eh, that's his perogative. It's also your perogative to spend your money elsewere. Assuming you are near 62901, Gunbroker's FFL list shows 10 FFL holders within 30 miles.

I've found that more and more FFL dealers are pulling dick manuevers. If they keep it up as a whole, somebody's going to litigate and force some government-ran industry standards. Don’t get mad at me for saying it. We all know that's how America operates.

are you a member of a range?

the only dealer i have intown that will do an ffl transfer charges 50 bucks then the owner of my range said he does them for 15 for memebers and 25 for non members

Wow... that sounds like a good deal. Range + cheap transfers :).

We do have a range... but I cannot afford both guns AND range fees at the moment since I am just a student. So i am stuck with dealers... but i might call the range and see what they can do.

Sounds like a short sighted, arrogant fool who thinks his piece of paper is extra special. Unfortunately, in restricive places like Illinois (Maryland, etc.) many gun shops perpetuate the myth that guns have to be expensive, are "rare", and we are all very flippin' lucky they're willing to let you in the door to experience their extensive (ha!), overpriced, inventory and their "value added" services.

Steps to take-

Take all your business to a guy who will do transfers for a reasonable (I pay $15 and $20 at my regular places). BUY AMMO, etc when you pick up your gun. Buy guns local if the price is reasonable (example - Glocks at $500 or less- $589 is foolish). In short, be a good and loyal customer.

Tell everybody you know to go to the shop, and why. Help them build their business.

Tell everybody you know to boycott the jerk.

Rant over.

DO NOT spend more than $20 for an FFL transfer. Anyone charging more is just scamming money. Lets face it, some pretty shady characters are entering the FFL transfer process and my advice is to not support them so they go away. If you want to find an FFL dealer in your area go here;

http://www.gunslive.com/dealerlocator/

Ask them #1 what they charge; #2 if they will do non-FFL (private owner) to FFL transfer and #3 when they are available. These are

Because in all actuality anyone can 'justify' rational to someone else, but it boils down to the rule that friends dont let friends get scammed.

Hope this helps.

:)

When i first started buying guns on the internet, I too at first had a problem finding ffls to do a transfer(reasonably). Found one guy $50, found another $15 but wanted to collect sales tax, even though he wasnt selling the gun and the receipt was made out to me. Finally found a pawn shop right down the road that does them for $20. Now I cant find one to ship a gun reasonably, my local range charges $40 plus actual shipping, and they will only ship FEDEX Priority Overnight. I informed him that he could use USPS, and he told me that would be breaking the law. The pawn shop I do my transfers through only charges $20 plus actual shipping, they too refuse to send through the post office, even though no fewer than 5 guns I have bought have been sent to them priority mail. And refuse to hear that they can send it any other way than overnight. Some of these FFL's definately have their heads up their asses.

I don't really blame my local gun store for not wanting to enhance my ability to spend money with someone else. It's common sense. When I can, I buy from them, and the price is usually close. Supporting your local gun shop is not necessarily a bad thing. I do have a "in the shed" FFL who does transfers for me for $10. When I have to use the gun store, I just pay their price; they don't have to do it. I know in my business, I set the rules; I expect other businesses to set their rules according to their own expectations. If I don't like it, I can go somewhere else. Nothing to get mad about.

Fedex and UPS will only ship overnight due to employee theft. And you don't have to have an FFL to ship there, you just have to be shipping to an FFL. No reason to pay someone $20.

In Cali, the cheapest fees are about $50 FFL fee + $25 Cali DROS fee + Tax (if online out of state). So, you can't get a firearm without paying at least $75 in total fees. It's like all the FFL dealers are in some some sort of agreement to fix prices.

Sounds like a short sighted, arrogant fool…

Indeed – my FFL says he’ll transfer as many guns as I want. He says it’s a ‘quick and easy 20 bucks.’ More importantly he has my good will and I’ll be a loyal customer when it’s time for a new gun.

I used the link Javelin provided and it showed more around here than I realized would do a transfer, but it did not show "Redland Wholesale and Safe" where I do buisness. They do transfers for $20 and if it's two at the same time, it's still $20. They are good to deal with.

Here in Central Florida the overwhelming majority of gun dealers will NOT do ANY transfers anymore, or charge outragous fees ($100 typical) to deswade you. The one dealer I use will not transfer anything he can order, and loves to give you the third degree because he is doing you such a favor.

I can hardly wait for the Anti's to stop my right to sell directly to other state residents. That effectively make the gun shows effectively a dealer monopoly and I will never go to another.

(Most) FFL are not our friends and I feel they will support any (Anti) legislation that will reduce their compitition! Plus, this FFL 'Tax' helps the Anti's gun control cause by making them more expensive. Top that off that Klinton helped eliminate so many kitchen table FFL's (can't wait for what the Mrs. will do) that they are basically a government created monopoly.

I have heard that many pawn shops will do transfers, but I have not located one yet.

somebody's going to litigate and force some government-ran industry

Is it just me or would this be a good gun-law? (Just saying)

There are dealers here In MI that charge sales tax on the value of the gun you are transferring, oh wait, the ATF said that was illegal(?).

In Cali, the cheapest fees are about $50 FFL fee + $25 Cali DROS fee + Tax (if online out of state). So, you can't get a firearm without paying at least $75 in total fees. It's like all the FFL dealers are in some some sort of agreement to fix prices.

Actually state law limits the transfer fee to $35, but if you're having a gun shipped in a lot of dealers skirt that by charging a "receiving fee" which is entirely unregulated.

It's a shame really, there are great gun deals online, but by the time you pay for all the associated BS, you may as well have bought it locally.

$35 is only for Private Party Transfers (aka Face to Face). There is no limit on what a FFL can charge for doing an out of state transfer.
