Hobbled Background Checks: The bill would make it extremely difficult for the federal government to prevent criminals and terrorists from obtaining legal status. Under Section 601(h)(1), the bill would allow the government only one business day to conduct a background check to determine whether an applicant is a criminal or terrorist. Unless the government can find a reason not to grant it by the end of the next business day after the alien applies, the alien receives a probationary Z visa (good from the time of approval until six months after the date Z visas begin to be approved, however long that may be) that lets him roam throughout the country and seek employment legally.

Amnesty for Gang Members: Under Section 601(g)(2) of the bill, gang members would be eligible to receive amnesty. This comes at a time when violent international gangs, such as Mara Salvatrucha 13 (or "MS-13"), have brought mayhem to U.S. cities. More than 30,000 illegal-alien gang members operate in 33 states, trafficking in drugs, arms, and people. Deporting illegal-alien gang members has been a top ICE priority. The Senate bill would end that. To qualify for amnesty, all a gang member would need to do is note his gang membership and sign a "renunciation of gang affiliation."

Thank the status quo (i.e., "conservative") GOP and Democrat Congress and your president for this garbage.

To Hades with the website. Read for comprehension. It's not that difficult. This information can be found on other sites and this site is not the source of the documentation. But you knew this.

I hadn't realized that so many gang members were keen to get legal in different aspects of their lives. Maybe we need a public service campaign informing them of the illegality of drugs and violence. We could solve the gang problem right there and then. :neener:

For the third time today, the .gov has caused me to spit beverages and say "WHAT THE %#$*!!!"

We should retitle the 'Legal & Political' forum to 'Stupidity we've got to deal with today'

I think we've stumbled into that dystopian future we all heard about...

but...but... they signed their "renunciation of gang affiliation" card!!!

Coming to a town near you under future amnesty:

Deaths of Mexican soldiers increase after drug clampdown

Carlos Martinez and Sam Enriquez, Los Angeles Times

MEXICO CITY - The number of Mexican soldiers slain has jumped dramatically since President Felipe Calderon began using the army to battle drug traffickers, records show.

Since December, when Calderon began the campaign, 89 soldiers have been reported killed compared with fewer than a dozen from January through November of 2006, according to army records provided to the Los Angeles Times.

The escalation of attacks on soldiers has come as 12,700 of them man roadside checkpoints and patrol cities in nine Mexican states where rival drug gangs battle for control of ports, roads and other smuggling routes.

The Mexican army reported 27 of the killings since December were of soldiers on duty; 37 were killed off-duty, and the circumstances of 25 deaths remain under investigation.

Calderon dispatched the army, along with several thousand federal police officers after taking office because of concerns that incompetence and corruption had hampered local and state police and judges from combating well-financed drug gangs. More than 2,000 killings last year reportedly were drug-related.

The killings include an ambush of five men, including a colonel, in the state of Michoacan earlier this month. In April, the bodies of three soldiers were found with evidence of torture. A message next to the bodies said, "Whoever gets involved will die."

The soldier deaths are among more than 1,000 killings so far this year attributed to drug violence, according to tallies by Mexican newspapers. The government doesn't keep an official count.

Calderon's failure to slow the violence has drawn criticism from opposition parties, which have called on him to revise his military strategy. Calderon said Thursday during a speech in the state of Durango that he is not ready to change course.

"Organized crime wants to scare the Mexican people," Calderon said. "It wants to scare the Mexican people so that the government crosses its arms and they go unpunished. They want us to retreat. ... Our stance is clear: not a step backward."

Army salaries have gone up slightly, but pay for the lowest ranks begins at about $2,460 a year, plus room, board, uniforms and medical care. Generals are paid between $8,000 and $10,000 a year.

In 20 years, there won't be 50 United States.

COUNTRY------YEAR---POPULATION-----FIREARM HOMICIDE
----------------------------------------Number--Rate per 100,000

Mexico--------2000----103,457,000------5,529-----5.34

United States--2001----294,043,000-----10,130----3.45

Hmmmm.....doesn't Mexico have 100% gun control?

Colombia ------2000------44,222,000------21,898-----49.52
Venezuela-----2000------25,299,000-------5,408-----21.04
Brazil---------1998-----178,470,000------25,663-----14.38
Ecuador-------2000------13,003,000-------1,321-----10.16

I'm really seeing a problem south of the border.

Canada---------2003------31,629,700------161--------0.51

Hmmm....let's see....Canada has far tougher requirements to become a
citizen AND allows importation of semiautomatic weapons based on foreign
military assault rifles such as the Tavor (illegal in the USA)......Could amnesty
for illegal alien gang members possibly be the wrong kind of import for the USA?

Might Australia and England even have lower murder rates because of stable
populations on ISLANDS, ie, making it harder for people to randomly wander in?!

Kinda funny that the MD state government took 7 days to determine that I (a native-born citizen with no criminal record of any kind) wasn't a criminal or terrorist the last two times I bought guns. :banghead:

The Government plans to re-make the U.S. on the Iraq Model.

Actually Longeyes I expect we will bring most of the Iraq people here
when we withdraw from their country.

Question: Does anyone in DC have any common sense.:cuss:

No common sense in DC, common sense only exists on the individual level with people like us.

I say it's time we start throwing the illegals out of the country, send them to other foreign countries like Germany, China and Japan. I'm sick and tired of dealing with these idiot Mexicans. Get rid of them or start killing the ones that illegally cross the border, I'm sick of hearing about them.

The Europeans don't want them, they've had their own screwups by allowing so many muslims into their countries and they are about to pay the price. Japan doesn't have the room and China might be a bunch of Godless Communists but they ain't stupid and don't bow down to Political Correctness.;)

Who said anything about offering them? We're gonna deliver the Mexicans via airdrop in packing crates with air holes. Gonna mark 'em "Warning: Avoid contact with water - very aquatic and deceptive in nature"

TBL says:

I've been wondering about that myself. Perhaps stable populations are the key. I don't see an awful lot of folks trying to cross into Canada from the US. Perhaps this also explains the uptick in violent crime in UK and Europe, as well. As they recieve more and more integration-resistant immigrants into their countries, I expect their crime rates will continue to escalate.

I am not a fan of immigration amnesty. However, the problem is very, very large. I don;t know if there is any way to round up all the illegal immigrants within our borders. The best way I can see of dealing with them is to offer them a guest worker visa of some length, with a high tax rate on their earnings, coupled with permanently barring them from ever attaining US citizenship. That's the price of breaking imigration laws. Also, any company found hiring undocumented workers should be fined $1MM per worker.

Amnesty is BS. It will only encourage more illegal immigration.

Don't blame the conservatives for the GOP's Neo-Con (as in CON job) hijacking and sharp turn to the left. Some of us are still looking for a glimmer of Reagan conservatism to come back before we up and leave for a new party (Constitution, perhaps?).

This is the kind of mess that has destroyed the GOP....and the USA...

Redbecca: Are all Mexicans illegal immigrants? Or are all illegal immigrants Mexicans? What about the numerous other illegal immigrants? I notice you don't mention them? Is it something against hispanic people?

There is a way to round them up.Look up what Dwight Eisenhower did-it was called operation"wetback" back in the 50's.There's no reason the same can't be done today, other than the fact there's no one in washington with enough backbone.

I kind of had an implied question in my earlier post, but I'll ask it straight up here. Does anyone expect this part of the law to actually have any kind of effect? I can't imagine many gang members saying to themselves, "finally, a chance to get legal!"

This seems to be the flip side to feel good laws. It's a feel bad law. It feels bad to pass it, but it won't actually have any effect.

And no, advocating murder isn't High Road, but it's nowhere near the first time I've seen it on an immigration thread. Kinda sad.

Are all Mexicans illegal immigrants?

No, a good number of them went through the hassle of the paperwork and redtape to get legalized before crossing the border.

What about the numerous other illegal immigrants? I notice you don't mention them?

Point 'em out, the Mexican people are the ones who get so much airtime that it's easy to assume they're the only group that's coming into the country illegally.

Is it something against hispanic people?

Don't even go there...
