I'm looking for a new personal carry gun. I have to have Polymer, .45, and these two are in my price range. I like the length of barrel on the XD because it's 1/2'' shorter. However I don't like the grip safety. I don't like how the Glock doesn't have a safety at all besides the trigger. I also am partial to both the finger grooves and non-grooves. What are some pro's and cons? I found an XD with an external thumb safety as well. What should I get? I also like how the XD comes with holster and mag holsters for about $100 less. I might have to go shoot both and see what handles better

Thanks for your input!

I've got an XD 45 and I prefer it hands-down over the Glock 21. However, I also own a Glock 19 and it fits me far better than the XD 9 and it's my carry gun. Which feels better for you? That's what it really comes down to with these guns and the M&P as well. They're all about the same as far as reliability, accuracy, etc., so choose the one that feels best and you can shoot the best with.

If you go with the Glock you'll have far more options and accessories to choose from; and you'll, also, be able to kiss your gunsmith - or, for that matter - the factory, 'Goodbye'. :D

The Glock is going to be a, 'softer' shooter, too; and, if history is any judge, the G-21 is going to stand up better over the long haul, as well. (Just be sure to stay away from things like ambidextrous magazine releases and Picatinny rails. You'll be fine.)

Shot all 3 own one the XD. The M&P is a smooth shooting gun but the capacity is low. The sight picture is awkward for me on the Glock but other than that I have no complaints. I found the XD to be perfect for my needs as it holds 13, has a reliable time proven grip safety, and is quite accurate. As far as manual safties go they are worthles in my opinion on these type of pistols. Just don't pull the trigger and the gun won't go off. The Glock and XD triggers are designed to only be activated when fully covered and ample force is applied.

I'd recommend shooting both and see what works best for you.

Personally, I carry the 21 on duty and a lot CCW, especially in the cooler months. As far as no safety, I see it just as police departments across the land have, it works just like a S&W or Colt DA revolver - you pull the trigger it goes BANG. Carried in holster that covers the trigger guard ( revolver or Glock or XD ) you are in the same position - Very safe indeed.

I should also mention that the G21 I'm lookin at is Compensated from the factory and used. Talking about trading for my P14.45 1911

Mine's, also, well-used and ported (NOT, 'compensated') too -

I like my 1911 but I think I might want a nicer newer version than this P14 when I do buy one. So I should start my handgun collection over with a g21??

Nothing at the time. I simply purchased both of my G-21's outright. Since then, however, I have sold my Detonics 45; and two Colt, Series 70, Mark IV, Government Models. (For really, 'big money' too!) :D

Over the past 2 years I haven't missed any of them at all; and, I love being able to customize my own Glocks all by myself - Only 35 moving parts and very cool!

You have answered your own question.

All three are excellent examples of striker fired pistols. Which one you should buy should be based on which one works best for you.

I'd say go with the Glock or the MP. I prefer the MP but the XD's only a Glock copy in my opinion...might as well go with the original if that's what you're looking for.

One of the reasons I like glocks is that it is very easy to do a caliber conversion. With a barrel and mag swap you can convert the 21 to 10mm, 400 corbon, and 40 super.

www.lonewolfdist.com has about anything you can think of to customize a glock.

All three pistols you mention are good, and I don't think you would go wrong with any of them.

I have all 3; go with the XD, you will not be sorry. WRT the grip safety, what is your concern? That you won't have a firm grip on the gun when you are preparing to fire? In what similar situation do you expect the Glock or Smith to be preferable???

I have an XD45 Compact and I'm not biased at all... ;) IMHO: The XD's fully supported chamber, "conventional" grip angle, and grip safety make it the superior weapon. That said, figure out what points and shoots better for you and get it!

I went with the XD. Having conventional rifling was a big plus as I shoot LRN .45acp ammo a lot since that's what I reload in that caliber. If I went with the G21, I would have had to buy an aftermarket barrel, adding at least another 120 onto the cost.

Please explain I find the M&P to be more like a Glock than an XD.

You know, it's funny, as I'm kinda stuck between these two pistols myself, especially with the 21SF available, as the grip isn't much bigger than the XD.45.

However, I'm growing to be less and less a fan of the grip safety on the XD while at the same time wondering if the Glock is "safe" enough of a pistol to start with. This would be my first pistol, so I know if I train well with it and really get used to it then I'll be more comfortable with whatever model I have...yet I'm still stuck between the two. Perhaps if the XD had a longer track record it would seal the deal....dunno. Both are in my price range...

It's been around as the Croatian service pistol (HS2000) since the early 1990's, if I recall correctly.

Interesting....so the XD as we know it in it's Springfield incarnation is fundamentally the same as the HS2000?

Springfield bought the rights and marketed it hard here in the States. It was originally imported by someone else, I don't recall who. Wikipedia could help with some basic info I'm sure.
