I am seriously considering a Glock 21. I have owned & shot 1911s and 45 revolvers for years, but a good friend has a 21 he loves, and I am now infected. Anyone have any suggestions/observatons before I pull the trigger on the old credit card?
Thanks
Maj Dad

I owned a glock 30. I think it's a nice alternative to the full sized 21. It takes the 21 mags for HD or the range but is a bit more concealable than the 21 with its regular mag. The 30 was very accurate and easy to shoot. I never had a malfunction in thousands of rounds.

If you can handle its grip (the new "short frame" version is a little better) and don't mind the wide slide, it is a fine gun. I shot one belonging to a friend and it was reliable (even with his wife's less than secure grip) and soft shooting.

I love mine, I shoot limited with it. It is also the only centerfire handgun my wife (5'4" 120lbs) will shoot anymore and she has tried quite a few. Don't let the size intimidate you.

It is my bedside gun. And I've chosen it over a multitude of other options. I bought 30 round Kriss extended magazines (the Glock magazines that were made for the Kriss Personal Defense Weapon). They work well. And with that beside my bed, I sleep well at night.

I'm on my third and last Glock 21, selling previous ones to buy something I thought was cooler or better, but have always come back to it, I just shoot them better than anything else I've ever tried and they fit me.

Well, get out with your friend and shoot the thing a bunch. If you like it after running a few hundred rounds though then by all means buy one.

I owned two in the past and they did go bang every time.

I have a line on an as-new never fired M21 regular frame and one mag (no box or papers) for around $500 with fees & shipping (it's out of state & I will have to transfer it). It looks like these are going for that or a little more; at least it looks like a fair price. I have also found that Crimson Trace makes its laser grips for every Glock but the 21 - what's with that?? This pistol has the standard Glock rail on the front frame, not the Piccatinny, a minus, but isn't there someone who makes an add-on laser that will fit the Glock rail? Looks like an opportunity to me, based on the number of people looking for one at the Columbus, GA, gunshow last weekend...

FYI.
The picatinny rail is only available on Glock 21SF with ambi-mag release.
Ambi-mag release Glocks can only use the newest (8th) generation of Glock magazines and the older (1st-7th) generation magazines will not work in them.

I love my Glock 21 SF. I had a grip reduction done to it to remove what was left of the hump in the backstrap. Now the grip is just a little bigger than a 1911, and it has the same grip angle as the 1911.

Sorry Quiet but that isn't correct. There is a version (sometimes called the California version) of the G21SF that has the standard mag release and the Glock rail rather than the Piccatinny. I know because I have one.

And Maj Dad, you might consider getting a G21 from the same place I got mine. Glockmeister sells them new with 2 mags for $529 and free shipping to your FFL.

I'm retired LEO and spent all but my probationary period carrying one model of 1911 45 ACP or another. After retirement I ran my own firearms training business. I got introduced to the Glock because I saw so many in my classes. To cut to the chase, my carry gun is now a Glock and most of the time it is a G21. I have both the 3rd Gen G21 and a new G21SF. The SF grip frame is a little more comfortable but the older model is like an old friend. It has digested something over 25,000 rounds without a single malfunction.

How ever you end up with one, I think you will like the G21.

Dave

I have the Glock 21. Fantastic gun: accurate, never had a jam in 2k rounds, and recoil is non existent. My fiancee shoots mine (the G21 is her favorite pistol by far) and has no problem even with small hands. I highly recommend it.

I've got a 21 sf with the pictinny rail and ambi mag release. It is a soft shooter and is very easy to shoot accurately . I like the ambi release so I can use my trigger finger to drop the mag. I have small hands and can tell a diff between the regular and SF models .

Now the grip is just a little bigger than a 1911, and it has the same grip angle as the 1911.

So, the reduction changed the angle on the front of the grip from 15 degrees on the Glock to the 11 degrees of the 1911? Or just got rid of the bump in the backstrap?

It's a great gun. I picked mine up used with 3 mags (2 had the 4 rd extension) for under $500. It's a sweet shooter with all the ammo I've tried. I have yet to have a malfunction. You can't go wrong with a G21, but watch out because they multiply in the safe. :D

Have was I not correct.

The picatinny rail is only available on the Glock 21SF with ambi-mag release.

There are three variations of the Glock 21SF.
1. Picatinny rail + ambi-mag release
2. Glock rail + ambi-mag release
3. Glock rail + standard mag release

Th OP expressed interest in wanting a picatinny rail on a Glock 21 and my FYI post was just stating how the only variant of the Glock 21 with a picatinny rail is the Glock 21SF with ambi-mag release and how the ambi-mag release Glocks are limited in which type of Glock magazines can be used in them.

I've got a Glock 21, not the SF, with a picatinny rail. I usually keep a streamlight TLR-1 mounted. I use it mostly as home defense weapon, although I used it to qualify for my Armed Guard license. If I decide to work as an armed guard, it will be my duty weapon carried in a FOBUS security holster. I prefer 1911's, but I am also a fan of some Glock models. I also have a G30 that I use occasionally for CC, but I usually carry one of my 1911's.

I would happily carry my 21sf on duty if the city would let me. Its not pretty, but its as reliable as a rock.

Quiet, if I misunderstood then I apologize. I thought you were saying the 21SF was only available with the Picatinny rail and ambi mag release.

Thanks For All The Input

I do apreciate the responses, and I bought it for $440 plus shipping. Not bad if I do say so... I'll chime back in after I get it & take on a shakedown cruise to the range. Now for the accessorizing...:D
