I want to get a polymer .40 to carry around with me when I go hiking, fishing and camping here in Washington. My idea is to attach a holster to my backpack in the lower back area. The kind I have actually has suspension that keeps the pack off of that area. Do you guys think that'd work well? Also, I know the XDm doesn't have the track record of the Glock, but really, would I be losing anything or gain by getting the XDm to be a tough outdoor, reliable .40? Any help would be great, thanks.

I have an XDM in 9mm. I don't think you will be giving up anything as far as the pistol itself. If you bumped up the caliber to a 10mm then you'd have a real stopper for anything your likely to encounter.

Well, assuming the XDm is built off the exact same internals as the standard XD, it should be a very reliable, durable gun that would serve you well under any conditions.

I've owned 2 XDs and 3 Glocks. I got rid of the XDs (for no good reason) and only kept 2 Glocks (19 and 26). I've had no trouble with either brand, but I just prefer the Glock for its finish, lighter weight, and less bulky design. However, I don't really like the full sized Glocks (ie 22,17). The grip is somewhat longer than the compact guns (ie 23,19) and the backstrap is too curvy and doesn't fit my medium-large hands very well. For that reason, I say if you are looking at a full-sized .40 I'd lean more towards the XDm. I think the XDm in OD green/black would make for a very nice woods gun.

I have owned sold and fired both. As a duty weapon at one point i carried a glock. Now with that said they are both excellent guns but as musch as I would NEVER part with my Springfield 1911's if you put a glock and a xd in front of me and I was in a situation where my life depended on the gun going bang I would take the Glock. And thats just because out of all the range sessions I have ever been involved in I never seen one fail using factory ammo. I am not saying it cannot happen but I have seen a XD with feed and ejection issues but only 1 time. The guy was using reloads so I cannot put put the gun down reloads perhaps was the primary issue there...

Those safepackers are pretty cool, anybody use those? I think they'd look funny wearing around to the store, but hiking in the mountains would look pretty normal I think.

matai, You can find extra mags for the Glock, try looking for extra mags for the XD. The grip saftey on the XD, is just something else to worry about. Give the revolvers some thought. orchidhunter

They're both great guns. Have you had a chance to handle them both? To me, that's the biggest difference in them. I respect Glocks for what they are, but would never own one because they just don't feel good or point naturally in my hands. The large framed ones in 10mm and .45acp are especially terrible for those with small hands. The XD and XDm on the other hand I have found to be extremely comfortable. Go with the one that feels the best.

As to the magazines...They're out there. Midway carries them. They're out of stock at the moment but expect more in next week. The bottom line is that it's a brand new model. In a few more months the magazines will be everywhere.

And I'm not sure what exactly about the grip safety needs worrying about. You hold the gun and it shoots...

The 10mm loaded with the right ammo is pretty close to upper-mid-range .357 Magnum rounds in power. When you time that by the magazine capacity you have a really nice defense package against 2 and 4 legged beasties. It really puts the .40 to shame. Do you need the extra? In WA probably not. Is it worth hedging your bets and not accepting "Probably" when it would be your life on the line? I'd say so.

At the same time, do you reload? If not you won't be doing much practicing with a 10mm unless you've got a lot more of a disposable income than me. A .40 S&W that you can hit quickly moving targets with is better than the 10mm you haven't practiced with.
