Glock calibers

They did away with the Gen 4's right, so I assume all the other caliber are Gen 3's? It will be interesting to see how many calibers they eventually port over to Gen 5's, and how many they eventually discontinue.

Not entirely. Gen 3 and 4’s are still made, but maybe not in some calibers. Gen 3’s because of Silly-fornia approved list. Large frames are still Gen 3 and 4.

I've seen issued 357 sig. Several departments. I never saw a 45 GAP outside of a gun store. Lol

With Glock USA headquarters in Smyrna GA they literally gave the GA State Patrol brand new 45 GAP pistols when they came out. They hoped that would help generate sales, but the troopers didn't like the guns. They kept them a couple of years and traded them for Glock 17's in 9mm. That is the only major LE agency that ever used them to my knowledge.

There were a few departments willing to try 357 Sig when they didn't trust 9mm. But over time 9mm has proven to be just as effective as anything else and only about 50 FPS or slower than 357 Sig. When the cost of ammo is taken into account plus reduced capacity in other cartridges it is easy to see why 9mm is winning the cartridge wars.

As far as I know there are several that still use them. I know NC highway patrol and VA state police did not that long ago.

ETA....THE 357 sig. Not the GAP

In terms of calibers, they definitely offer everything in common use, along with a few in much less common use. I suppose someone must be buying those "boutique" calibers if they are still being made. They also offer them in various sizes and with some other selections/features like the MOS models, if that is what you are into- and all based on the same mechanical principle, with a huge overlapping in parts compatibility, regardless of model or caliber. Boringly reliable and easy and economical to work on if required. In worldwide use too. Whether you like them or not, there is no denying that Glock is a huge success story in handguns. Probably the biggest since JMB.

Neither offer .45 GAP at the minimum. But don’t think either offer .357 Sig either.
They don't offer all of the same calibers. They offer the same number of calibers. Ruger offers pistols in 5.56x45 and 5.7x28 and S&W offers pistols in 5.56x45 and 30 Super Carry, none of which are offered by Glock. I can't speak to how readily available any of these less common calibers are from any of those three companies in real life, but that's what they have on their respective websites.

I don't think Anyone is buying the GAP. I think Glock just won't admit it was a dumb option that nobody asked for. Lol. If you nix your chambering with your very own name in it then it doesn't look very "perfect". Lol.

Or maybe they are such a great company that they refuse to Abandon the 2 people who bought one. Either way, I don't think they sell many. I have 10 Glocks at least. Never even consider a gap. Lol

NCHP went to .357 Sig in 2009, issuing the S&W M&P. After repeated issues with the S&W, they shifted to the Sig P226 in 2014, also in .357 Sig, and as of 2022, are still using it. I still remember when they were using S&W M28 revolvers..... and driving Plymouth Fury patrol cars

They had the Beretta 96 as well at one point. My wife's uncle is a newly retired trooper.I thought it was 229 but maybe it is 226. Our game wardens also use 229 in 357 sig. I have buckets of 40 and 357 brass that came from them

As far as I know the 45 gap was introduced just before the “awb” from 1994-2004 died. May it Rest In Peace forever! If that stupid ban did not go away I believe the GAP would much more popular.

I've never quite understood the point of that cartridge. Seems like it combines the downsides of both .45 ACP and 9 MM and tosses the advantages of both. Why would it have been different if the AWB didn't go away?

I remember reading About the gap in 02-03. And even as a fan of 45 and 10mm I said "that will flop". Our county issued the Glock 21 at the time.

And now that the FBI says "the technological advancements of bullet design" make the 9mm equal to our better than a 50 bmg..... it's just dead in the water. Just think if those same "technological advancements in bullet design" only applied to 40, 45,44 357 sig. Or even 25. We could all just carry our baby Browning, colt, or jetfire into battle.

If. Only if

Seriously though. The gap was perfect for the 3 people who were dying to carry a 10 rd capacity 45, but had girly hands and couldn't carry a real 45 AND didn't just go ahead and do what everyone else did and just carry a 40..nor did they want to carry one of the superb choices in 45 acp with a slimmer grip (p-220/1911/p97/p345/ 450x whatever the smith was). Lol

The 10 round capacity limit. I know if I was only limited to a max of 10 rounds, I would have more interest in 45 caliber. But, being allowed to have +5, +7 more rounds of a still pretty effective cartridge in the same size gun has all but eliminated 45 from my carry rotation.

It was designed to give a .45 caliber round in a G17/G19 size gun for duty use. The G21 is a bigger gun and not very small hand friendly.

Edit to add: Also probably so Glock could have a round with their name on it. S&W had the .40 S&W and SIG had the .357 SIG.

I saw some police trade in Glock 37 about 3 years ago for around $220. I wish I bought one. If nothing else it will be a collector piece someday.

They carried the Beretta 96 in .40S&W prior to the S&W M&P. NCHP issued their 70th Anniversary Commemorative as a Model 96 Beretta and I think there were only 500 of them made. I have a NCHP 50th Anniversary Commemorative, a nickel 6" M29-2 S&W revolver. The Beretta:

One of my landscaping customers is a recently retired NCHP Trooper, 20 yrs, service. He was issued the M96 when he started in 2007. He was given his P226 when he retired. He's pretty cool, he was doing accident investigation when he retired, flying drones above the accident site. He still flies drones, but does it for a power company now,.
