They carried the Beretta 96 in .40S&W prior to the S&W M&P. NCHP issued their 70th Anniversary Commemorative as a Model 96 Beretta and I think there were only 500 of them made. I have a NCHP 50th Anniversary Commemorative, a nickel 6" M29-2 S&W revolver. The Beretta:

One of my landscaping customers is a recently retired NCHP Trooper, 20 yrs, service. He was issued the M96 when he started in 2007. He was given his P226 when he retired. He's pretty cool, he was doing accident investigation when he retired, flying drones above the accident site. He still flies drones, but does it for a power company now,.

Her uncle has both the Beretta 96 and his sig. I would guess he started mid 90s and retired in the last couple years. I still thought it was a 229. I have 229 and 226 and they are pretty close. So maybe I'm wrong. He actually preferred the Beretta. Ive never heard him mention any smith.
