Saturday evening I had to take a friend to the emergency room for a problem with her head. It was a normal Saturday night in the big suburb. Heads crushed in with Baseball bats, hart attacks and a kid that got hit with a dart in the eye.
But in the space next to us I got to see first hand what a GSW looks like. The victim (Gang Banger) was hit with a large cal. bullet to the upper/shulder area. It was a gastly sight! You could'nt of plugged the hole with a tennis ball. I sat there peeking through the curtin looking as the LEO took photos and asked questions. Well the victim was just minding his own bussines, when he was shot by the owner of a shoe store. It appeared that the poor sole was just there with his buddies looking to purchase some shoes when this made man/owner started shooting for no reason. At lest thats what he told the LEO.
They then preped the victim for the OR and took him away. I then herad the LEO talking to his partner "Another one off the street for the night" and they smirked and left!
Bad guns bad bad bad! :D

:neener: To the unfortunate sole that got shot :neener:

AMF everyone. hope your weekend was better than mind. Also, did you know that they treat people who poison themselfs with drugs and alchol? Why waste those resources on the defected?

Muzzle contact would have left powder burns, I should think. My thought is a good hollowpoint in any of the faster calibers. Shoulders aren't very deep from front to back, and that would put the exit at about the right spot for the widest part of the stretch cavity. Smashing through bones on the way through contributes to the damage by creating a cloud of sub-fragments.

I've also read about .45 ACP 185 grain +p's doing just what you described. An interviewed perp once described taking a round of buckshot to the stomache as withstandable, "like a good whack" as he described it, but when hit in the shoulder with a fast .45, it was "Liken' to take my arm off!" Said perp recieved permanent crippling damage from the shot, but at least didn't have to have his arm amputated.

I don't know anything more than that. He was a skinny Latino teenager would be my guess. I only saw him in bits and pices (NO PUN) because everyone was running around him trying to save him I guess. The LEO kept snapping a picture here and there and his Mother was yelling and crying. But I saw his buddies in the waiting area and just looking at them gave me the whillies! Mean, feral looking kids.

Never seen a real gun shot wound up close. A fireman in the family was describing a guy that was shot twice with a shotgun, assumably with buckshot. Front was ugly, the backside made his lunch come back up with a quickness. Said ribs were sticking out and lots of parts that are supposed to be inside weren't.

This is a guy that's seend babies killed in car crashes and teenagers sitting in the front seat with their legs in the back seat, along with countless gruesome motorcycle accidents. He said he didn't feel quite right for a couple days and also switched to buckshot to defend his house.

Some people are intrigued by such visions, I am not. I don't understand the the fascination with looking at online morgue pictures and videos. 'Real' guns with real defensive loads leave big ugly holes. End of story.

A few years ago in a CJ class I was taking, the county sheriff's chief inspector came to see us. He brought along three or four trays of slide photos of everything from sucide-by-gun to ghastly MVAs that make anything you see in a horror movie seem like children's TV. Man, did that screw with me for a few days. I like to eat and didn't do so for a few days afterward. No real interest in the gruesome stuff here.

Back in high school they had a program they started for prom, where a group of nurses brought in a bunch of slides to show the consequences of drinking and driving, doing drugs, fighting etc.
I'd shot various varmints before and knew exactly what a gun did. Had up close and personal experience, but somehow it just doesn't even compare when you see it done to a human. Those were definitely some of the most disgusting things I've ever seen in my life. Shotguns from close range will turn you into hamburger. And what was amazing is that a few of them lived, or I should say survived. They didn't really have much of a life afterwards.
For some reason they also showed ATV accidents, a few cases of ill made decisions with a john deere (them hit close to home since thats what I drove to prom ;) ) and lots of knife fights. They actually showed the live picture, and the X ray picture of a guy who got stabbed in the eye with a knife that looked like a benchmade AFCK. It was sunk clear down beyond the bolster, and he was alive. I just about got sick.
Anybody that fantasizes about this sort of thing has something wrong with them.

There are a number of EMT's and Paramedics on THR who are all to familier with gun shot wounds.

None are pretty and many are also difficult to understand how anyone can do that to a human being. The mechanics of injury are secondary to the motivation and thought process of the shooter and THEY are usually worse than the injury.

What the liberal thinkers forget is that the issue is a social problem and that "gun control" is not the answer to the problem.

Another one for SSI disability. People ought to spend more time at the range so they can save more tax payers money. Sorry for being so crude but where does it end. Not in our lifetime. Boon :banghead:

I've seen a couple but they've been really lame ;) . Mostly small caliber FMJ stuff that our poorer urbanites shoot each other with.

Everything I've seen in the ER has apparently been FMJ. However, I've seen some VERY fortunate people with GSW's.

A woman shot in the left buttock. Exit wound in the middle of her pubic hair. Net result? Nada. The bullet missed her hip joint, pelvis, colon and bladder...apparently she urinated immediately before she was shot.

Man brought in by EMS. Shot in the mouth with a .32. It knocked a tooth out and the bullet was picked up by his foot.

19 year old female walked into the ER bleeding from her face. Shot with a 9mm about a half inch to the left of her nose. CT showed the bullet nestled up against her carotid artery.

While visiting someone in the hospital I struck up a conversation with another patient. He had obviously just had shoulder surgery, having had some work done on mine a couple of months before I asked about his.
Two years before, he was drinking heavily and decided suicide was the best answer to his problems. He loaded up a 12ga with #6 shot and prepared to blow his head off. Before he could pull the trigger he realized that dying wouldn't solve anything but he still had to teach "her" (ex-wife) a lesson somehow so he held the muzzle to his shoulder and fired.
The wad from the shell exited the back of his shoulder, muscle, tendon & bone were destroyed. After the initial surgery he couldn't work, having nothing better to do he entered alcohol rehab. His story was so compelling that he got a job at the place lecturing fellow alcoholics, complete with a slide show of his wounds. He claimed the visuals are pretty effective.

A friend in college took a public speaking course.

He HATED public speaking.

So we told him to lecture the class on something he understood, and that they, including the prof, didn't. He was a criminology major.

So he did a discussion on crime scene pathology, and determining the time of death, etc.

With pictures.

With the first one, two people ran out of the room.

One other upchucked before it was over.

He got an A.

Used to work in an OR. Seen my share of GSW. Weird stuff happens when the blood is removed, you actually see the wound( externaly and internally). 22lr kills a guy and a .40 JHP just cracks/chips the Xiphoid process. Attempted suicide with a .357 guys loses teeth, palate and part of nose, a .38 WC to a femoral artery and its funeral time.

Shot Placement, Shot Placement, Shot Placement....

Didn't have to be a big bullet. Probably hit the collarbone or part of shoulderblade, bone chips blowing outwards can do alot of damage.
