my wife's brother got married to a rabidly anti-gun girl last year, after about 5 years of dating. so, during the previous 6 years, my wife, my b-i-l and myself have been hammering her, unrelenting, to just try to shoot once. after about 4 years, we finally got her to go to a range to watch, though she wouldn't get near a gun. still, we drilled her at every opportunity.

sunday she went out and fired b-i-l's 9mm. she wound up shooting all his ammo! on top of that, she said it was fun, and she'd do it again.

took awhile, but we won one!

well, i've already planted the seed about a browning buckmark or beretta neos - we'll see where it goes.

taurus- yes, we need to win 'em all... most of us try. this particular girl was real tough though... she was seriously anti-gun, and unlike my b-i-l, she votes. so, this convert is a massive victory for me.

for a b-day gift for my b-i-l i gave him a remington 700 vls, scope, rings, and bases... wonder if it would be out of line to give her a 22 pistol for their wedding anniversary next month??

Why a 22? She already proved she could handle a nine. Dropping her in bang value might lose her interest. C'mon! get her a 9! The ammo's not that expensive, and besides, she deserves it for converting. Umm, 'don't know if a gun's exactly a good wedding anniversary gift. You give it to her, he begins getting nervous thinking "till death do we part" is in a matter of days, not years.

Not one little bit. The only problem with it, is deciding what it is you really want to get her. A 22 pistol is a wonderful idea, but it sounds like a nine would work also. Nothing at all wrong with a Buckmark or a Mark II. With a gun like that she can learn a lot, not get tired, and afford to shoot whenever she likes.

But ... same goes for a nine. Ammo's cheap & she's proven she can not only handle it, but actually enjoys it.

Hard choice, but yea. Get her a pistol for their anniversery. Perfect gift.

+1 on bringing her around.

i got rid of my 9mm pistols awhile back, but i keep finding stray ammo here and there. just found another couple hundred federal hydrashocks, so i'll give the ammo to them, and after that, i think i'll really be out.

the thinking on not giving a 9mm... b-i-l wants to trade the 9 out for a 45 - probably a 1911 of some sort, though i'll be sure to point out the browning hi-power to him before he makes a decision. so, there wouldn't be any common ammo in the house. if his wife gets a 22, then i think she'd shoot more, and if she has a gun that is truly her own, maybe it will lead to her getting more involved, by going out and shooting her own gun when he goes out (usally once or twice a week). plus, there would be common ammo, then.

i also have this thing about cheap guns, and like for about anybody, money's tight. so $250-300 would buy more gun if the gun was a 22 than if it was a bhp knock-off or something.

next step is to introduce her to revolvers... and then buy a case of coke (coke explodes the best, and is inexpensive, and clean-up is easy).

I always say to my liberal co-workers...

Let go to the range, after shooting a full magazine....if their is not a smile on your face......your just dead inside!!!! :D

I say go for the .22. 9mm may be cheap, but you cant buy 500 rounds of it with a ten dollar bill and still have enough left for a drink or two, or three.

You already got her into handguns, now tempt her with something else. Let her and her husband decide which handgun she should get. You get her a bolt action rimfire rifle (no semi-autos, reliability problems will discourage a beginner), say a Marlin 925, a scope, and a box of Mini-Mags. A rimfire is the best way to get a beginner bitten by the rifle bug, and you should be able to get the rifle and scope for around $200. With no recoil and cheap ammo, I bet she'd enjoy it and turn into a real rifleman... er, woman.

Next thing you know, she'll be headed for Camp Perry. :D

On a side note, no matter what you get her, I'd get the okay from her husband first. Not because it's a gun, but just because you don't know how he might feel about another man getting his wife a present. You don't want to step on his toes. It's just a matter of having respect for his role as her husband.

darth- you're right on the timing. have to spend some time talking to her husband and see what he's got brewing up.

entropy- my wife and i hammered b-i-l really hard after the presidential elections after we found out he didn't vote. next time we are out there, we're gonna drag his butt in and get him registered. i think it will be easier to get him to vote than to get his wife to shoot. his dad, mom, wife, and sister all vote, so it shouldn't be too much to ask for him to get himself in there and do his civic duty.

Ha! This is good! Big congrats, Dakotasin :D
Oh, and you are very generous with the gifts too. Very cool. My b-day is Oct 1~ :neener: ~sumpthin for whoopass on your prairie dogs would be super!

bean- sure wish i could help ya! but... i think you're in pretty good shape already.

went down to sioux falls today, which mandates a stop at gary's... that place was packed! guns were going out the door at a pace that i've never seen gary's handle before.

cool thing... there was a woman at the rental counter, probably in her 40's or so w/ a couple (older - maybe mid-teens?) kids in tow, and she was drilling the guy behind the counter about 22's. she ended up renting a couple and went on in to the range and shot w/ the kid for a bit. also saw a grandmotherly type sitting at the table behind the range. my 6-year-old daughter wedged herself between the lady and the glass, so i stepped forward to admonish my daughter and remind her that she did in fact, have some manners... lady says: that's ok, i've had enough break... and w/ that, she headed back into the range... kind of surreal.

talked to my b-i-l and i think he's gonna go ahead and buy her a pistol on his own. wants me to come out and help steer him toward the proper one. his wife is a bit intimidated by rifles in general, so we'll just stick w/ handguns for now, and win her over to rifles incrementally.
