heads up on SA 35

i bought a hi-p for a super price at a local auction in ex condition, its marked mauser-werke oberndorf gmbh on the left side of the slide and marked mauser-mod.80. sa. cal. 9mm parabellum on the right side. i don,t know where it was made, but it has passed the 500 round mark with out any problems. serial #80003553. there is what looks like a small shield with a N on top of the shield on the left front of the of the trigger guard.

It is a labor intensive design and FN never put any money into modernizing the process. Also it would not make sense to design a modern full sized gun with a capacity of 15 rounds. I believe they leverage design techniques and tech from other current guns, My issue with the new one it is just too big. I like original design better. Also there is no reason not to shoot the nickeled one.

Post a pic of that pistol @eastbank

To my knowledge, all current MecGar production is 15 round.
As regards the Browning/Saive HiPo design being perfection incarnate, come down from the mountaintop...that internal extractor has been gone for some long time now. :)
The Savage pistols were one of the few preceding designs offering a double stack handgun magazine; the HiPo's name came from its (then) amazing 13 round capacity. Everybody else had single stacks.
Let's back up and take a deep breath. Magazine design has made great leaps since 1935; again, witness the 365 9mm pocket pistol with a 10 round capacity.
Doubt this? Take any modern mag, fill it to capacity, there's just enough slack to lock in against a closed slide. Older mag designs have more slack.
Adding two rounds shouldn't put the design to the edge of failure, done by an outfit like MecGar.
Are magazines consumable parts? Absolutely. You'll want spares, and keep an eye on individual mag's performance. I number all of mine, and keep track of any troublemakers. Two of my 365 mags had duff springs early on; I fitted replacements.
So keep an eye on your mags, especially high round count examples, clean, replace springs as needed. Treat mag maintenance just like replacing springs elsewhere in a pistol.

This post demonstrates that you have very little understanding of the BHP. Yes, today’s mags are designed in a different manner than the original BHP mag. The 365 mag has nothing to do with the BHP mag. Apples to oranges. Oh, and the 365 Mags wear out quickly just like the recoil spring because NIB they are almost at the limit of their design when it comes to reliability.

Anyone who understands anything about semi automatic handguns understand that the weakest link is a mag. When you only alter the mag on an older design you are shrinking the window of reliability. No worries I am sure you vast experience with 2 BHPs gives you the insight necessary to make the assertions you have. You continue to do you others can choose to believe you at their own risk.

Two posters here seem to know a lot about HiPowers, clones, and magazine stuff. I appreciate that.
I don't quite appreciate the personalities trying to prove someone knows more or knows better than the other.

Perhaps just post one's opinion without trying to denigrate the other person, and any of us can decide what's best for ourselves.
The thread started out merely with somebody posting a source of supply and pricing on the current SpringfieldArmory SA35.

That's all or "pile onto me" for awhile instead of each other:)

I do recognize both of you have more knowledge on magazines and HiPowers than I'll ever know. Thanks for that knowledge.

My Hi-Power is a CD-HP, Hungarian parts assembled by Magnum Research. It's a VERY nice pistol, reliable and accurate.
But I sure like the looks of those SA35s. I'm tempted, and Grabagun is a 30 min8te drive for me.

Enough already. Great to have a reasoned conversation. Have a nice day.

Whatever you do, don't look at the Commander-size HiPo. Saw one at a gunshow today, and I was mighty tempted. (A 50 year old S&W M67 got my money instead...)

I understand what you are saying. The issue is that on the internet it impossible to know whose “opinions” are based in fact and time on a particular platform vs what they read on the internet or simply believe to be true. There is a difference. Subtle hints tell one how to separate the wheat from the chaff. IMHO

With that I will bow out.
