Good day, all. Some while back I sold off most of my pistol collection to help my finance my graduate education. At present, I'm down to a single handgun: my P229 in .40S&W. I love it, but unfortunately it's a touch heavy for routine concealed carry (especially in warm weather) and .40 isn't the cheapest caliber to blast with down at the range. To this end, and now that I've discovered that finances aren't as tight as I was expecting, I've decided to add a new 9 mm pistol as the first step to rebuilding the collection. :)

To be sure, I don't want a "run of the mill" 9 mm handgun, and this probably won't replace the P229 as my real "go-to" carry piece (or at the least one I keep in the car) so I have no interest in something like a Glock (too ugly anyhow - sorry!) or a 92FS.

Anyhow, I've settled upon a handful of options, and I'm curious to know which you would choose (and why!) given this line-up. Hands-on experience and feedback is always preferred - I've now handled and shot each of these (of course), and like them so that's not of any concern at this point.

So, here's what I'm considering:

Walther P1 - these have been popping up lately as some of the German state institutions have been unloading their surplus, and you can get an excellent/like-new version with the various reinforcements and upgrades (I like the offerings at www.dansammo.com) for around $300. I've always loved the look of the P1/P38 - such a classic Teutonic design (appeals to my German-born soul) with a lot of history behind it. Of all the choices listed here, this one is undoubtedly the best conversation piece (something any collector appreciates) though I will, of course, shoot it. :)

The real downside to the P1 is that I wouldn't trust or use it in a carry/SD situation, because of its age, size, and unorthodox shape, so it would mostly be a range blaster and part-time safe queen.

Walther PPK .380 or clone - another pistol that needs no introduction. Like the P1, a classic design - but unlike the P1, a perfect carry pistol. Downsides: price, and (from what I've read) some reliability concerns with the license-made US models. During the course of my research, I also noted that the PPK is a frequently emulated design. The one that really stood out to me was the Bersa Thunder 380 - which looks to be a HELL of a bargain and carries some pretty impressive testimonials. So good, in fact, that I'm wondering if the PPK is actually worth the cost (twice as much). Thoughts?

There's also the P232, but it seems to be too expensive for what it is. I can't really see any reason to choose it over the PPK or the Thunder despite my affinity for SIG pistols.

By the way - yes, I did say 9 mm, but .380 technically is a 9 mm round - in Germany, we called it the 9 mm "kurz" or short. :)

SIG Pro SP2022 - my affinity for SIG pistols naturally led me to consider their 9 mm offerings. Excluding close match/redundant models (e.g. P228/P226), the SIG Pro caught my eye. These are polymer framed pistols with folded steel slides. New-in-box models (lifetime warranty and all) are now going for around $450 - considering how similar these are to the HK USP, that's a hell of a bargain! These are all German-made pistols with proof stamps and one of the smoothest factory triggers I've ever used. Finally, I'm absolutely confident that this pistol would be an excellent self defense piece under most circumstances. These qualities have made me put the SP2022 into contention even though I originally wasn't looking for a "regular" autoloader.

So, let me know what you think - and I'm always open to suggestions, of course.

You like SiG, so how about a police surplus P6 from J&G? Run about $250 a copy, or higher for hand select. Supposed to be very, very nice used guns.
I personally have the most fun with my CZs - a good one would be a CZ-75B for a range/home/fun gun.

I picked the P1 because I like the looks of it and every one that I've used has been 100% reliable. It wouldn't bother me to carry one for protection. Sometimes I can be found with a P38 in a shoulder holster.

Fun?

The current crop of German police trade in HK P7's.

Its also reliable, accurate and soft shooting.

The P1 is a classic throwback firearm with history and an interesting pedigree; plus, it's fun to shoot, reliable, accurate -- all the things you look for in a handgun. And yeah, the price is reasonable.

+1 to the offerings at Dan's Ammo. I've picked up two P1s from Dan, plus a beautiful post-war P38, in recent months. If you call him and tell him what you want, he'll hand-pick one for you that won't disappoint.

I voted "other" and will echo Pilot's recommendation of the H&K P7 PSP.

If that's more cash than you want to spend then I would go with the Walther P1.

Both definately meet your "fun" criteria.

If you mean FUN you might think about the B&T TP-9. This will leave a smile in your face. Of your choices given in this poll, you would like the Sig. Live long and shoot safe.

I love the PPK but would definitely get the Bersa .380 over it. The Bersa is half the price, looks every bit as nice, is every bit as nice, and very accurate.

Another option from Bersa is one of their 9mm Luger pistols. Not as nice looking as the .380 CC model in nickel, but every bit as reliable and accurate. Plus cheaper ammo. The only downside is that they're going to be a bit bigger.

I'm a bit surprised by how many votes the SP2022 has gotten so far! I've always thought of it as one of the most underrated guns that SIG makes.

Keep the feedback coming! Hopefully I'll be ready to make a decision sometime next week. In a perfect world I'd just get them all (including the "others" mentioned in this thread), but alas I am young and not quite that wealthy yet. :)

Like most "what should I buy" questions, this one hinges on price. If you're trying to keep the price low, then you'd have a hard time beating a surplus P1. If you're willing to spend a little more, the CZ-75 in whatever flavor is my pick; it will do most everything else you would ask of a handgun as well. Above that, Sigs and BHPs come to mind, but they're more expensive and thus maybe not as "fun," depending on your budget.

No 9mm thread would be complete without me extolling the merits of CZs, so here's a little addendum: the CZ-75 will feed just about anything you put in it, so you can plink with bargain ammo until the cows come home. Just close your eyes and think happy thoughts when you go to buy extra mags. :uhoh:

Bersa compact. Great sights, good trigger, eats everything, darn accurate, fully ambitextrous, and just feels good in your hand. Oh, and it's also not expensive.

Someone has already mentioned it, the Sig P6, and DansAmmo also has those...or did a few weeks ago. I got 2 new P1s from him and the P6...like new with leather holster and 2 matching mag holders.

If fun is the only object it opens lots of doors. Heck buy a Cobray M-11. or one of the HK89 clones that are out there.
You can also check to see if you can find a Tec-9 just to upset the politically correct crowd.

Get a CZ 75. They are made of steel, it's got double rails, accuart to the "T," looks bad as, and by far is the best 9mm for its price range! I've had one for over 5 years and have had no probles at all and I recently purchase another one so I can carry 2 of the same gun with me (I have a CCW). Check out CZ and see what you think! I've seen people say they like their gun or they would never give up their gun, UNTIL they shoot a CZ! This is true, I promise.

Have to agree with Armoredman, Sig or CZ would be my first choices unless you want to go really inexpensive then you could go for a used Ruger or Smith

A note about the P6 - that's actually the pistol that got me thinking in this direction in the first place. I was all set to buy one, until I handled one in person. The only problem with the P6 is that it's just too similar to my P229 - the controls, ergonomics, aesthetics, and so forth. I did originally think that the single stack mag would give it a smaller grip profile (ideal for CCW, of course), but that really isn't the case. Don't get me wrong - I'd really love to have a P6, but given that I'm in the early stages of rebuilding my collection I'm more interested in diversity right now - and it would actually be much cheaper to get a drop-in 9mm conversion barrel for the P229 (or, hell, a .22LR kit). When I get out of school and funds open up then this will be a moot point. The only reason the SP2022 escaped the redundancy problem is that it's a completely different design than the classic P-series pistols with a polymer frame and a somewhat different control arrangement (plus it would be new, with a warranty).

That said, I've checked out each of the suggestions mentioned here, and while checking out the CZ-75, I came across the CZ vz.82. Does anybody have any experience with these? On paper, it looks like a fantastic choice: fires the inexpensive (if not readily available) 9x18 round, double-stack mag, fairly recent/modern design, $200-250 price tag, but best of all - C&R eligible! Apparently they're also reliable enough that a lot of people are using them as carry weapons.

What about the PA-63?

The way this is going, I'll probably end up getting two pistols (most likely a P1 and then one of the PPK style clones - CZ, Bersa, PA-63 etc)...I should try smoking crack, it's probably cheaper. :uhoh:

Man, there are so many good if not excellent 9x19 handguns out there that this is kinda a crap shoot. As long as it weighs over 20oz, recoil won't be much of an issue. You've got the monster all steel beast of the cz sp-01, which is super accurate, or the tiny subcompacts like the xd-9 sc or the glock 26. The wondernine is very saturated market. Find a range and go shoot a bunch. Even used 9s are generally still ready for lots of fun. Beretta, Sig(CPOs are only around 500), glock, Springfield XD, CZ, FN, the list goes on! Its disgusting how many there are! I found a good site about the 9s a while back. http://www.best9mm.com/ pretty good list. There are a lot of good accurate sig 225s out on the surplus market now. Many are under 300, but still in excellent working condition, though a bit worn in the finish. Try to shoot some first if you can.

Ok, "fun" but what's the upper limit on the budget?

* because of a lower demand .380 Auto costs more than
9MM parabellum aka Luger aka 9x19

& since you said you also want something more concealable
for CCW

How about the CZ 75D PCR Compact

http://www.cz-usa.com/product_detail.php?id=37

A base CZ 75B is all steel and weighs approx 35.2 oz. the PCR has an
alloy frame which takes the weight to 27.5 oz. & it's
just slightly shorter in length than the PPK/S. It is however a
double stack and has a 1.5" width, which is in the grip. The
slide design is built with the slide fitting inside the frame instead
of wrapping around in the usual manner. This design is like the
famed for it's accuracy the Sig 210, this design also makes the
slide slimmer. The 14 rd capacity would
probably be funner at the range in terms of reloading and feeding
it.

Another you might consider is the
Sig P239 Single stack 8 rd. and a slim 1.2" width 3.6 Bbl. Len.

http://www.sigsauer.com/Products/ShowCatalogProductDetails.aspx?categoryid=9&productid=71

I've seen them with an optional 10 rd mag which has an extension at the
base that extends the grip contour. carry it with the 8 rd mag
for CCW but carry a 10 rd spare mag(s).

& here's something off the wall...

Try to find a used P-08 Luger that isn't a collector's piece but
a shooter with mis-matched numbers etc. in the $500-$650 range
if you want something with a truly German historical cachet.

9x19 WWB Bulk 115 FMJ at Wally WOrld is going for about $19/100
currently - I'm a recent new owner of a CZ 75B in 9x19 & I find it
FUN, reliable and accurate but you might not want it due to similiar
weight as a Beretta 92 FS.
