Hoodie at a Pawn Shop

Look at how the Arab folks dress. No shorts or T shirts for them. It works.

Its called a hoodie because it has a hood, not because hoods wear them. They were called hoodies before they became the uniform of choice for urban miscreants.

I'm a 51 year old white guy and I have a closet full of them. Of course I'm not wearing them now.

To Deaf With Respect and Concern

Firstly, I've always enjoyed your postings.
Also, you need to find a safer pawnshop to browse.
You need to find a dentist in a better part of town.
You need to go to the dentist more often.

No disrespect intended. Please, stay safe.
I look forward to your further posts.

I used to go there too (different town, same place), and I occasionally tread on the borderline still. Shame on me.

Well Gun Master,

A 'safe' pawnshop is a strange term. Most pawnshops are not in the high class districts so to look for a 'safe' one is to not go to pawnshops, just to be safe. Just have to risk it I guess.

As for the dentist, perfect teeth and no dentist bill for years (and thus more money to spend in the pawnshops.) Can't beat that.

It was hot ( 90 F ) and humid today.. I saw this young black person wearing a hoodie with the hood up and sun glasses.. walking with a swagger. I thought to myself how dumb is it to portray himself as a thug. I know he is not breaking the law... he may have been trying to make a statement.. but in my opinion , why would anyone in their right mind, put themself out there to be a very recognizable concern by some crazy guy who has had enough of this political correctness... as A parent, how could any one let their son out, where the uniform of what a hoodie has come to represent. WE see it on the news every night, Some guy or group of guys in hoodies and sunglasses , robbing a store, or mugging someone....

I think its funny that so many of you see a hoodie as "thug" apparel. Its a standard item here. My grandma wears one. She is not "gangsta".

Its not the clothing choice that was suspicious, it was him covering his face.

Gangsta is as gangsta does.

Granted, hoodies are not uncommon apparel. But, as with so many other things in life, it's usually not a single thing which trips the Spidey Sense. It's usually a combination of things.

Hoodies on a bunch of people at a ball game on a cold fall day is not very likely to make me look twice.

Hoodie on a single person in a pawn shop in the middle of July with hands in the pockets and a limited number of other people inside? That's quite another matter.

Walking down a crowded downtown sidewalk in the middle of the afternoon with a hoodie or two in the crowd probably wouldn't get much more than cursory attention from me.

Walking down a secluded sidewalk on a dark night with a hoodie or two pacing along with me? Again, quite another matter.

Hoodie or no, bad guys typically like for the remaining odds to also be in their favor when considering a criminal act. And that means opportunity. A hoodie doesn't mean opportunity...it means concealment of identity. Be alert to what constitutes opportunity as well as what constitutes suspicious behavior.

A reasonable person like myself.. with surroundings awareness, honed over 70 years, can get instant gut feelings, that something is out of place.. I've been carrying for 50 years. and my awareness is keen.

Yesterday it was " HOT " 90 + and humid.. its the middle of the summer.. I see a kid, ( a kid to me.. maybe 20, maybe 30 ....walking down the street with a long sleeve fleece Sweatshirt with a hood ( a hoodie ), with the hood up, and sunglasses.. THAT instantly sent red flags from my gut... Does this look out of place? Of course it does.. if it looks out of place to me.,.,.. then what do you think Police might think.. its 90 degrees out and this guy is covered from head to toe... Illegal? of course not.... very very out of place on a 90 degree day? of course it is... with the state of the world today, and how we are always told to be aware of our surroundings.. why would a kid dress like a thug on a 90 degree day... It wasn't a cold evening at a ball park in the fall.
was that guy looking for opportunity??? who knows, but he was certainly dressed for opportunity.
BTW.... just to make it clear....its not the hoodie itself, that characterizes a thug, its wearing something that hides any distinguishing characteristics... Tattoos... skin tone hair color, face shape, ears, etc. then add the sunglasses and any eye characteristics are gone as well. A hoodie and sunglasses is about as close as it gets to wearing a disguise for Illegal activity. Now Add a 90+ F degree day.. and it looks out of place. If you error on the side of caution... there is a fine line between rights, and purposely sticking your finger in the eye of those who are in the business of keeping us safe..... ( Law enforcement ) Cops can have reasonable concern for a guy covered from head to toe on a very hot day.. and want to know what he is doing, who he is , etc... Its not to harass, its to defend and serve... with reasonable suspicion..

Its not a fashion statement and it really works. Try it before you have such a strong mis-opinion.

The internal body temp is around 98. The external body skin temp is around 91.

When is like 100 outside, do you take all of the insulation out of your house?!?!

No! You're trying to keep the hotter temp outside and the cooler temps inside.

In AZ where I live part time, in the summer it gets 120+. I would wear an undershirt then an over button down shirt. The 1st shirt catches the sweat and cools while the outer shirt keep the sun off me and my damp undershirt. A damp shirt in the direct sun doesn't work as well as a damp shirt in the shade.

I know it sounds counter intuitive but you want to keep the heat off you.

I saw that most roofers, in 120+ heat, wearing tightly woven long sleeve shirts (often snug) and various types of hats and built in hoods. Roof temps with the tar paper were pushing over 135 degrees measured with a non-contact laser thermometer. (They didn't wear an under/over combo because the material of their shirts wicked moister well. I was wearing primarily cotton 2 shirt combo)

That's when got a clue.

Doesn't anyone see our military in the middle east in 130 temp wearing there long sleeves and hats? The military isn't that hung up on itself that they wouldn't change their attire if it made sense.

If looks like a duck it could be a duck. If it looks like a duck AND acts like a duck AND sounds lie a duck.... its probably a duck

Don't judge a man by his hoodie. Judge him by his actions. Evaluate the whole scenario in its entirety.

Ill error on the side of caution in this day and age... the idea about roofers, is they don't get 800 degree tar on their body, I've seen thousands of roofers, and construction workers, they all have great tans, because they are usually shirtless..
Seeing someone with a hoodie in 2015, on a 90+ day gets my attention....just like it did the other day. I've talked to cops on this very issue, and they are quick to ask for ID, which they are legally able to do. This Political correctness issue is one that will get us into a lot of trouble down the road...

"...have all my teeth..." 61. Have 'em all too. Most are in an envelope. HAHAHAHA.
It's not a fashion statement or a gang uniform. Long sleeves and hats are about keeping yourself from getting burned and avoiding heat related issues.
Anybody working in a shop that is prone to being robbed gets to recognize the bad guys by their body language. Isn't about their hat.

Uhhhh No.

1st off the tar is no more than about 500 degrees because the flash point is about 560 degrees. You're 260 degrees wrong.

When its 120+ and the UV index is that high, the shirtless guys are lobster red with cancer/pre-cancer spots on their backs.

In that area they DO NOT hot mop any pitched roofs because it seeps and sags down.

These are all pitched roofs with tile over tar paper. Only flat patios covers mght get hot mopped there.

The "highest softening temp" hot mop tar is available is just over 200 degrees.
.

My A/C guy wont go into the attic if its over 180. Yes, he has refused work several times.

Vented attics get over 200 degrees there

Ahhhh.... what am I doing... you probably have no clue because you haven't been in that type of environment for any length of time or know anything about roofs.

Here some info if you want to know what your talking about..

This is Texas sonny, high temps and HIGH HUMIDITY.

Only a nutjob or robber would wear a hoody in such weather. I've seen a few semi-insane ones push shopping carts while wearing wool pullover hats in the summers down here. My wife, a nurse who has worked in many positions at a very large hospital, said they wear the caps to keep their brains from falling out (that is what one of them told her once.)

IM not going to argue generalities over exacting facts... ... its what kids do ...I find that children in forums will take a comment and hope to find some fault with it.. then go to the internet to find just how off the facts are from the comment... Most children and those of very low self esteem, will quote facts from an internet search in exacting parameters as if they knew it all by them self.... your type stick out like a sore thumb to those of us who are well educated...
MY point was for the non roofer, walking down the street on a 90+ day with the hood up, hands in pockets and sun glasses, will get my attention every time just like all the cops in my community with give them.

I must be blind then....

Naw..... I too have seen what you're talking about.... in areas that don't get as hot.

Please.

When you start calling people names it only highlights that you don't know what your talking about. Its obvious you made up your '800 degree" comment.

You're referencing your experience in a different part of the country that doesnt apply when you're trying to correct me.

I worked with Sunmeadow Homes at 2184 McCulloch Blvd N # C, Lake Havasu City, AZ 86403 I lived there full time for 9 years.

I believe the highest recorded temp there was 126 or 128.

Grow up and eat your crow.

Agree 100 percent.

If I dress like a Eskimo on a Texas July day, something is wrong.

I was not trying to controversial, or stick my finger in anyone's eye... But for some kid to pretend to be a know it all about roofing tar temperatures, only goes to point out that this guy is a legend in his own mind and trying to do so at my expense...
Now back to the issue.. when something looks out of place, a smart man would not look the other way. I've spent 50 years being aware of ambushes, trip wires, or guys in long sleeve hoodies on an extremely hot day

All this over a story about a guy coming into a pawn shop in a hoodie and refusing to take it down when asked.

I've done a fair bit of roofing myself, but that example became meaningless at the point in the pawn shop story where the guy didn't take down his hoodie when asked.

The OP of this thread pointed out, that on a hot July day in Texas, it seemed very out of place to see a guy with a long sleeved hoodie and sunglasses. The Owner felt it to be of some concern... many people here took it to another place.. WE are all suppose to be aware of our surroundings... those who posted it was some how a natural and normal thing, because they have a closet full of hoodies, or that roofers wear hoodies, or a hoodie is a garment to be normally seen on a hot summer day.. and then offered some sad and pathetic reasoning...
I may have been born at night, but it wasn't " Last " night... to all those who want to bury your head in the sand... and don't have a clue about the signs of potential trouble, I hope you learn quickly before some guy in a hoodie puts a gun in your face and robs you or worse....then assaults your wife.. and when the cops ask you to describe him, I hope you will be happy to say he was wearing a hoodie with the hood up and wore sunglasses so I don't know what the person looked like... because I could see no distinguishing characteristics..
Then I hope you feel the ridicule, when the cops says " didnt you think it strange to see a man come up to your completely covered from head to toe, with a hoodie on a hot 90+degree day... you should really seek some awareness of your surrounding training..

The point to this thread was to make people aware of their surroundings, but it wound up being all about people who have no clue about the first line of personal defense, and that is; awareness of your surroundings...

Evil

Rather than try correcting someone about something you don't know about and call them names, you should read their whole post.

Go back to my unedited post #63 and read the last few sentences.

You'll see that I actually agree with you about situational awareness.

Here... since you like calling me a kid.. a child... insecure low self esteem etc... which is really ironic since youre the one thats name calling... I'll help you out and repost it.

If looks like a duck it could be a duck. If it looks like a duck AND acts like a duck AND sounds lie a duck.... its probably a duck

Don't judge a man by his hoodie. Judge him by his actions. Evaluate the whole scenario in its entirety.

As someone that I presume may have fought in Vietnam and was pre poorly judged... or may know someone that was, I would have thought you would understand.

Someone your age should know not to get so butt hurt that quickly.
