I just purchased a new M&P 9. I knew the trigger was going to be heavy because of the Massachusetts compliance rules but this is ridiculous. I shot 30 rounds so far. After doing some research I am told it will lighten up over time. I don't know for sure but it feels twice as heavy as some of my other pistols. Any thoughts on what I should do? Put a few hundred rounds threw it and reevaluate or do a trigger job? Is dry firing the gun with a snap cap the same as firing live ammo to break in the trigger? Thanks all.

I guess they sell a different m&p9 here in Georgia,I just bought one and the trigger is smooth and perfect in my opinion.I will not change any parts on mine!

I sent it to Business end customs for the carry trigger job. Only took a couple days and the improvement was noticable.

Its not bad. If you can do a detail strip on the gun and reassemble then you can install their trigger kit. It requires no fitting or anything - just swap the parts. The only part that is a little annoying is installing the updated striker block. S&W for some reason I can't fathom put it under the rear sight, so you need to drift off the rear sight to put in the new block. There's a spring and cap under pressure there so I'd place it in a ziploc bag while you drift off the sight.
Apex puts some good Youtube videos out that will walk you through the whole process. Depending on which kit you pick it'll really lighten it up. I went with the Competition Action enhancement kit and my trigger pull is down near 3 lbs.

You said you purchased it recently. Do you know when it was manufactured? Maybe S&W finally fixed this problem on the M&Ps. It's been said that they were going to make their M&P triggers more like the Shield which has a palpable and audible reset. Does yours have a reset like the Shield? It would be great to know if Smith finally fixed this!

My m&p was test fired in march 2012 at the factory. I haven't seen a shield so I don't know how the trigger compares.I grew up on revolvers and 1911's.My m&p trigger is better than all d/a revolver triggers I have tried and not as good as most 1911 triggers. I have owned glocks and I think the trigger on the m&p is equally adequate.

I've had my M&P 45 done by Lou at BEC and it was best $70 I ever spent. Factory trigger was stiff and felt like it had a hand full of sand it it. Now 5lbs and very little take up. Took 2 maybe 3 days for him to do the job. You might want to try Greg Derr he works on many brands of pistols and revolvers,have had him do a couple of Ruger revolvers for me and am quite pleased with his work.

I like the M&P a lot, but the trigger is really far less refined than it could/should be.
I hate that Rugers have better triggers.
APEX will help, so will shooting/dry firing a lot.

There are a number of decent gunsmiths in Mass including Dave Santurrie in North Attleboro, Greg Durr in Weymouth, Larocca Gunsmith in Worcester, or Business End customs as already posted.
Smith makes some of the worst Mass triggers, though. I don't believe I would ever buy another S&W pistol again.

I have a M&P 9C with the APEX trigger, and let me tell you - it is a dream. I've posted this in other threads, but here you go. I got the following parts:
DC/AEK spring kit, mainly to set the spring to a decent weight for carry. Probably lighter than your compliant trigger, not sure if there's a law against it where you are.
RAM (reset assist module), to make the reset more distinct.
Machined Sear and Striker Block, to make the trigger pull smooth instead of gritty.
AEK Trigger, because the hinged safety sucks.
To install the AEK trigger you might need to do some modification to the transfer bar (it's pretty simple though, just using a flathead to expand the loop), and most of these parts will require you to be able to punch pins out and back in. That's the extent of it. Most people can DIY with this kit, there's even youtube videos by APEX that show you how to do them.
Personally, I tend to miss pins, which resulted in me needing a gunsmith, but I'm pretty sure 90% of the population that is mentally competent to handle firearms should be capable of doing the kit themselves.

Another recommendation for the APEX DCAEK and RAM, assuming no issues with MA laws. My M&P9 full sized was ok out of the box, but the apex parts make it a fantastic trigger. Easy to do. Apex has YouTube vids and all you'll need is a couple drift punches. I'd make a couple of alignment marks on your rear sight and slight so you can put the rear sight back where it belongs when you're done. It's a 20min job or less. Believe me if I can do it anyone can!

My M&P 40 went to Burwell and he did a good job on it, way better than stock.. lighter and not crunchy. This was before the APEX kits existed. I did a duty carry kit in my M&P45 and am also happy with it. I actually like the APEX's 45's trigger better than the Burwell 40... it is less spongy.
