Responsible gun owners have safes, strongboxes and other secure storage. Oftentimes it is located in another part of your home from where you spend most of your time.
What happens if you hear the door to your home being attacked, an upstairs window being stove in, where is your gun(s) and how soon can you lay hands on it? Are you separated from your home defense capability?

I keep my XD-40, with a loaded 12 round magazine, on my nightstand within arms reach. There is another loaded magazine laying next to the gun.:D Mossy 500 12 gauge is about 3 feet from the bed, my bedroom is covered.:D

In my pocket, where it always is.

And a hundred pounds of Fila Brasileiro under the chair I'm sitting in, she will likely get there first...

I keep one on my nightstand when I sleep. I keep a rifle by my bed.

The rifle that I keep out is only put in a safe when I cannot bring it with me. My handgun goes with me.

Since I have no children and no close neighbors, and my wife is very proficient with firearms, I see no reason to keep them locked up when I am at home.

Since I live in the woods, I take my AR out ever single time that I take my little pups out to "do their business." Can't be too careful of the coyotes and bobcats around here.

I sincerly hope that you are not suggesting that I am irresponsible.

You really should remember that not EVERYONE lives the same life and what is required for your responsibility perhaps is not required for mine.

Since my wife and I are trying to have a child, I will logically alter some of my routines when it is merited. I'll do this because my criteria of responsiblity will change.

I have a 638 in my pocket right now and a 5" 625 loaded with Gold dots on the nightstand. Not to to mention the Mossy 500 persuader loaded with (5) #4 buckshot and a speed feed stock loaded with (2) 000 buck on the fast side and (2) slugs on the other side that lies just under my side of the bed. No, I don't have a round chambered in the 500. That's why I have a pump, so i don't have to fire it.

No, I don't have any children.

Any other questions?

Moss500 8-shot in its bag, partially unzipped so I can quickly pull it out, and a five-pack of 00 buck on the desk in front of it to load it up (I do not store guns loaded--yes, that wastes about six seconds of response time, but safety first...), all about five feet behind me in my room. In case five rounds isnt enough, I have another 80 rounds of mixed 00 buck loads and two packs of #1 buck magnum loads in a shoebox on said desk.

One of mine is within arms reach at all times at a minumum,(except at work, sadly) if one is not actually on my person.

Where it is is not the issue. The question should be what is the longest amount of time it will take to get your gun from your farthest away responce position.

For me if I was at the end of the drive way at the mail box I can walk and get it in less than 1 minute. so If I was in the house its going to be a whole lot faster.

I have always liked these kind of questions, the way some folks talk you might conclude they duck tape a gun to their side:what: while they take a shower lol!:neener::D

When it comes to my firearms? They're across the pacific ocean from me, and a good ways inland. :uhoh:

But I have a SOG Tigershark next to the keyboard. Best I can do in Taiwan.

IMG_1160-1.gif Everyone should make their own decisions about where to store their guns. Tha's part of adult responsibility, my point was to point out the risk that some take not having access to them rapidly. I actually know folks with great firearms, competent pistoleros who have no tactical sense and store their guns across the house or in a cellar safe. Guns are safe allright, homeowners, not so much.

and Charlie from Crystal River..I'm right there with ya. I like the .45 staring at me while I type on this interweb :) and the shottie is leaning against the closet door..and the dobermans (two) are sleeping in the hall. I sleep pretty good round here.

This post has the faint echoes of an anti troll, but I'll play along. Might be a serious question.

Why should I have my guns locked in secure storage if I am home?

Secure storage is for when I am not personally able to oversee my firearms.

The most secure place I can think of having a firearm is within reach and within eyesight.

My XD9 and Ruger SP101 are both loaded, and have reloads around the apartment, but the guns are locked in a strongbox. I also have a 870 with five rounds of #4 buck in the tube with four rounds of OO buck in the sidesaddle. It's locked in a rack in the closet.

I also have a Tomahawk (axe not cruise missile :D) next to the bed, that suppliments the XD9 which comes out at night.

the problem with this line of questioning on this board is that some folks are so pro-gun-self defense that say a guy that only owns a gun for say trap shooting will get blasted to no end(as has been demonstrated in similar threads) because he has no sd gun and keeps his only gun locked up so tight it would take 30 minutes to get to it. And others would twist it to mean this poor person is an anti. We should all just ececpt the fact that not all gun owners are sd oriented and not all sd folks are hunters ect ect. There are many levels of pro gun and pro sd.

Either way some folks choose to lock up their guns for various reasons, like children in the house would be likely the most used reason. Others might for what ever reason think they will never be the target of criminals. For me I lock them up because I can not bring them to work even if just left in my car as I work on a military instalation. If I am home and I am not wearing my pistol then it is locked up.....Just the way it is, as for the others they have little sd value so they stay locked up.

Yeah the internet is a tough medium to make a point without getting some folks panties all in a knot. It's tough to be understood exactly because of the lack of expression, but be that as it may, I think it's a good practice to keep whatever firearm you have nearby and ready to bring to bear in an emergency.

Sorry, but you need to get in line and wait your turn to tell everyone else how to behave responsibly. No fair cutting ahead.

According to the list I saw a while ago, Jeremy Pffister gets to tell everyone else what to do throughout the month of May 2008. I don't remember even seeing your name on that list.

Of course if you're really Carolyn McCarthy, Sarah Brady, Michael Bloomberg, or one of the other registered tyrants you can set the rules any time you want. That's only fair.

I have my glock in my nightstand drawer, my mossberg behind my tv in my bedroom, my .357 in my bathroom cabinet and my ak in a dresser drawer... my .22 is in a case as it's not really for home defense. I have no kids in the house so I don't have to worry about little fingers finding my friends ;)
