That's the key words. ;)

Intruders kicking doors in, based on my limited experience in the Army and living in metropolitan cities with gang banger home invasions, usually is done by those who are armed with intent to overwhelm dwelling occupants (They anticipate occupants to be armed with pistols) by element of surprise and speed ... if he/she/they are armed and shooting starts, for me, best countered by high volume/speed return fire that is easier to control.

I have done fast defensive point shooting drills on multiple targets and prefer 9mm PCC over .223/.300 BLK with cheaper practice (AR with 22LR CMMG conversion bolts even cheaper but using same trigger).

And depending on magazine capacity, those 3 extra 9mm rounds may come in handy over 30 round magazines. ;)

Difference between pistol vs PCC velocities (Similar to 9mm vs 9mm Major) demonstrated in following video (And mushroomed JHP will do more damage)

/p

And always train to anticipate MULTIPLE intruders (Front and Back/kitchen/patio door entry also ;)) like this - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/getting-long-on-the-gun.918870/#post-12622047

We seem to do some variation of this thread every month or so, but clearly, we all like to post our personal preferences, if four pages in a thread just started today is any indication.

No option to choose 5.56 mm? 'Cause that's how I roll with my home defense carbine, 62 grainers to be precise. There's a cruiser-ready Mossberg 590A1 (12 gauge, of course) with a WML as well, in addition to a SIG P-226 Legion w/Surefire X-300 Ultra mounted and 21 rounds of Gold Dot 124-grain +P JHPs onboard.

I don't move around much at home but if I do the gun moves with me. I'm pretty sure my attack cat will buy me time to grab my gun
The cat looks cool, but not sure we can un-see those legs... I traded in my attack cat myself, for two German Shepherds and a territorial lab-Rottweiler mix.

For close quarters work (and home protection qualifies...) my first choice will always be a basic 12ga riot gun - simple bead sight, 18 to 20" barrel, four shot tube - loaded with standard 00buck nine pellet round in 2 3/4". My current one is a Remington 870 with a sling and a butt cuff with five extra rounds, some of those with Flite Control...

It's kept close by - but not visible to anyone visiting... I pray it's never needed- and that I never again have to use one....

After watching/reading this thread the past day I made a change.
9mm and 41 mag!!!!
We just need to get the 41mag a little love!
I have used my 41 as a night stand gun when vacationing in hiking areas that the 41mag is a good choice!

9mm with night sights is still the primary at night in bed. My pocket carry is my primary when up and about

I have #8 birdshot as my current HD round. I had buckshot but recently switched. I have a small house and I figure I'll always be in within 15 feet of any bad guy. I don't want pellets flying through walls at my wife or kid.

99% of my waking, out of bed time it'll be a 1911 .45. Bathrobe pocket carries a p365. 12ga in easy reach.

Layered/hardened exterior. Kicking my door in? Unless you're driving a tank, good luck.

And mind the cat. Sneaky, vicious, fang and claw filled furry bag of pure mean. The last unannounced visitor was a pair of LDS doing the good work. I'm still paying the hospital bills.

The cat is still licking chops and looking far too pleased with himself. Pure meaness.
Ha ha ha ha. Both my doors are the ones with the glass pains someone could bust then reach in and unlock the door. That is where it not for the front being double pained and the back being plexy glass. I'd love to watch some idiot hit his own self in the head when his hammer bounces off.

Right this minute? It depends on where I am at.
Same here. I live alone and I am never more than a few feet away from a loaded gun. They are all hidden from sight but easily accessible. They are various calibers from 9mm to 38 SPL to 45 Colt to a nice little Colt police positive in 32-20. Next to my bed is a riot shotgun (12 gauge) loaded with #4 buckshot.

All of my friends know that every gun in my home is loaded and they are all gun people anyway. With my best guns locked away and the rest hidden, I have an old glass front gun case in the living room...full of my least valuable junk guns. Those are "bait" guns, for any burglar able to get past my home security systems.

Oh and I forgot what I just went over was the set up for upstairs. When I'm downstairs in the workshop there a shotgun hung up on the floor joist above the lighting above me desk. Idea being If I hear something upstairs or someone comes through the garage door I need only stand up and reach above my head. In theory I could appear to be putting my hands up in surrender but actually be grabbing my 12

Right now, sitting in my home office, if I hear a broken window my CCW is my quickest available firearm and is loaded with 357 mag. But my nightstand gun is a 9mm. I guess there's also a chance I'm sitting in the living room, at which point I'd reach for the Model 66 loaded with 38 special. Inside my gun safe I also have mags loaded with 45acp and .223.

I'm not really particular on what round I use to defend my self/family.

If my back door was kicked in, the first thing seen would be a wall displaying some of my targets I’m most proud of… my ccw qualification, the levels 1&2 tactical training targets. The 10 shots in 1” I did at 20 yards, and a paper plate I shot a 2” group in at 30 yards with a micro compact( that was luck! Doubt I could repeat it consistently) If that doesn’t make someone think twice, the 365 loaded with Hornady critical defense is on the nightstand. The 12 gauge with 71/2 backed by a turkey magnum is next. If it goes further, the full size 9 with Hornadys Critical Duty is on/in its place at the bookcase… otherwise, there are strategically placed skillets and kitchen knife racks… that’s right now… the plan keeps evolving…

My home defense/EDC is currently an XD45 compact (10+1). I'm transitioning to a an M&P9 CORE (17+1) with a green dot sight.

Backup is a silenced SBR in .223/5.56.

#4 buckshot works. And bird shot is well for birds. If anything get some heavy turkey loads. Bismuth or tungsten.

Yes, maybe I'll get some #4 buckshot. I'm still new to guns. I've heard conflicting things about birdshot, but everything that I've seen on youtube tells me that a load of birdshot to the body from across a room will penetrate pretty deep and ruin a guy's day.

I wouldn’t bet my life or my family’s life on it. But that’s just my opinion. #4 buck is all I use.

On the nightstand, .45 ACP -- Glock 21 with green laser.

In the closet about two steps away, 20-gauge -- Mossberg SA-20 with a mounted light.

If that's not enough, oh well ... Not to tempt fate or anything, but I'm not too worried. Things are pretty quiet where I live. And yes, I'm getting my routine physicals. ;)
