If you were at home right now and you heard a window break or a door being kicked in what would you pickup to defend yourself and your family? I am not asking your favorite home protection round I am asking what you would grab if you heard a strange sound right this second?

Why?

I would also be interested in the model of the actual weapon you would grab? And if a rifle round, is it in a long gun (16" or longer) or a short barrel < 16"?

I keep a XD mod 2 compact in 45acp next to my bed and it is what I would grab if something alerted me.

I chose the XD mod 2 in 45 acp because it is a small size making it quite maneuverable but still holds 14 rounds that make big holes.

I have rifles and a shotgun available further away but they are not what I would grab first.

M&P FS 40S&W is my nightstand gun. Wife and I both shoot it well. 15+1, 2 spare mags laying beside it, it is the highest power and capacity pistol in the house.

Glock 17. "Pants on + Glocks on." :)

Theres usually an AR available close by too.

No hurry though, nothing is getting close to the house, let alone in without a fight, we have perimeter alarms and a roving, well motivated security team (three Rotties) that goes off if a gnat farts, so Id probably just top off my coffee and get some dog bones for the aftermath. :)

My nightstand gun is a Smith M&P 45 with a 14-round magazine and an attached light There is a short barreled 870 and a 16" AR carbine close by. But INSIDE the house I prefer a handgun. Any long gun can be a little cumbersome and there is no place inside my home for a shot over 5 yards. Most likely closer to 2-3 yards. I prefer something I can use with one hand and keep the other free at that range. If the conflict spreads outside my home that is what the long guns are for.

Why that pistol? I don't believe for a second that 45 is any better than the best 9mm loads. In fact, for carry outside the home 9mm is my choice. But I have the gun, I like it and it is very accurate. It is a big heavy pistol and even with the standard 10 round mags is bigger than I want to carry. I have 17 round 9mm pistols that are more compact, 10 round 9mm pistols that are a lot more compact. But with 14+1 capacity I'm not giving up much and I like the gun too much for it to not serve a SD role for me.

My Kimber R7 Mako has been on the night stand lately. It is loaded with 135gr Critical Duty. I have been carrying my 442 loaded with 158gr Norma.
I live in an apartment complex as we decide what the future holds...
I don't want anything with to much penetration that could go into the apartment across the hall.

A .38 Special by my computer a .38 Special and a 12 gauge Mossberg 500 by my bed. Also when I'm up and dressed a .38 special on me. I live out in the sticks if you've got a problem you'd best have the means to take care of it. If you rely only on a call to the sheriff's dept. they might get somebody out here in 30-45 minutes.

Right this minute? It depends on where I am at.

I have a Glock 23 on the night stand loaded with Remington Golden Sabers. Also a Glock 19 stuffed down in the side of my recliner loaded with Hornady JHP's.

Why? Clocks are known for being dependable and for requiring little maintenance. ( mine get maintenance anyway)

JHP's because I want a fast acting bullet that I don't want to exit the house.

If the threat is outside the house either of these will get me to my AR.

Dont typically have loose cartridges laying around.. My days of tossing a fastball are decades back so I am not sure I could defend much with one.

The only firearm I currently keep out at the house - which makes it both my bedside gun and my HD gun is a M1300 Winchester 12 gauge.
Easy to manipulate and get into action, and no one can mistake the chambering of a shotgun. Loaded with #8 shot.

One of the same guns I carry. I like three inch barrel .45 ACP 230 Grain XTP., Yes I am fine with my own hand loads. Whatever my carry gun is at the time is my Go To gun while in my home.

A 9mm - because "right this second" I'm wearing my Glock G19. We're almost ready to head out the door for church, and while my wife is putting on a few last-minute touches, I thought I'd drop by and see what's going on at THR. :D
