What is your CURRENT home protection round

I’m wearing the 10mm (another “pants on = Glock on” person) but the CZ2008 is in arm’s reach too. We’re far enough from neighbors that over penetration isn’t really a concern, and given options, I prefer to start with the rifle and 30 rounds.

7 rounds of 38 Special is what the S&W 686 holds. Handloaded 38 Special +P loads with a 158 gr. hard cast SWC. If that gun ever had to be fired indoors a 357 Magnum load would be worse on the ears than the 38 Special which would be bad enough. A hot 38 Spl. load should do what needs doing. 9mm Glock 19 usually has a loaded mag. in it with an empty chamber and would just need the slide racked to be ready.

pitbull/rottie mix 125 lbs is the home/car alarm followed by the reloaded 12 gauge flechette rounds which won't go into the neighbors house from inside my house.

I could get to my 9-mm faster, so that'd be what I'd grab in the scenario described. If I had 12-15 seconds to spare (because it'd take that much longer to get to), I'd MUCH rather have the short-barreled Auto 5 in hand.

I don’t have just one or two. Most all of my handgun rounds would only be used long enough to get to something better though.

Let's see, I spend most of my time in three places in the house, the bedroom, my home "office" and my garage. Not necessarily in that order. The bedroom nightstand gun is my CZ82 in 9X18, the garage is my SAR9 and my "office" I have a current choice of my KS7, my Chinese M37 clone, M&P 15-22, 5 different 1911s, Kel-Tec P17, Zastava M57, Polish P64 or my G2C. This does not include those firearms that are stored away. These are my current choices as I slowly work on deciding where to put a securable gun storage cabinet and make room for it.

If you were at home right now and you heard a window break or a door being kicked in what would you pickup to defend yourself and your family? I am not asking your favorite home protection round I am asking what you would grab if you heard a strange sound right this second?
9mm Speer Gold Dot/Winchester Ranger T pushed to .357 Mag velocities out of PCC.

Because pending Duncan v Bonta, possession of larger than 10 round capacity magazine is legal in CA and 17/33 round magazine is better than 10/15 round magazine.

And we should be hearing from judge Benitez soon ... Maybe he's waiting for 4th of July? :D https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...-aw-magazine-ban.905531/page-12#post-12546529

What would you grab if somebody kicked in your door and your XD was on the other side of the house from you?

I live in a two story house with a great room and master bedroom upstairs. I work from home and my office is in my bedroom. Between my teenage daughter and all of her teenage friends I don't feel comfortable scattering guns throughout the house even though I have plenty to do so. In my situation I feel scattering guns throughout the house would have a much higher probability of an accident than a solution.

I usually carry a pocket pistol with me when I go out to the shop instead of keeping a half dozen guns stashed out there so that there would always be one in easy reach. When I take out the garbage I usually slip the XD mod 2 into a jacket pocket if it is cold outside or a smaller gun if it is warm and I am not wearing a jacket. I worry much more about an onery buck whitetail during the rut than a human in my neighborhood. I have had run ins with bucks but never a human.

Honestly my first line of defense is Piper, my German Shepherd, that is always at my side. She would undoubtedly buy me a few seconds to grab a gun. My daughter's friends love her and are in no danger of getting hurt while she is around.

Right this minute in the kitchen, I have my NAA Mini .22 Mag 1 5/8" in my jeans pocket (CCI 40 gr FMJ) with the quickest functional long-gun being my early Universal M1 Carbine with a 15 round mag of FMJ (maybe Aguila?- I would have to check). Overnight, the 870 with Federal 000 and the 629 with WWB 240 gr JSP are also made ready- a unhappy bear coming in one of our at-grade bedroom windows at our mountain home is far more likely than a raid by the mythical ex-Spetsnaz team many forum members seem to believe lurks around every corner.

That's the key words. ;)

Intruders kicking doors in, based on my limited experience in the Army and living in metropolitan cities with gang banger home invasions, usually is done by those who are armed with intent to overwhelm dwelling occupants (They anticipate occupants to be armed with pistols) by element of surprise and speed ... if he/she/they are armed and shooting starts, for me, best countered by high volume/speed return fire that is easier to control.

I have done fast defensive point shooting drills on multiple targets and prefer 9mm PCC over .223/.300 BLK with cheaper practice (AR with 22LR CMMG conversion bolts even cheaper but using same trigger).

And depending on magazine capacity, those 3 extra 9mm rounds may come in handy over 30 round magazines. ;)

Difference between pistol vs PCC velocities (Similar to 9mm vs 9mm Major) demonstrated in following video (And mushroomed JHP will do more damage)

/p

And always train to anticipate MULTIPLE intruders (Front and Back/kitchen/patio door entry also ;)) like this - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/getting-long-on-the-gun.918870/#post-12622047

The "BEST" home defense weapon threads have been done to death... I was really interested in what the reality of what people would grab at this moment in a home defense situation. "Breaking down the door" was meant to convey no time to think, you just have to react as opposed to a strange car pulling into the driveway.

Bear, mouse, ATF, ex-Spetszan team (what ever that is?), junkie, Narco gang, your mistresses pissed off husband... what ever gets you to react instead of think. ;) P.S. I am more likely to have my P32 in my pocket than my NAA 22wmr 1 5/8" but still like my NAA. I appreciate knowing the circumstances behind the rimfire vote and the real life truth of what would be grabbed. :)

I find it interesting the break down between handgun, rifle and shotgun although a rifle round might be coming from a long barrel or a short barrel rifle caliber "pistol".
